I've done this on a few houses. When you cut those holes you are going to get dirty. You are working right over your head and the sawdust and dirt will fall on you so a dust mask will help. When I did this, I used a drill to start the hole for the jigsaw instead of this method of angling the blade but jigsaw blades are flimsy and may break so use eye protection as well.

Thank you for posting this. I recently replaced our vent covers as they were clogged from being installed during the Carter administration and they had been painted over a few times as well. I think I am going to need to install additional vents and this is just what I needed to see.

Helpful. Glad you mentioned the insulation. I will add an insulation baffle inside over the vent before adding blown in insulation.

This is exactly what the previous owners of our house didn't do and now we have to try to do it after the fact. 😩

I don't this will help with humidity. I'd suspect a compromised vapor barrier somewhere. Do you have a crawlspace? If so, is the vapor barrier on the soul in place properly? Overlapped & taped?
@carolfrome7801

@@maxmanx1294 Thanks. I'm all ears. This house was built in 1976. There may not be vapor barriers at all. No crawl space. We have a full basement. When we first moved in five years ago, we had torrential downpours for days on end, and a portion of one room in the basement flooded, about two inches deep. We put in dehumidifiers and drained them into an existing sump hole. We know the lot probably failed a perc test, because it has a mound septic system. There's a drainage system installed around the interior perimeter of the basement. At one time, a big finished rec room was there, but it must have flooded and stayed that way for awhile behind sheetrock walls. The sheetrock was gone when we moved in, but we had to pull out a lot of moldy, rotting 2x4s. In spite of all that, since that first year, the basement has not flooded again. I looked in the attic. Didn't see any moisture or mold. The gable vents are fine, but no soffit vents and insulation covers the interior of the soffits. We always run the bathroom fan, but it's not vented outside. I'm stumped. But my plants sure do like the humidity!

So . . . I found out this weekend (after living in this house for about 1½ years), while my house has soffit vents "installed," I confirmed *_they didn't cut any holes for any of them!!!_* . . . Absolutely despicable . . . luckily the box vents are legit . . . I'm here to see how easy/difficult it'll be to rectify, and it looks simple enough . . . this attic gets crazy hot in the summer and I'm pretty sure this is why because there's no intake
@SimonSaysDIY

Wow that’s terrible! I can’t imagine someone doing that! Fixing the vents should help cool your house during the summer and help your roofing last longer. poor ventilation can cause damage to roofing over time. Good luck! 👍🏻

I'd suggest that you'd want the vent slits to face away from the house, which is opposite what you recommended. This is so that you can see light coming in when glancing at the soffits from the attic interior, and so you can ensure the ongoing integrity of the wire mesh by inspecting them from the exterior.

They should face toward the house, like he said. This is to minimize water from wind-driven rain from being blown up into the attic, which you definitely don't want.

My house doesn’t have fascia end board or soffits. It’s just rafters with bird block in between. I was wondering if I can add vents onto the bird blocks in between each rafter and it will function the same as the soffit vents? I want to do this because I want to remove my gable vents so I can insulate and drywall the attic. But I still want to make sure it’s vented. Yes, I will add baffles and there is already a ridge vent in place.

How has this been performing? My guess is you found, as many with ridge vents have found, that the convection from soffit to ridge doesn't really kick in until the attic temp is way above ambient temp or it's quite windy. So while this lowers the max attic temp, the performance isn't what the ridge vent hype promises.

love this video:) we did this and found it also increases warm air flow in winter and causes premature melting ;which in turn can affect wood . Also just saying with poor aqi or nieghborhood fires are there vents that can exchange that heat without bringing in poor air? thankyou ~best
@Grizzleback07
@Grizzleback07 Жыл бұрын
You need to check for leaks in your ceiling fixtures and overhead ductwork and seal them with spray foam or something similar. Any premature melting is a sign that heat is escaping from inside your house and heating the attic. Add more insulation if possible. If check your roof with frost in the fall or winter, looks for points of melting on thr shingles. That will tell you where the heat is most prevelant and escaping through your ceiling into your attic.

Great video... I have a feeling my soft events are blocked with insulation but I'm not sure. I replace my attic insulation from fiberglass to blown in and I thought I would see better efficiency this winter but instead I've seen two areas where water is dripping from ceiling light fixtures. Any idea why that's happening? My guess is that I have too much blown in insulation and not enough airflow from the soffit vents.
@SimonSaysDIY
@SimonSaysDIY 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that seem like there is not enough airflow and the humidity is building up in the attic.
@alohajason

you may also need rafter vents so air can flow from soffit vents over the insulation. the insulation may be blocking the airflow

You have to be careful that the soffit vents you installed in the back (which are on a higher level) don't short circuit the lower soffit vents.
