Your sound might not work. I can't help that. Find the right drivers for your system. READ THE COMMENTS SECTION. Your question has been answered already.
I will not tell you if your Chromebook is compatible. If you want to know it your Chromebook is compatible, you're going to have to figure out what processor you're working with. Then figure out what architecture it is built on (Braswell, Skylake, etc) and then go here to see if that architecture is compatible. johnlewis.ie/c...
If you want to install Ubuntu on your Chromebook and remove Chrome OS, this tutorial is for you. This is not a dual boot. This will REPLACE ChromeOS with Ubuntu.
#Ubuntu #Chromebook #ChromeOS
THIS WILL DELETE EVERYTHING FROM YOUR CHROMEBOOK.
Instructions were taken from these locations:
www.fascinating...
johnlewis.ie/c...
/=========================================/
What you’ll need:
- Chromebook (I’m using the Acer C720)
- Live Linux USB drive (I’m using Ubuntu 18.04)
/=========================================/
Step 1. Enable Developer mode
Developer mode will wipe your Chromebook back to factory settings so make sure you back up any data not on your Google drive.
With your Chromebook turned off hold down the ESC and Refresh While keeping them held down, press the power button once.
Press Ctrl + D to bypass this screen.
Press Enter at the next screen.
On the next screen press Ctrl + D to bypass this message.
You will see a timer counting down in the top right hand corner of the screen. The Chromebook will reboot and you’ll see the screen with the red exclamation mark.
Developer mode is now enabled, power off the Chromebook.
Step 2. Modify the Chromebooks BIOS
By enabling developer mode, your Chromebook will always display the screen with the red exclamation mark on startup. Let’s now modify the BIOS to allow us to install Linux.
Turn the Chromebook on and press Ctrl + D to bypass the screen with the red exclamation mark.
Your Chromebook is reset to factory settings so you will need to go through the Chrome OS setup again.
Press Ctrl + Alt + T to bring up a terminal window tab.
Type shell and press Enter.
Type this: cd;bash ˂(curl johnlewis.ie/f...)
** You'll have to replace that angle bracket with the one on your keyboard. KZbin won't let me use an actual angle bracket after the "bash"
Choose the option to Modify my Chromebook’s RW_LEGACY slot and follow the on-screen instructions.
Step 3. Enable USB boot
Pressing Ctrl + D at the screen with the red exclamation mark on startup will take you to your Chrome OS install but pressing Ctrl + L will take you to the BIOS screen to boot from your USB drive. Let’s turn on the Ctrl + L functionality next:
Press Ctrl + D at the initial startup screen to load Chrome OS.
Press Ctrl + Alt + F2 at the Chrome OS login screen.
Login using the password chronos
At the terminal prompt, type sudo crossystem dev_boot_usb=1 dev_boot_legacy=1
Power off the Chromebook by typing in sudo poweroff
Now on startup, if you press Ctrl + L, you will get the BIOS screen instead of Chrome OS.
Step 4. Install Linux
At this stage most of the work is done and all that’s left is to install Linux:
Plug in your USB drive into the USB port of your Chromebook.
Plug in your live Linux USB into the other USB port.
Power on the Chromebook and press Ctrl + L to get to the BIOS screen.
Press ESC when prompted and you will see 3 drives: the USB drive, the live Linux USB drive (I am using Ubuntu) and the eMMC (the Chromebooks internal drive). Choose the live Linux USB drive.
Choose the option Try Ubuntu without installing. When Linux loads make sure you can connect to the internet (I am using my trusty USB to Ethernet hub combo for a wired connection).
Click on the Install Ubuntu 18.04 LTS icon and follow the on screen prompts until you get to Installation type.
We want to leave the Chromebook’s internal drive untouched so choose the option to do something else so that we can manually setup the partitions for Ubuntu.
Ignore all the mmc partitions and look for your USB drive, if you’re not sure, look at the size of the drive.
Check your partitions are correct and continue the install.
The rest of the install is a standard install so just follow the on screen prompts.
Once finished, reboot, remove the live Linux USB and press Ctrl + L
You now have Linux installed. Run the software updates to make sure you have the latest firmware, drivers and software.

After restarting my device from installing Ubuntu the chrome OS screen pops up like it should. But I didn’t press anything at all even after the beeping so it auto shuts down and turning it back on it says “Chrome OS is missing or damaged”. I can’t get past the screen with CTRL + L anymore. Do I have to start the install method over again for ignoring the Verification screen?

Hey! I really appreciate this video, it helped me repurpose a chromebook that wasn't receiving chromeOS updates anymore. Fast forward a couple weeks now and I've run into an issue. I installed Ubuntu on the laptop a couple weeks ago, but didn't use it much after that day. I opened it up to use it this evening and ran into an endless boot and shutdown loop. Here's how it works (as best I can tell): 1) I press the power button and the "unverified OS" screen shows up. I press control 'L' to load a disk. 2) I get to the boot screen with the SeaBIOS title and version at the top. I press escape to show disks and select 1, which also happens to be the only available partition. 3) On the same screen, the "Booting from Hard Disk..." message appears at the bottom. 4) After 10 to 15 seconds, the screen goes dark. I wait for a few minutes, and nothing happens. No Ubuntu logo. 5) I try pressing the power button and... return to step one. Is there any fix or is she dead?

