Chris thank you! 👍I've been chasing a parasitic battery drain for months. After watching your video. I realized I attached my red tach wire. Straight to battery at the fuse box. Not switched power. After doing a drain test I was getting 80 milliamps drain. It was the stupid tach all along.

well, all my vehicles have factory tachs.. so you have to wire one in like that if you dont have one in the dash.. i dont know if you are saying i did a shit job but thats the only way to add one..
@sbergum3836 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this video. It's a big help. I've watched a couple tach hookup videos that I shutdown midway through because they would pan under the dash and there would be a bunch of wire nuts. I know those don't belong anywhere on a car. Thanks for the test light tips too. Very helpful.

@greganniekorf36323 жыл бұрын
Hi Chris! Great video! I've got a '71 Chevelle SS 454 with a points distributor and my in-dash tach doesn't seem to be working. I'm not sure if the tach is bad or if there's a bad connection somewhere but I'd like to preserve the original look and feel. I have a spare dash-mounted tach lying around similar to the one you show in this video. Could I just connect the green wire to the "Coil" post on the back of the tach in the gauge cluster, connect the red wire to the 12V post on the back of the tach in the gauge cluster, and the black to ground and see if the external tach responds when I start the engine? If so, that would help me determine whether the wiring going to the gauge is faulty somewhere or if the factory tach is indeed bad. Thanks!
@tannerjackson54425 жыл бұрын
Should I crimp a spade connector on to the end of my green wire so it can connect to the distributor HEI connector??? BTW this is amazing by the way, u are super talented in mechanic teaching.

I got a tacho with 3 wires, red black and green, red and black when attached to a battery the led shows, so guess the green to the engine coil?
@TheAwmartin3 жыл бұрын
Find a “switched” circuit to plug the red wire into or you’ll drain the battery. Green goes to the negative side of the coil, or the connector on the distributor cap that says “tach”. Watch the video. It shows nearly all the possibilities for the green wire.

I have a 67 Camaro and my "ign fuse" is already being used. What are my options?
@chriscraft770227 жыл бұрын
you just have to spice into the wire going into it.. make sure you fuse it so you dont mess anything up.. just a little 10 amp fuse will due
@johnnyjohn80736 жыл бұрын
Buy what is called a Add-A-Circuit fuse holder or also called Expandable Circuit on Amazon. Or simply look for fuses, they will all come out. This is like a fuse adapter with 2 extra circuit extensions for connecting 2 more fuse circuits. It also has a red wire on the side. Keep in mind that the "ign fuse" is only a temporary power circuit, by this I mean that as long as you put your key on the ignition and switch it to On or turn on the engine, that's when it will turn on whatever you want to turn on at that time. For example a radio. The radio will only turn on as long as you have the key on On or when you actually turn on the engine. If you want your radio to turn on whenever you want with out the keys being on the ignition switch, you have to find a permanently powered circuit (as long as the car battery in connected of course). To do that you have to poke wires with a test light to see which wire is hot (powered on) all the time with out the key in the ignition. If you want temporary power circuits, poke a wire that doesn't and then switch the ignition to the On position to see if the light on your test light turns on. Switch the key to the off position and see if the light on your test light turns off. If those 2 things happen, you got a temporary power circuit. There's also another option for connecting extra things to your car. You can also connect it to the wires that power up your radio, your cigarette lighter, the dash lights, or even directly to the battery positive post with a very long wire. But why bother using a very long wire that goes from the inside of your car going all the way to the car battery when you can find power any where under your dash. Also don't forget, whatever you are connecting, it has to be grounded. Always connect the black wire to any metal part on the car with a screw. Try to install the wire to screws or small bolts that are factory installed. You may have to lightly sand the metal to remove paint or rust to make sure you get a good ground. Hope this helps.
