Good explanation, one Tip to find the seal plate without guesstimating will be. *Set a level in front of the facia and make sure is plumb. *Measure the distance from the level to the exterior wall *Add 5” for brick because the brick is a veneer and set roughly about 1” from the actual framed wall. For siding add 2”.

In Australia we have been building backyard weatherproof patio's as an extension of the house roof for a very long time. All new houses constructed have the outside entertaining area as part of the house roof during construction so it is intergrated into the house. Those risers that allow you to bolt direct to the roof trusses are available at our local hardware stores and are not expensive at all. I notice in your average Amercian backyard you just walk out the backdoor into open air with no patio structure at all??. We would never do that. We design ours so they have roll done windproof shades in tracks for those cooler days/nights with gas heating if you still wish to be outside. Obviously if you are in a colder climate you would build an "Alfresco" off the back of the house with insulated roof that is fully enclosed with glass windows to keep the cold out to extend your living/entertaining area and make use of the wasted space in your backyard. Of note our backyards are fully enclosed with privacy fencing that is at least 6ft high (also obviously for security reasons as well as for your family privacy) noting many Amercian houses have just a low height wire fence which is unheard of over here.

Most American houses have the privacy fence you're talking about; I only ever seen the chainlink fences for backyards in very old neighborhoods.

I'm sure you could weld to it if you wanted to build a metal pergola, or you could just bolt the structure to the current metal saddle.

What about bearing weight from that beam having studs under it, inside the wall, under the top plate. Taking that weight down to a integral footer?

Exactly. Even if there is a single stud, under the sky lift, the weight of the added structure was not planned by the original builder. That wall was designed to support the ceiling joists & the roof only.

Thanks! Typically the beam will sit directly on the bots. Haven't seen anyone bore holes, but that's not a bad idea!!

I’m looking at building to same type of patio cover but I’m going to put a shingle roof on to match the house. I could see the translucent roof panels would need leaves, sticks, bird droppings, etc. cleaned off from time to time.
