Excellent. Both you and dad. This is what I'm used to working on. Vehicles with plugs, points, and condenser. Before installing the distributor cap, I look inside the cap and look at the individual studs which the rotor gives spark to ensure no corrosion build up. It does not look like much if you're not used to seeing it. If you slightly scrape those studs inside the cap, sometimes a thin scale of corrosion will chip off. If that occurs, I use little sand paper to sand down each of those contact points. Now if you're using a brand new distributor cap, then those studs should look brand spanking new. If you're using the old distributor cap, check for hairline cracks before reinstalling or using. Doesn't take much of a crack to file things up. My old Ford used to need some TLC regularly, especially on rainy days. Nicely done Roger & dad.

Thanks! The cap on this one was new a couple years ago and has no hours on it. Someone burnt the points up so instead of getting points from a tractor place, that would have probably been sufficient, I got the good Standard stuff from the auto parts store along with a better rotor. I would have got a new cap but Standard does not make one. Your right a hairline crack will cause problems. Then it has solid core copper wires, which work great. So now the ignition is in good shape minus checking the timing.

Thanks, it is sounding better. My goal with a video like is, is to make it easy enough for anyone to be able to understand and do.

I have not worked on a vehicle with points in ages. Neihoff used to use those same DRxxx numbers back in the day when I worked as a mechanic for a living....I wonder if Standard/Neihoff are related?Anyhow great vid and good to see your assistant.... working during his summer break from school :-). One of my fondest memories is when I was 15 and got my first car an Alfa Romeo that when I bought it had the cylinder head in the trunk.... I was ok doing the rest of the work but the cam alignment was past my pay grade...My dad helped me count the teeth on the timing chain to the double overhead cams, he did a great job and the car ran like a champ.

I don't think I have ever heard of Niehoff. I just looked and it looks like they are the same as BWD now. There must have been some relationship with Standard for them to use the same numbers. I'm actually the "boss" and my dad is the assistant in the video😀

Thanks! Yeah, I think I have seen some that have a small tube of grease. We worked on it some today. It is turning into more of project than we wanted.

Thanks Roger! It's great to see you both on the video! Do you have an advanced timing mechanism under the points? I use to check for free movement when I do the points. I did not changed the condenser in a while. Does it wear over time? Or it just simply quit working? Thanks!
@TractorTech6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joe! Yes, it has an advance. The condenser could cause a misfire. Here is how you can test a condenser. mgaguru.com/mgtech/ignition/ig129.htm
@FromSteelToWood6 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks Roger! I think I underestimated the condenser value. Thanks for the link! I did some more research about it. I understand it does not wear gradually. It runs or it suddenly fails (it shorts). When it is short, then the points get high voltage coming back from the coil, instead of the condenser. So the points will fail soon after that. Not replacing it makes me at risk for an unpredictable failure.
@TractorTech6 жыл бұрын
I've never seen a condenser failure, but there is not much out there with a points ignition today. My Dad may have seen one fail. I'm sure they can fail, not sure how common it is. We usually replace the condenser when the points get changed. Even a lot of people are going to an electronic ignition conversion but that gets costly, because you need to change the coil in a lot of cases and then you can't use solid core wires. If you get a new condenser see if you can get a Standard blue streak or Napa Echlin. These are better than what the aftermarket tractor places sell. They may have a listing for your tractor by application. You may be able to find it by the type of distributor like I did. Lastly keep the old condenser as a spare just in case you would need it in a pinch.

Is that a 145 engine in a MF135? That is a 4 cyl correct?
