Yeah but I wonder what they did before technology 🤔🤣I bet only people who knew what they were doing worked on this stuff. I have to replace my boyfriend's. But i wonder if it makes a difference when the current one is a 3 prong and the one I need to switch it to is a 4 prong.

Either you have a gas stove, or you did not show turning off the correct breaker! A single pole 15 amp breaker is 120 volts. Also, (for those watching this video) the voltage tester used will not work on this receptacle with the cover on. Remove the cover, then test it.

How do you know if your receptacle is bad or your appliance itself is going out? I have a small tester it’s two little wires With a little light. You plug it in in the light lights up or doesn’t light up or blinks. Can I plug that into the 220 stove outlet or will I get a shark? I’m trying to find out if the wiring it’s OK or if there’s a short

I have an old three way outlet. Can I replace with this outlet?
@QuiGonGlenn
@QuiGonGlenn 2 жыл бұрын
Good video. I watched mostly to see how this sort of receptacle was attached to the wall. My complaint about your video is you didn't fix the issue that likely caused the old problem in the first place - poorly attached to the wall, screws going into drywall and not either anchors or stud. When I saw you putting those short screws into the drywall, I shook my head a little. I praise you for teaching good electrical fundamentals. I work as an electrician, and if people follow your safety instructions they will in no danger. Your red wire connection was a little sketch, and I noticed the video was edited there... This is the reality of working with existing old work, sometimes you have to make it work if you don't have the option of replacing the wire. That said, it was a teaching moment you missed. Frustrating as it can be, it is good for people to see that this isn't always as easy as an edited video can make it look. I have to run a new wire from the panel, and to save the client money I will be reusing the old on-wall receptacle they have, unless it is damaged. This video did answer my question - this does not attach to a junction box, so you need something solid to screw into and need to plan where your wire comes through accordingly, or use drywall anchors if a stud is not an option. Thank you for showing me that. Proper fastening of the outlet to the wall is a major part of safety in the long run, so please keep this in mind for future videos!

You shouldn't. If you already had 4 wires coming in, there is no good reason not to use the separate ground. And if your house was built after 1996, it's illegal to put the three prong outlet in.

So if your voltage tester is malfunctioning the way you find out is the 6 feet of dirt sitting above you the next week at your funeral? Why not have people make sure the tester is working first? Also, why do you show a single pole breaker instead of a two pole like the actual oven will use? This video is kinda dangerous don't you think?

It's not hard, but This stuff Will kill you, sooner or later, if you don't know what you're doing. SAFETY ISSUE: 1:20 "The first thing that we wanna do is to turn off the power." ...then turns off the Wrong breaker. You have to turn off the right breaker. If the breakers are labeled, fine; if not, you can still find the breakers. A stove/range breaker will have 2 switches, not one like demonstrated here, and likely "40" on each switch (for an 80-amp range). The switch below the one that was flipped is indeed a dual switch, with two "40" amp breakers, and the labels on the left side confirm which breakers control the "RANGE". Next, 1:33-"...check to make sure there's no electricity" with the voltage detector. Most voltage meters or detectors act the same way if the battery is dead as they do if there's no voltage. Most of us have dead batteries in our voltage meters or detectors because we use them so rarely. If you flip the wrong breaker, then use a voltage detector with dead batteries, at 1:58, you're 1 inch from 240V 80A (instant death). So, FIRST, pay attention to which breaker you're turning off, then CHECK YOUR VOLTAGE SENSOR ON A LIVE OUTLET before trusting your life with it--IF IT DOESN'T SHOW VOLTAGE PRESENT on a known live outlet, REPLACE THE BATTERIES OR REPLACE THE METER BEFORE PROCEEDING. Rule 1: Safety First!

It's 240 volts in houses. 2 120 volt lines shifted 180 degrees out of phase provide the 240 volts. In larger buildings, such as apartments, it's 208 volts because they bring all 3 phases in and they are all shifted by 120 degrees. But only 2 of the 3 phases are used, making it 208 volts.
