You are cutting the panels too short and they will hang at the ends when the door stays open for a longer time. A tip anyone installing this insulation. When measuring the length of each panel add an extra inch. You can always snug it in there and make it seal better. I would not alter the width as it is pretty darn close to the standard width.

Great project and something very useful. Wow, that should do the trick and keep you comfortable. My garage door came insulated from the factory as my door faces west and gets full sun light in the afternoon. It was well worth the extra money and it sure makes a difference.

Just finished my double garage door. At $89 a kit (two required for 16' x 7' door) is worth it. I found the it hard to open garage door with one spring, so I upgraded and installed double springs. My door had ONE, which was barely adequate for the door when new. Dual torsion springs is far better, but builders cheap out with one. You will need duct tape to hold one edge of the insulation on some bays. Most doors have angles running vertically. When the insulation can tuck under the angle it is supported. In bays where the insulation butts against the back of the angle nothing is holding it but the two anchors per panel bay. That is not enough to hold the edge. I got white duct tape for appearance. Silver or other color would look bad. Now the door, even with insulation is easy to open and close. This also saves wear on the garage door opener (which I had to replace the drive bushing which was trashed). Total cost $56 for spring set, self installed, not too bad. Two insulation kits $150 (one new stock $89 one old stock $70 see below), $7 for white duct tape. Total investment about $217 and about 3-4 hours. Looks nice and will keep the heat down in garage that got afternoon sun. I now need to add some vent fan or AC in the wall (garage is fully insulated and dry walled). Old vs New Stock. Look at BOX the one with the big R-8, this is the newer version. The old version has Garage. I had two kits one old and one new stock. The older stock is at least 4 years from what Owning Corning told me. The pink insulation was slightly more compressed when unrolled, and it was faded (not bright pink). The color fade is not critical since you don't see it, there is white vinyl cover. However the insulation affects how effective the insulation is. Over time it should puff out to at least 2" to give you the insulation value of R-8. After unrolling I let them sit flat for a day. They all puffed up. In some cases the new stuff was still slightly compressed. The older insulation did fluff up, and was about the same thickness as new, may be slightly less on average. So if you want fresh insulation look for the R-8 white letters in RED box...

I used 1 of these kits and realized after it took a week to ship id need 2...I started installing on the bottom portion of my garage but found that the poofy nature of the insulation would trip my garage door sensors causing my garage door to never open. I removed it from the bottom, used it on top, and then just went out and bought some kraft faced r11 and cut it to size. Yes the vinyl cover is nice protection but for the cost, I could do 4 garages with a single roll of r11 thats about 60 bucks have a higher r value and you can replace entire sections as needed instead of using the 6" patch tape they give you for an entire kit 😉

Nioe kit if you have an uninsulated door with the open panels inside to stuff the edges into. Do they make a kit when you are trying to add insulation to a flat insulated door on the inside? Since there is only an inch and a half of foam it is a weak spot in a cold climate and needs an additional layer of a couple of inches at least.

This looks light enough that the door should not have to be rebalanced whereas using foam board may require that. Can you recommend some kind of tape to seal the insulation to the center post?

I would use this but don't think it would work too well on my door. It is a wood door, smooth interior with no rails or similar to stuff these panels into. I'm looking for the right solution. I've thought of getting some of that reflective rolled stuff and see if that works, but minus using some form of glue, not sure how to keep it stuck onto the wood. Liquid nails was mentioned I guess.

Great video. I did the exact same thing with the exact same insulation to my garage doors about 10 years ago. It adds some weight but not much at all. I didn't have to adjust anything. The ONLY thing I don't like about this kit are the clips to hold the insulation on the door. They fall off way too often. I had to tape the edges of the insulation to the door. Also, it will bulge out at the bottom and interfere with your garage door sensors. For that, I took some extra speaker wire I had laying around to flatten it out enough to not interfere with the sensors. Overall, it works wonders. It keeps it about 15 - 20 cooler in the garage opposed to outside.

Made a big difference in my garage. It will be a lot better once I insulate the attic and walls. My garage is my work space we have covered parking behind the garage for my wife’s car. My garage has a Mitsubishi ductless heat pump so I have heating and cooling year round. Only been in this house a little over a year and will be another 5 before we have it where we want it to be. I used duct board on my door and it did seem to strain the opener a bit. Eventually I’ll put a stronger door opener that’s wall mounted to free up some ceiling space for more lights.

Be careful with this... some of the new residential garage doors opener mechanisms are only capable of lifting the weight of the garage door... adding the weight of the insulation can cause them to malfunction. You may need to upgrade your opener prior to installing the insulation.
