Some considerations: power consumption for a fully fledged computer is not sustainable, a router/firewall needs to be up 24/7/365. Alternatively, one can look for s small factor PC or a thin client, like HP T620 Plus, under 15W running More, most motherboards have integrated Realtek NIC which are known to have driver issues under BSD stack. A second hand quad Intel NIC is a world of difference when it comes to speed, stability and features. Nevertheless, good to see more people promote pfSense and open source software for routers and firewalls.

Thanks for this tutorial, It was actually as straight forward as I thought, but The reason I searched for these videos was because I was looking to see if Pfsense could run on the same pc and still be used as a PC, but it looks like this takes up the entire PC for routing. Thats okay, but it means I need to go look for an old PC to use for PfSense.

Hello Torogi I loved this tutorial and the way you presented things but one of my main request here would be know if you can make a video or 2 (or even more) focusing onhow to deploy a captive portale on PfSense. Captive portals actually is an additional security level for people like me who have high speed internet at home (for work purposes) but would love manually allow peoples in or take them out, also build profile that I can shape easily allowing this and disallowing that because each person have different needs. Will be pleased if such serie could be recorded and published.

A wifi card is weak. You go from lan to switch to strong access point. You also get more LAN ports this way.

Same issue here. Update: user install error haha, I switch PCIe ports (I had it on the bottom one for whatever reason) moved it to the top and turned on my PC (I switched it with the PC unplugged for 10 mins obviously) and PF Sense was able to detect it no issues, this tutorial is absolutely amazing!

Hi. You did a video a few months ago on Multi wan configuration. I would like to know if this could be done using a VPN as a gateway. I have several streaming devices on my network and it would be easier to switch between networks on those devices when I want to be on the VPN. My end goal would be to have my PFsense router go out to an Access point with 2 ssids. 1 ssid for regular traffic and the other ssid for vpn. I have looked everywhere and the only videos I have seen is to use policy based routes on the client to bypass the vpn and that doesn't work for me. there has to be a way to do this by forcing any clients to a network to go through the vpn network.