Just confirmed this also works with loading Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on an HP Chromebook 14 with working sound. I never managed to get sound working with GalliumOS until now. hallelujah! @@reyarqueza7627 Hi there, I ended up swapping out Ubuntu for Bodhi Linux and it’s been rock solid with VSCode for the last year. Wow this actually worked. I tried it on an old Asus C300 which was no longer supported. I had previously dual booted this onto a usb stick but it wasn't really satisfactory. I would let my daughter use it and within a day she had lost the dual booting. Also if the power ran down you wouldn't be able to use linux without redoing the procedure all over. I was about to throw this computer away but decided to follow your video and it worked 1st time! Miracle! I have actually installed linux mint 19.2 and it appears to work fine. Yep. That happens. Try this method if your Chromebook is compatible: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJXYkKWYi85sY7M I know it describes how to install Windows 10, but you just need to watch through unlocking the BIOS. When it gets to the part about installing Windows 10, just put in your Ubuntu USB stick. You can check your Chromebook's compatibility here: coolstar.org/chromebook/windows-install.html (Again, ignore that it says Windows)

OMG. This is so timely with all the discussion regarding the eventual expiration of support for all Chromebooks after 5-6 years. This provides the option of turning a defunct CB into a Linuxbox, which was the primary reason I got a CB in the first place. (I am done with MS & Apple.) The only remaining question I would have would be: "Is it possible to provide access to Android Apps after the conversion?" If so, how? That would restore most of the previous functionality to the converted CB, since I don't really use strictly Chrome Apps. (It would also be nice to have other Linux distros available, besides only Ubuntu.) Thank you.

The installation process worked like a charm on my N22. Thank you. Only thing I'd add is I had a problem with going into developer mode. The previous owner perhaps (I bought used) or someone had decided to disable devmode. To solve this, I had to open the chromebook up and take out the write-protect screw/sticker, and then after putting it all together again, I had to factory reset my chromebook to get rid of the "you're not allowed to go into developer mode" issue. After doing this, it went into dev mode and the rest worked like a charm. edit: After some more tinkering, came to find that audio simply wouldn't work despite hours of troubleshooting, and the trackpad felt terrible. I put GalliumOS on it instead and it runs beautifully. I actually used your gallium tutorial for that part, so it's not meant as a critique towards you or anything, just for others who might find themselves in a similar situation. On N22 models at least, Ubuntu's kinda iffy, but gallium is great. Thanks again for all the great guides. Cheers!

Thank you David for the excellent tutorial! I have Ubuntu running, but I was wondering if you had a problem with the audio. I can’t get the audio to work for anything. Do you know what may be the problem or how to fix this?
@DBTechYT
@DBTechYT 4 жыл бұрын
Be sure to check that your system is set to use the right audio device. If you're on the right audio device, then it's probably a driver issue. Because there are so many different Chromebooks out there that use different audio hardware, the default drivers might not work and you'll probably have to see about finding drivers in forums if you can't find them when running updates.

I reinstall it leaving the flash drive in my pc during the restart after it installed everything is working fine right now. I was never able to get ubuntu to work but I ended using Manjaro XFCE 19.0.1. Also if you're wondering I used BalenaEtcher to put the iso on my flash drive. Hi David. Wonderful tutorial & super easy to follow. Thanks for uploading the new updated tutorial. I got Chromebook Pixel, 16GB RAM (2015) and I had installed ubuntu last year but I ran into lot of issues so finally today I was going to restore the Chromebook to fresh ChromeOS install (actually did) but found your old tutorial and saw your comment that you just uploaded this video yesterday. All right. So Chromebook Pixel 2015 got Intel Core i7 BROADWELL chipset and I followed option 1 (RW_LEGACY) successfully without bricking anything. Rest everything was super easy to follow. Touchscreen, trackpad , camera, bluetooth, keyboard lights everything works fine, except no sound & keyboard shortcut keys of course don't work. I've updated the ubuntu 18.04 and made sure all the settings are fine. So i tried to see if ubuntu is recognizing the sound card with sudo aplay -l here are the results **** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** Home directory not accessible: Permission denied card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 7: HDMI 1 [HDMI 1] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 8: HDMI 2 [HDMI 2] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 9: HDMI 3 [HDMI 3] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 0: HDMI [HDA Intel HDMI], device 10: HDMI 4 [HDMI 4] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 card 1: bdwrt5677 [bdw-rt5677], device 0: System Playback/Capture (*) [] Subdevices: 0/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 Both speakers and headphone won't work. Hey other than sound this is best thing I've accomplished this whole year, lol. I wasn't using chromebook anymore because of all the issues. thanks again. Liked your video and Subscribed

I am using your directions currently. I am installing Linux Mint Mate edition, but I may switch to a different distro if it is taking up too much space or resources (my chrome book only has 16gb of ssd space and is not upgradable and has 2gb ram non-upgradeable if I remember correctly). I did have to change one command, the dev boot legacy is not correct for my chromebook, it is dev_boot_altfw=1.

Hi it's an excellent video. Really really thoroughly explained! However I just wanted to know that what if I ever want to have my Chromebook in the original condition (with chrome os) is there a way I'll be able to do that? Do you know how to configure the keyboard to let some combination of keypresses give that effect?
