How to Install Wiser Smart Thermostat on Vaillant ecoTEC plus 824 Combi Boiler

Hi Luke, thanks a lot for sharing your video as I managed to install Wiser Thermostat myself (saved me £100 for cost of installation). I just did a little bit more research on the RT 24V vs RT 230V for the black and grey wires (as I didn't want to leave the black one loose as you suggested). In fact you can connect both the black and grey wires on the RT 24V (on the left hand side) and leave the RT 230V unused. It worked very well straight away! My boiler is now fully connected to my smart Thermostat. Thanks again

Where did you connect RT24V grey and black wire to the receiver?Did you also keep the loop between live and number 1? Thanks

My thoughts on this would be to use a 4 core cable. Also if you're connecting a 230v supply by linking (L) to (1) shouldn't you connect to the 230v RT at (3) rather than the 24v RT

This video was exactly what I needed to easily install a new Wiser thermostat, so thanks. But for the love of god: Unplug your boiler before doing this. As far as I could see the display for this boiler was still on when he opened it up, meaning the mains was still hooked up. I'm am amazed it was wired up without giving the guy a shock.

Tulan Shah Hi there I hope you don’t mind me asking you a question I have exactly the same boiler and circuit board am I right in thinking all I need to get it working on ordinary thermostat is supply LNE permanently & switch live to RT & that’s it? would really appreciate it if you know that that is right and you could let me know many thanks ps my Dad is old & wants to control it from he original thermostat kind regards Mark forgot to say & of course take out 24v link wire

Hey Luke, I spent hours scrolling through KZbin last night till 4am, eventually giving up. Tomorrow's a new day right? Anyway today I searched "room thermostat wiring" and your still , of a familiar Valliant PCB caught my eye. I have an Vaillant 825 & 637 with the same main PCB. Anyway following your video I was able to get 240v to the thermostat then realised I just needed a "switched live" signal from the RT to the boiler which was a single wire marked RT on the boilers main board. A little configuring to connect the RT to my phone through wifi and presto. Anyway thanks for the Video, to you & yours Merry X-Mas Tuya WifiSmart Thermostat Me81H £30 from Ebay

I recently changed the pcb board on the echotec 824 R1 model after seeing the f62 and f61 codes, very simple plug and play job, most important thing is to turn the mains power off and make sure the screen light has gone off before you proceed, then take a picture of all the connections incase you forget something, most of it is just clips so very easy to disconnect and reconnect, one of the parts has 5 wires that needs unscrewing and needs to be put back into the new board thats where the camera picture comes handy, also make sure the turn button goes back in correctly it has a shape on the button side of board that it needs to slot back into, hope this helps someone out there.

The boiler I just worked on had an intelligent VBUS thermostat connected to it and i din't know what to so with it? If I should take it out and loop it out or just remove the VBUS and leave nothing in the terminals?

Hi Luke, I was going to install the Tado smart thermostat on my Vaillant Ecotec 831 boiler however I spoke with an engineer who said while it can be done the Ecotec boilers it will not run as efficiently as they would using their own controllers. This is due to vaillant having their own Ebus chip and third party controllers can only control the boiler to be on or off rather than gradual heat control, this wasn't always the case with the previos vr65 which I think were opentherm but since the vr66 this seems to not work aswell with third party. Because of this I decided to only purchase the Tado radiator thermostats which come with the bridge in order to run those as an extra while keeping my Vaillant controller. Please can you or anyone else confirm this to be true?

We had the same problem initially the heating stuck on continuously. Had to turn boiler off at mains to stop heating. Plus hot water worked fine so i think once you’ve installed this unit once you learn a lot then its plain sailing. Cost me £130 for stat and hub then £400 for 2 electricians to puzzle over it

Depressing that an electrician got fed up with it then Drayton recommended guy who is gas safe engineer took so long night became day and still he was unsure

Hi @@mikeuk8486, no this isn’t the boiler plus version. It just has a fixed temperature for hot water taps and another fixed temp for radiators.

Hi Luke i am interested in installing nest thermostat and got few questions if you could answer please ,that will help me a lot 1.did you run 2 cables from heatlink ?one for power and other for connecting to boiler RT block ? or did you run a 5 core single cable ? could you please let me know and size of cable as well please Hope you understand what i mean 2.to powerup the heatlink itself cant we take power directly from FCU rather than running a cable from boilersterminal block ? thanks

HI RK, I used a single 4 core, but beleive I only needed 4 cables. I don't recall the gauge, but I believe it was a 14 or 16 gauge for each cable. You should be able to take power directly from the FCU. I have a video on the install for a nest as well. You can check it out.

Hi kashi, I got it from my local Leyland in the cable section. I’m not sure of the gauge but there is only one with 5 internal cables.

In my Valiant Eco Tec Pro 24 Combi Boiler, we haven't got a separate Channel Programmer. All controls are on the Boiler itself. We have got only a Room thermostat. So I am not sure do we have a wiring centre on my Boiler. I am checked my Valiant Boiler we have seen the wires coming from boiler terminal Live L, Neutral N, Earth E, wire coming from 3 & 4 terminal of boiler. So my understanding is i will connect Channel Programmer wires coming from L, N, E, 3 & 4. I am not able to find wiring centre, because we purchased home in December 2020 and boiler is installed in 2012. I am not sure what to do with wiring centre connection of wire 2 & 3 which go to room thermostat. Its shown in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/eJ2QamyNg5mmhJo look from time 2:30
