How to Introduce a New Guinea Pig to Your Herd

This is our introduction of Meep to the rest of the guinea pigs! This video will walk you through how to correctly introduce two or more guinea pigs to each other. The tips in this video were used from my experience with my personal guinea pigs as well as introductions at the animal shelter I work at.

Nice video. Bonding is pretty stressful and easy to underestimate how important getting it right is. It took Ginger & Chutney just a day to get on with each other but they were still occasionally rumbling for months after before they became the inseparable duo they are today.

I didn't quarantine my new piggy, I just took her straight to the vet to be checked out. The vet said she was totally healthy so I was able to start bonding that day. I know this is an expensive option but my house is soo small so I didn't't have another room to put a different cage in. But it worked well for me!

Wish I would have watched your video 2 weeks ago. We got a baby about 2 weeks ago and have had them separated in separate cages but put them together in a playpen. I’m afraid to put them together because my bigger one chases and tries to jump the smaller one. I wasn’t sure if that was ok, I didn’t want to over stress the baby. While watching this video I had them in the playpen and out hay in the middle and they were more calm than ever before and intermittently the older would chase the little one around. I’m going to try a buddy bath too. They have never bitten each other just chase and jump and basically have their heads up each other’s butts sniffing. I have two guinea pigs and i did everything you said to do, but the oldest does not like the younger one at all. The oldest was mean to her so we had to separate them before somthing realy bad happend. So now they are separated we are working on making a big costum cage and make it have a wall so they cant get to each other. Hey! I love their little beds at the end and this is super helpful! I adopted a little female (I think she is about 3) and I really want to get her a companion (I was looking at baby females at the store) but I don’t know if she has been around other piggies or how she will take to the baby. Fern Blundell So sorry about your piggy! Yes you should still be able to find your 3 year old a friend. Sometimes they are fine with an adult pig and sometimes they will only like being introduced to young/baby pigs!

Paul V I haven’t heard of two males being kept with females, but you could give it a shot. I have heard that the males will still be competitive for the females even though they are neutered, so I would just be extra careful to make sure the males aren’t aggressive to each other before leaving them all alone.

A rabbit crate will work as long as it has a minimum of 7.5 square feet for 1-2 guinea pigs to live inside :)

It should be okay! This was my exact situation with my first three pigs :) My first two were really bonded and I did have to do a slower introduction, but they get along fine now! Have fun with the new peegs!

A run should be fine! It's best if you measure the area to make sure they have enough space. 1-2 guinea pigs need a minimum of 7.5 square feet but more is always better :)

I have 2 male guinea pigs. One is almost 3 and the other is a couple of weeks/months old (Not sure on his exact age). I've tried introducing them. But my oldest likes to try and mount the other. Is that normal? He's also been trying to bite but I don't think he's ever hurt the baby. I want them to live in the same cage but for right now I have them in the same cage with a divider where they can see each other. I have the divider because my baby guinea pig is so small he can still fit through the grids. I want to make sure they will both be safe so I put the divider to avoid them getting together unsupervised for now.

I have two males under a year old...a chilled one and a more dominate one.... introduced a little baby boy but the dominate pig bossing everyone and is annoyed enough he’s throwing a tantrum ! He was growling at them both and stamping around chucking food bowls etc. If I start again in a neautral space will he ever be nice ? He loves my hubby but hates me. New baby and other one is ok tho....I’ve had to move the grumpy one out for the night as the new baby’s so small and nowhere to put it.

I have never had males, but I have heard that it's difficult to get 3 males to live together successfully. They would definitely need a pretty large cage! You can keep trying in neutral territory and taking it slow, but there is a chance that they will not get along all together. Just let them be grumpy together for a while unless they start biting! Growling and throwing food bowls is okay :)

Christi Solsberry Usually it is recommended to still do a quarantine to make sure they are not sick and to also get used to their surroundings in a new home. :)

Awesome video!! I have a 5 yr old female pig. We got her from a friend who couldn't keep her because she didn't get along with her other pig. This other pig was my pigs baby and they were kept in a small cage together. We have had our pig for about 3 yrs and she has been on her own all this time. Squiggly Pigs We decided to get a piggy! So far they've had a couple of play sessions and have done great!! Intro is done in neutral area with but of food and an open hide as you had suggested. We were not successful with quarantine as I have little hands at home and those hands wondered. Baby pig seems really healthy though! We were told she is about 4 months old, but I think she may be only a couple of weeks. She is eating hay, checking out pellets and fresh foods. She just fits in my hand. Does that seem about right?? Thank you so much for replying!! Getting a friend for our piggy has been the best experience so far. I will never have a single pig again!!

Don't get pigs from pet stores. Always give them houses to hide. Because as you said they are pray animals. 1 Square meter for each pig. Plus one extra. For cleaning citric acid is perfect.

don’t feed her human food! it’s actually really bad for them. Keep in mind that just because she likes it doesn’t mean it’s good for her just like dogs like chocolate but we know we can’t give it to them.
