Great video! I just installed 5 pocket doors with the Johnson hardware soft close and soft open hardware. Unfortunately, I was unaware that the soft open hardware needed to be installed prior to installing the drywall. On the first two doors I decided to cut a hole in the drywall only because I was planning to cover the drywall with wainscoting. The other three doors I did not want to cut open the drywall because the walls had just been finished and one wall had been tiled for a shower for my kids Jack and Jill bathroom. I figured, I would at least use the soft close hardware and not bother with the soft open hardware for these remaining doors. However, I loved the soft open so much on the first two doors that I somehow needed to figure this out for the remaining three doors, without cutting through the drywall. What I learned on the first two doors after cutting open the drywall and installing the the arm for the soft open system was that you adjust the arm where you want the door to stop, meaning I measured my arm 4 inches from the back and tightened the screw and this allowed the door not to go fully into the pocket, but to stick out about 2 inches. These pocket doors were for my kids and this allowed them to grab the door handle hardware more easily when closing the door. You can adjust arm to fit your needs if you want to have the door completely in the pocket or not. Since I wanted these next three doors to look and act the same as the first two doors, I decided to cut a spacer block 4 inches long that would fit up in the track, be able to slide, but not fall out. I then put the arm in from the front and loosened the screw just enough that the arm would slide easily. I then pushed the arm which pushed the spacer block in the track all the way back until it hit the back of the pocket door. I then used (6) 12” extensions on my drill and was easily able to tighten the screw of the arm inside of the pocket door while my 7y/o held the flashlight on the screw.😂 Now, I had spoken with and face timed one of the engineers at Johnson hardware prior to attempting. This was extremely easy, I would never cut through the drywall again. If I would have known how easy this was, I never would have cut the drywall on the first two doors. Spacer block and (6) 12” extensions is all you need, plus a flashlight and a 7y/o to hold it.

Trying to install this 1060 as a soft open function ( as you show in the video). Using a 24" wide door. Im looking at the instructions, and they're rather confusing, in the fact that there's multiple directions for soft open and close. Each set of directions is not the same ( as far as distance to put the arm from the rough wall, and distance from edges to mount the door plates. After watching your video, it made it quite clear how it works and how to install. One set of directions says - for 24" doors, actuator will be flush with end of track. So i figured I'd go with that. However, when i get the arm up in the track and slide the end of the arm until its flush with the end of the track, i attempt to tighten it down. Problem I'm having is the screw is very tight in the threads of the top part of the clamp. When i try to tighten it down, the top part of the clamp turns and winds up sideways in the track. The top clamp has a "finger" on it that should hold it in position to the bottom clamp. Ive tried to run the screw in and out a few times to clean up the threads, but doesnt matter. The screw still gets tight, and winds up turning the upper half of the clamp. If i could tighten the screw down, the finger would fit into the bottom clamp and i could tighten it down. If i pre tighten the upper clamp so the finger stays in the notch, than i cant slide it over the track. Plus i noticed the bend in the arm isnt exactly 90°, should it be? Thanks

Awesome video. I just installed two pocket doors in my place and attached the door. The door sliding back and forth on the rail sounds like a freight train going by....did you have the same issues with yours? If so, do you know of any replacement wheels (rubber) or other fixes? Thanks again.

Thanks! No, I didn’t have any issues with my wheels being noisy. If you know the manufacturer, I would probably contact them and see if they can send you some replacement wheels.

Are all pocket door tracks about the same. My builder picked up some reliability pocket door frames I believe from Lowe’s I was wondering if these would work with that frame

Hi there. I don’t think they are interchangeable with that brand. I think for this to work it has to be with Johnson hardware brand track. You might check with the manufacturer to be sure compatibility wise but that’s what I’m thinking.

I have a question - (Great video by the way!) I bought the same 1060 hardware that you did, but it only seems to come with 1 soft close/open bracket. You seem to have 2 installed. I double checked my kits with the 1060 ones on the Home Depot website and they seem to only have one bracket as well. I was also surprised to see that the home depot kit had two of the brackets that screw to the top of the door and my kit, and the one you opened, only show 1. Any thoughts? I had this installed and two years later. the soft open portion or closed however you wanna see it. When it slides into the pocket, doesn’t work. It doesn’t seem to be clicking or working properly to actuate. Is there a way to try to fix it without having to rip into the dry wall? Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi there sorry you had this problem. Yeah if it’s the one back inside the door for the open part, the only way I know to access it to replace it is to cut a hole into the drywall. There was someone that had commented one time that with the door off they were able to use a lot of extensions and get back in there, but it seems almost impossible to me. I don’t know if the manufacturer would help you out with some of the cost of the repair if you mention it to them but it seems like a defective part because mine have been working good as new for five years now.

Nice video--thanks! One question though on the soft open, or left side in your video. You say to tighten the Actuator 2 1/4" from the wall or bracket. Doesn't this need to be 2 1/4" + the Jamb thickness, just like the one on the other side?

Yes I believe you are correct. It’s 2-1/4 after the finished jamb is installed. The front one is easy to adjust after you hangar the door so if it’s not perfect that’s ok. You just test it by closing the door and see when it engages. Thanks

I know I'm exposing my ignorance, but how adaptable is this kit to different door styles? I've got an old door (that was apparently used somewhere in the house I bought 5 years ago, but was left in the basement) and I want to use it for a pocket door in an addition I've added to the house (preserving the old-school charm a little in new construction).

Hey thanks for the comment. I think these only work for the Johnson 1500 series. I’m not sure about others I ges it would depend on the type and width of track that they have on the older ones otherwise it’d probably work fine.

Need clarification, Does the soft-close feature only work with the Johnson 1500 hardware, or will it work with any pocket door frame kit? Also, didn't see an option for a 30" x 80" Door....

I believe this one will only work specifically with the Johnson 1500 hardware. I think they should work with a variety of different sizes. I think mine came for 36 inch door full size but you can cut it down to fit a smaller door. You’d have to double check with the seller to be sure.

Yes that’s the beauty is you can do soft close and open. It doesn’t go on the actual door it goes on the track itself. The time to do the soft open though is before the drywall is installed if it’s a remodel you can cut a hole in the drywall and install the soft open back in there. There’s instructions that come with it for that.

Pull.. Whoosh. Rather than pull.. BAM. What's next, a door you walk up to and it opens itself? Oh wait, we have those and not just in Star Trek. Most grocery stores, for example... On the other hand there are people who walk through doors (without opening them.) I fix those all the time. Seems some people are also confused by sliding pocket doors, they can't figure out you have to slide them, and bang on them to get them open. Or, they allow items to slide in behind them (I really would like to figure out how they do this, if you keep things up off the floor, you won't have a baby's shoe, a sock, a comb, a callus remover tool, a CD, and a bunch of marbles behind the door. THOSE were behind JUST ONE pocket door I replaced the track on.) They're also vulnerable to damage if something gets pushed against them really hard. They're also no good if you have small children operating them, although I suppose a really stupid kid will also smash his fingers in a traditional hinged door upon closing it. I recommend against installing them in new (or remodel) applications and go old-school with hinges!

helps to avoid pinched fingers or banging doors .........i have this kit installed and the FIRST thing my mom did when she was "testing/ looking at it" was bang the entire frame so loud the entire HOUSE ran downstairs to see what was wrong.....the doors glide so easily that if you have kids it's a necessity. This addition stops the door from being "slammed" or hurting someone. An amazing option if you ask me.

Yes, I have done drywall, sheet rock whatever you want to call it. I’m just saying if you want to install this, it’s a lot easier to do it before the drywall is on for the part that goes in the back end of the track.
