Man, I love your videos so much. Just purchased a '67 sunroof and am doing it from the ground up. Man is it getting expensive with all German parts....... I appreciate your videos so much. I am a backyard mechanic and have basic working knowledge of cars but don't get into the down and dirty much. You make me confident in my skills to my own repairs. Thanks so much. Really, thank you.

I tightened the gland nut once with just air wrench. It came loose and tore up the dowel pins in the crankshaft. Every one after that always used torque wrench to 253 ft. lbs. Never had one come loose again....

I need to do this soon. Flywheel seal is leaking more and more and you can smell oil on the clutch from time to time. I am really dreading this but based on what I've seen from you it will just take me time and patience but I can do this.

do you recommend using speedi sleeve to help resolve oil leaking from rear main seal?
@jjv18328 жыл бұрын
Derrin. I recently did a top end refresh on my daughters bug. I also did the rear nain seal. the end play was fine when i pulled the assembled moter out. now i so the end play on the moter without jugs and its terrible. im sure the gland nut is tight, but am confused on how i ended up with more end play.

thanks for this video, kinda an odd question but why does my clutch look different? I have a 1600 dp ? mine has some metal pieces that seem like they teeter totter on the back of the clutch...

I watched other video where a guy say seal should be flush. Is it different in other models?
@foxibuster3 жыл бұрын
lube was used on the main seal and couple of places. Is it just wheel bearing grease or does it have to be a special type?
@ocavant6 жыл бұрын
Quick question. Sealant on the outside of the main seal? Factory manual says nothing about lube or sealant. Thanks.

this may be my problem i installed 3 in about 2 months they leak , one i got it crooked my fault , and other was cut looked like a razor blade cut ,, i never put them all the way in to where they hit the back of the case ? that is what i heard vwdarin say ,,,CORRECT ? SEAL MUST HIT THE BACK ? cause i had watched vids that said even? so maybe the next one will go in all the way .. please correct me if i heard it wrong . thanks as always , the old man thanks you very much.

10:24 every "expert" under the sun told me to install flush. I used up 3 oil seals until I learned what Darrin says here: all the way in with your oil seal!

thats what im going to try now cause last 2 only lasted a month or so

@@martinharris5017 ty for the fast reply I'm going to go back flush all the way seated just worried about oil return
@martinharris50172 жыл бұрын
@@markmorris2336 Only thing to watch out for is that the seal contacts the flywheel flange. If you have any doubts about that OR you still have drips, then last resort, go to a double-lip oil seal, push it all the way in, and you should be rip free and drip free!
@markmorris23362 жыл бұрын

If the spark plugs are installed should the engine turn with ease or should it be hard if it has good compression?
@vwdarrin9 жыл бұрын
ddayer this motor is old and tired, a good motor would be harder to turn over but you could still turn it
@MrGarcon988 жыл бұрын
well i installed another seal , this one i let it hit the back little flange on the casing , can't go any further and took a ride i only saw one little drop of oil , lot better then before , i am told that a cast fly wheel will leak? and a chromoly won't ? maybe thats the little drop . better then a puddle LOL
@BellOfTheBall6396 жыл бұрын
bug Den mine was the same way just did main seal flywheel o ring and new flywheel. Still has a small leak like yours.
@zzzdogutube9 жыл бұрын
What did you start with in shims .030? with .015 end play? and then you added what and got .009? I'm confused. Thanks
@vwdarrin9 жыл бұрын
zzzdogutube we started with 30 and we ended up with 25 that gave us 00.9 Thousands. i was Gusseting on the exact number was when it came in the shop ,Hope this clears it up thanks for watching the videos

@vwdarrin9 жыл бұрын
nitrosport5 i will make you a video there is no seal on the front of the stock type one case however they do make a sand seal and sometimes they can leak i will find a seal in the shop and show you how the seal works and how the stock slinger works

.008 is at the loose end but you should be fine factory recommends 4-7 i set them on the loose side if its a used motor just make sure the flywheel is tight and you should be good
