A well done video. Only thing I would suggest is to ether have run the "hot" legs as red and black, or at the very least, marked the white wires with black marker to denote that they are not a grounding (neutral) connector, but are used as a hot. Again, if this was me, I would have picked up Red / Black / green from the supply store. But still, a very good video.

You seem to know about electrical. I am installing a 2-zone unit, and the 240-volt connector has a place for re 11:58 d, and black, and the 3rd one is ground. Is the 3rd one for connecting the neutral white? The instructions are pretty bad. Thanks

Outside metal conduit corners are usually bought and attached. Bending the corners is usually only done during new construction where they can fit into the wall. There are good KZbin videos on installing metal conduit. Be sure to check your local codes since they can vary.

Why are these 240 volt mini splits not wired the same as a washer dryer combo which are four wire? There is no bonding? The green jumper wire would be removed so the bare ground wire could be used to bond the unit. A shock hazard similar to a washer dryer combo?

I bought a pioneer 12k btu but it’s a 115v 60Hz 1Ph with a max fuse of 25A. This means I need to run a 10g wire right? And does my breaker need to be single phase or double?
@HVAC_Mechanic
@HVAC_Mechanic 4 ай бұрын
10-gauge wire will work on a 25-amp circuit with no issues; just use the correct breaker size (Some 12-gauge wire is also rated for 25-amps but be sure to check its specifications). In the USA 120/240 Vac is single-phase.

My electrical panel is quite a ways away from where my mini split is going - complete opposite side of the house. I have an existing outlet on the INSIDE of the wall - can I re-purpose that and put a breaker/disconnect off of that (no longer to be used on the inside) to the outside or do I need to run a dedicated line? Dealing with a 115v unit.
@HVAC_Mechanic
@HVAC_Mechanic Ай бұрын
It will depend on whether the wire size is rated for the amps. 115-volt units pull more amps, often roughly 20 amps or more (but be sure to check). Indoor wiring can be 14-gauge or 12-gauge. 14-gauge wire is rated for up to 15 Amps, and 12-gauge wire is rated for 20 amps. While it is possible, it is likely best to have an electrician examine it.
@leonardpowell1444
@leonardpowell1444 Ай бұрын
@@HVAC_Mechanic I believe it requires a dedicated circuit, and that outlet is probably required to remain there, and it likely also has other outlets or devices on that same circuit, so such a conversion is not suitable.

I have an existing fuse disconnect 3 ton AC with a 40 amp breaker in the main panel. Can I add a 1 ton minisplit by replacing the fuse disconnect into 2 breaker subpanel of 30 amp and 20 amp subpanel?
@HVAC_Mechanic
@HVAC_Mechanic 4 ай бұрын
The wire and breaker all need the rated size. If the wire is rated for 50 amps (6-Gauge) and the 3-Ton Ac unit rated for 30 Amps than it can be done otherwise a new breaker and wiring will be needed.

do you need a disconnect box if your main panel is 4 feet from your condenser unit? I hoping to remove the disconnect box and run the L1 & L2 wires directly to the 20amp breaker in the panel. is that not safe?
@HVAC_Mechanic
@HVAC_Mechanic 2 ай бұрын
It depends on the location and is required by code, which I think is all USA jurisdictions, but it is possible it is not required in some areas. You will need to check local codes to know for sure. It likely is safe, but if an inspection is needed, such as for a new installation or selling the home, it will likely not pass. It is best to talk to a local electrician and see what they say.

You need a means of disconnect within 6 feet. Sounds like your breaker panel within 4 feet will suffice. Be sure to clearly label the breakers. Black sharpie pen is not a suitable labeling device.

@HVAC_Mechanic
@HVAC_Mechanic 3 ай бұрын
It is best to watch a video as there are a lot of them for wiring a disconnect, but a disconnect is just a way to break the wire connection quickly. Basically, each leg (wire) goes to one port and the same on the other side. Some electricians tie the common (white) wires together and just break the connection with the Hot (black) wire.

What’s wrong with using pvc? Haven’t you seen it used above ground on every power pole pretty much anywhere
@HVAC_Mechanic
@HVAC_Mechanic 2 ай бұрын
If the PVC is run sideways, it will sag, which is a bad look. In the climate where I live, the sun turns it black and gives it a burnt look after 2-3 years. It can be used, but it doesn't look good after a few years, at least where I live.

@HVAC_Mechanic

Where I live, it is roughly $300-$800. It will depend on where the electrical box is and where the unit is set; a long hard run will cost more. The only way to know the cost for sure is to get quotes.

I have a 12k btu unit 110v, can I plug this into a regular plug?
@HVAC_Mechanic
@HVAC_Mechanic 3 ай бұрын
No, that's not recommended, but it would depend on the amps the unit uses. A standard home outlet capacity is 15-20 amp so the units rated amp draw would need to be below that. It also would need all other outlets and lights on the circuit to be blocked off. It is best to run its own dedicated wiring and breaker.
