Quick mounting tutorial for attaching undermount to granite countertops. This is only one of many ways to properly mount a sink. More videos to come.

Hi Jay, great video! Where can I pick up some of those sink clips and studs. I think stainless studs would be easy to find of course so my question is more about the clips.

Hi Dan, Go to any local hardware to get you machine bolts and wing nuts. And the clips, look here. Chemical Concepts. www.chemical-concepts.com/chemsettm-metal-sink-clips.html

Not sure if those nuts are going to stand the test of time with ground load support. The sink has to be able to holdup against a full and very heavy dutch oven and a full tub of water with pressure weighing down on it. IMO; it's always best to play it safe for the long run and go with wood planks top to bottom. It doesn't look pretty, but it's the long term alternative for remodels that do or do not have brand new wooden base cabinets.

Thanks for the comment and I agree with all that you have said. In this case, the sink base cabinet was so badly carved out from older remodels, I only had a couple options that I felt safe with. I do understand that for allot of people this option looks rather half ass. There is always chances for sink failure. But I would feel safe standing in this sink after 24 hours. And I'm around 165lbs on a good day. Its all the way the holes are drilled on the bottom. I drill down about 1/2" then wobble out the hole inside the counter. This creates a bigger void inside then what you see from the hole size. I have had to pull these studs out before. You either have to cut them out, or wrench them out. And if you wrench them out, the surrounding stone will blow out around the hole. The epoxied studs mixed with 100% silicone on the sink, this is a extremely solid option. Well that was a "way to long" reply. Sorry for that.

No worries on the long reply. Actually, it doesn't look half ass at all and with the assumed age of base cabs mixed with all that MDF, your explanation makes a lot of sense. I've personally never been an epoxy (as a filler) guy, maybe it's just bad luck and I got stuck with the cheap stuff, but that was a long time ago, I see they've improved on the product a lot since then.

@@GraniteByJay what if the granite countertop is only half inch thick? You will just drill right into the slab. Even if you use expoxy and glue, remember that natural stone is transparent and will show above four stained holes near sink. My dad does this all the time and just uses wood planks attatched to the plywood subtop, but i dont trust in wood planks. and then the hercules iron straps running along the sink looks ghetto because some countertops are exposed without vanity and floating on studs. i would go with epoxy glue, brackets and wing nuts (eight of them) but unfortunatly, they dont sell those at home depot or lowes. :( i dont know what to do..... please respond. @Joseph Corlett @ Granite By Jay

@@leosf9751 For 1/2" material, I would suggest this method for mounting your sink. Check out some my other videos on mounting undermounts. The sink setter will more then likely be a better choice. The stud method works well with 1 1/4" material because you can drill down 5/8" with no worries.

any basic silicone will do?

Try to stay away from the water clean-up sealants. Like the DAP or other brands. They will only last you about a year or two before failing. Especially around a tub or high use sink. I recommend 100% silicone. A little tougher to use because keeping it from smearing can be tricky, but it bonds so well to stone and other materials. I use silicone from a company in Ohio. Silco Inc. Some of the best and strongest stuff I've ever used. And they carry different tinted colors. Perfect for putting finish beads on backsplash. GE makes a good 100% silicone as well. But have only seen white, black and clear. Hope this helps.Thanks American.

Okay, good instructions, however. I've got 96 units with heavy duty garbage disposal and the clips bend over time and the sink gets loose. I just went to the 12th or 13th one and there were no clips at all. Anyway, I'm installing the clips but why undermount? It's stupid and require constant repair.

Hi Tony. A lot depends on how the sinks are mounted. And I do agree with you. Top mounts sinks are basically failsafe if the cutout is done right. But also, when an undermount is done right, It can be failsafe as well. I have sinks that I've mounted 10+ rays ago that are still as strong as the first day. If you're curious on other ways to mount a undercount sink, I have 3 more tutorial on different options. It really comes down to picking the best option for the situation you're in. There is really no one option fits all in the undercount sink game. Feel free to reach out again and hope 96 untits goes good for your. Thanks.

Clips rust and fail. Sinks should be strapped with a Hercules Universal Sink Harness or a Sink Strap from Regent Stone.
@GraniteByJay
@GraniteByJay 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. The Hercules system is a great way of mounting sinks. I agree. But in a lot of cases dealing with remodels, the sink base cabinet is in pretty bad shape. Making it unsafe to mount the sidewall supports of the Hercules to failing particle board. (As a side note) If you have enough water hitting these clips to rust them out, your problem is with the silicone-to-sink bond. I have been mounting vanity and kitchen sinks in this way for over 16 years and yet to have one fail if installed correctly. Every kitchen is different and each one has a different approach for the best and safest way to mount the undermount.

I personally use big head glue and brackets. Slim line fast and 100% success rate in 15 years. Works for me but every one is different and every job is different. If not broken don't fix it but keep it in mind.

With the thin front sink rail being the style, there isn't enough room for clips, adhered or inserted, where they're needed the most. If there isn't support at the center of a double bowl stainless steel sink, that thing's gonna leak, guaranteed.
