You are a genius brother, you explain it so well. I have tried to follow this setup but without the switch. I have 3 main devices 1. ISP Model 2. 4 x 2.5 Port fanless pc (pfsense) 3. TP Link archer router as access point but internet not working when connected to the WiFI, if connected to the ethernet it works. Please make a video on this without the router.

Very good topic to educate all of us about. I plan to do a PfSense router in my house. The Xfinity one is $14.99/month, and it's quite limiting. I sure hope I can learn lots from you & others.

Yes! It is awesome that i found this! Im a student who is looking to try out some stuff for practice and learning purposes. I have created my plan, and seeing this video really helped me visualize and confirm what i need to do! Instead of using a switch and AP i plan on buying a router (tplink ax6000) and using that in AP mode - For several reasons: 1. Its less to manage. 2. Its less to buy. 3. Its a good router with a lot of functionality and range too.

I mean if i disabled the wifi, can i use like this way? or modem must support bridge mode? Right now I'm using ISP modem with closed dhcp and dhcp is on the synology device. Hi ! We bought the Netgate 1100, do i really need to install the pfsense ? or is it some standard firewall inside the netgate hardware that will run by itself without software ?

I am not sure, but if it comes with PFSense already installed, just check the version. If it's 2.7.2 your good, if not you can always upgrade. Hope this helps! :) And thanks for watching!

Perfectly timed video! Was just looking at buying a used pc for this purpose lol. I just thought of an idea to help you with your new journey on yt. You could create some custom windows ISO’s with some scripts to debloat windows to help you with the annoying pop ups on a fresh install. Even some scripts which you could just copy paste across from your host machine would do tbh :) I know you’re an IT man that loves to tweak things lmao 🤣 (could be wrong here lol)

Would you need a password for your ISP modem to switch it to bridge-mode or modem-mode ? How would one know what mode it is in and why is it important that it is on one of those modes, versus what other modes it might be in ?
@DigitalMirrorComputing10 ай бұрын
Well it will all depend on your ISP. I guess for most ISP's all you really need is to go to the ISP router admin page (which you can find by accessing your default gateway). You will need a user and password but you can request that from your ISP. Some routers also come with that info in the back or side. If your router is working on it's own, without any other additional device and your wifi is also working it is in router mode most likely. But once you access your isp router admin page, just go through the menus to check if you have that option. Hope this helps! :)

@@DigitalMirrorComputingThat was a very detailed reply, thank you very much. I used to be able to log in, but then they replaced my modem and I never tried after that. I only use it as a modem, I got my own router with WiFi after it. Thank you for the info. Will have to try it again once the family is out. LoL Never change router settings when wifes and teenagers are using the internet. 🙂

Great video friend. I have an old NETGEAR router with an extender at the back of the house. Would love to improve our network with what you showed in this video, I’m not hugely technically minded but found this fairly easy to follow which I like. My question is, is there a way to enable a wireless signal for mobiles/tablets etc as we have already and to extend the signal to the back of the house? What product would be recommended to use with PFSense/fanless pc?

Hi Bro, I need your help. I have Ubuntu 18.04 on my laptop and it has a VPN settings configured on it. I think its managed through pfsense I use this VPN to connect to my work environment Now my query is that when I connect to this VPN I connect to my work network & am able to work inside it, but this disconnects the internet connectivity that is working on my base machine. I want the internet to be working on my base system as well & also should be able to connect to my work network as a lot of websites are blocked inside the work network. Split Tunneling is enabled on the VPN server but it seems my system is missing some configuration which is causing it to not work Can you please tell me what settings I need to do on my laptop VPN to make this work. Kindly help. Thanks & regards,

OPNSense is better option, its slightly faster, user interface is more slick. But most important, regular updates. I was a happy Pfsense user, but switched to OPNsense since I have a 2Gb internet connection. I could handle those speeds better than pfsense on the same hardware.(vm)
@DigitalMirrorComputing Жыл бұрын
I use both! Regarding the speed I am not sure I believe that and as for the interface it's totally down to the user! I very much prefer PFSense. I find it a lot simpler to use. BUT, that halt and restart buttons under diagnostics sure is stupid! :D
@arnoldsmit3289 Жыл бұрын
@@DigitalMirrorComputing if you would like, I could post several speedtest results. The jitter is consistently lower OPNSense, 1 or 0ms vs 2 or 3ms pfsense. Also the download speed on average 40 Mbps higher, upload on average 20. Measured in exactly the samen VM on a 2 Gb internet connection.

opensense dose a better job for hardware support but they still wait for netgate the creators of pfsense to commit some code for fixes as opensense laggs behind their both are quite good tho

@@DigitalMirrorComputing You misunderstood me......maybe it was my question. What IS the reason for doing this? What does this do for my internet
@ppal649 күн бұрын
@@davidnee6157 For most home users, the advanced features of pfSense may be more than what’s strictly necessary. A standard ISP router is often sufficient for basic tasks like browsing the web, streaming, and managing multiple devices. However, pfSense offers benefits for users who want more control, security, or customization. Features like custom firewall rules, VPN support, and traffic management might be useful if you prioritize privacy, want to manage internet speed across devices, or need more robust security. Similarly, advanced monitoring and content filtering could appeal to users who want to keep a close eye on their network or restrict access to certain websites. If you're comfortable with the extra setup and maintenance, pfSense can enhance the overall security, performance, and flexibility of your network, but for a basic home setup, it's often overkill. It depends on whether you want a "set-and-forget" solution or prefer more hands-on management.
