You can flip the the ring gear in a SSC case. It's not easy, but it can be done.

I have a question. I have a engine that was a 1641. Cam in a 120 . I don't want to break the case apart. Want to increase the h.p. by going to 1600 jugs. The crank is a stock 69mm . I have been looking at rods some the center to center is longer. That's my question, can I get more compression by just changing the lenth of the rods, or is that a really bad idea
@vwdarrin10 күн бұрын
@@genenoud9048 It is not a bad idea. You can use on the rod to move the piston closer to the combustion chamber the tighter you make the quench the more compression you will have. Just make sure to check your piston to have clearance at 15° past top dead center. This is usually where you will have an issue if you get the piston to close. Typically in the Volkswagen world 50,000 is the norm between the top of the piston and the top of the barrel. I have tightened it up to zero before on personal stuff you can get away with 30 and still be pretty safe. On a V-8 you can make it zero or above the deck. But Volkswagen squirm around a little more than a V-8. Hope this helps and doesn’t confuse you lol

Hey ,i am learning alot ,but i have a question..1641, mild port on stock heads, Engle 110 cam , 1.25 rockers. How can you check for valve cleanance and then determine compression short of assembly and then gauge it thru srark plug . Bobby
@robertingram456223 күн бұрын
Thanks ,it took you doing the 3rd piston before i understood about clocking the pistons, and smoking when you start up the engine . Thank you . I did learn alot . First engine build . Bobby

Hi Darrin, I watched you and CT build up that old 40hp motor that doesn't take the case stud orings like mine but it does have the cam bearings. Mine must be older than that one you guys worked on because mine doesn't take cam bearings just the crank journal ones. What year did they start using cam bearings on these. mine was built March of 65.

Hey Darrin, good stuff! I’ve got a leak at the jug where it seats at case, is this a head torque issue? Or improper seal at case? Can I use honda sealant at the base without pulling motor? High temp silicone sealer?

Interestingt to hear you talk about reversing the transaxle drive. I have a VW engine and trans bike that I have gradually refined over the years, with a steel shaft through the diff, driving a sprocket. Just wonder if you have ever felt the need to build a bike of this type ?

I prefer to do the drive gear after. First build i ever did, your videos helped a lot. My second build i did it the other way and i ended up pushing my crank up enough to shift it off the dowl pin. I caught it before adding the case half. But i will stick with doing it after going forward, just one less thing for me to think in advance of. Your videos rock!

Pretty good until the domestic problem walked in and distracted the video. We don't care about the mouse, person down the street, and who's who problems. Just wanted to see your perspective on VW engine building.

I've brought home old cases like that before and often the bottom is rotted out around the oil sump. Best way to store them is upside down.
