Hi Chris, ive used all my allowance for my ISA for the year and i have £20000 invested in a general account. Should i put this in my SIPP, leave it in my General account or wait and and put it in my ISA next year? I cant get my head around selling my General account which I bought at a lower price and buying the same shares back in a SIPP or an ISA at a higher price. Thanks for any advice Ian
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian. Thanks very much for your comment. I can’t say without understanding your full circumstances what to do with the £20,000, but in answer to your other point about selling and re-buying… all you would be doing is simply replacing the assets at the same price. Your gain is locked in by the sale and you then repurchase the same assets through a more tax efficient wrapper at pretty much the price you sold them for. It is essentially the same as not selling the assets and them continuing to grow in the current environment, but if you did that the growth would not be sheltered from tax in the same way as if you moved the assets into an ISA or a SIPP. Hopefully that makes sense?

Great video as always! Couple of things to point out. On the pension allowance, I believe you can utilise any unused allowance in the past 3 years? If this is the case, assuming you haven't been maxing out your pension every year you could add more to your pot beyond the £52k mark you mentioned before you contribute to a GIA? Also, purely from a tax efficiency POV British legal tender gold coins are subject to no capital gains
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner3 жыл бұрын
Yea that is a good point - carry forward can certainly be utilised. Your income still needs to substantiate the full contribution though… i.e to make a £70k contribution, you’d need to be earning £70k in the current tax year. Unfortunately you can’t carry forward years that you’ve missed based on your earnings in those tax years - your contribution can only match your earnings in the current tax year. Nice mention on the gold coins I must admit that hadn’t come on my radar before! Direct gilts are exempt from CGT as well, but few people hold substantial amounts of gilt stock privately.

Hi Zoe. No problem. You can invest in a SIPP but your contribution would be limited to £3,600 gross. It is certainly worth considering the SIPP contribution because it would actually cost you only £2,880. The remaining £720 would be added via tax relief.

One point to add is that only employment income qualifies as pensionable, otherwise the limit is a £3600 gross annual contribution. I would love to know your thoughts on possible changes to this limit, if investment income taxes were to be closer aligned with income tax bands in the near future?
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner3 жыл бұрын
Yes only salary income counts as mentioned… sometimes people ask if dividends count, but they don’t of course. Only income through employment on which income tax is paid is counted. The limit of £3,600 has been there for many years. I’ve never heard any rumour of it changing or even being considered for review. In many ways, it is extremely generous - it allows people with no earnings to receive £720 in tax relief for free every year, and even potentially take that money out totally tax free as well if withdrawn within the personal allowance.

Great video Chris. Question pls, several financial speakers have been saying another crash of the shares/stock market is looming. Truth be told these crashes come every 8-10years. What’s your view on this pls? And how can one ever truly make money from investing long term in stock market if it crashes every ten years?
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner3 жыл бұрын
Great question Simon and one I relish… markets will crash - that is a natural part of the journey, but each crash leads to a recovery that takes values beyond the previous peak. Just look at stock market charts over the past 100 years… the long term trend is always upwards. If you back the fact that companies will always exist and will always continue to drive the world’s economy forward, you will make money simply by owning the market. Just look at the Dow Jones over the past 100 years - it’s not a straight line, but ultimately it heads in one direction. There will be companies that rise and fall, but commerce will always survive and succeed.
@CrystalField18893 жыл бұрын
@@chrisbourne-retirementplanner Thanks Chris. I get your point. Invariably does mean don’t sell your stock/shares when the market crashes? Ie say one has an investment pot worth £50k at the peak and then market crashes and same pot is now worth only £6.5k. You hold onto it till the grow back in the next peak? Cos if one sells you will only have 6.5k cash to invest in next peak will buy less assets
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner3 жыл бұрын
Yes absolutely Simon. Rule number 1 is never sell following a crash - it’s generally an opportunity to buy more - the market is on sale. That would be a hell of a fall from 50k to 6.5k though… there hasn’t been one like that since 1929.

Love the channel. Comments welcome on this particular scenario. I’m currently 61 and considering retiring 5 years before I’m due to receive state pension. My aim is to receive a regular income of £1,900 pm net. Finances wise I’m currently drawing a final salary pension of £6,120 pa gross £30,000 parked up in a std life policy as I’m still working full time. My current company pension pot now stands at £226,000. My plan is to take £6,000 pa from the std life policy for the next 5 years together with my current pension. That would give me £12,120 pa (tax free) My question is what kind of yield would my current pension pot of £226,000 pa over the next 5 years interest wise?
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. It’s really impossible to say what the yield will be over a period like that so I wouldn’t want to guess. The withdrawal figure of £6k from a £226k pot plus workplace pension doesn’t sound unrealistic though at less than 3% pa. Growth is never guaranteed of course, but this is within the realms of what is considered a sustainable withdrawal.

@chrisbourne-retirementplanner2 жыл бұрын
It may be Paul if you feel you need the reassurance of going through the process with somebody who can explain different risks and implications. It is possible to invest directly and there are some great resources to help you understand risk and differences between asset classes like stocks and bonds. Generally, the key things are to keep costs under control and to have a wide exposure to the global stock and bond markets if you haven’t done much investing before.
@gilestaylor29573 жыл бұрын
Enjoying the content, nice and concise. What would you do with your emergency fund to make the most of it while keeping it accessible? Cheers
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Giles. I would simply try to get the best rate of interest that I could, but an emergency fund needs to have zero capital risk and be immediately accessible, so there is little that can be done other than that. It shouldn’t be viewed as money to grow though - it is simply an insurance policy. The important thing is not having too much of an emergency fund - that’s as bad as having too little of one.
@gilestaylor29573 жыл бұрын
@@chrisbourne-retirementplanner thanks for the reply and all fair points. Shame to have it just sit there doing nothing and effectively lose value over time. Considering a 20/80 safe life strategy and putting a little more in to cover any dips if it's needed in the short term.
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner3 жыл бұрын
Even high quality bond funds can fall in the short term Giles, and the expectation of return from that particular fund would be barely higher than cash. You have to consider whether the potential pay off is worth it - if you have £10k in a bond fund with an expected return of about 2%, versus an account paying you let’s say 0.25%, your potential additional gain is £175. The trade off is though that in order to gain that £175, you have to accept that your money could fall by £500-£1000 just before you need it. It’s not a sufficient pay off for the additional risk in my opinion. The growth in other parts of your portfolio should far outstrip the loss of spending power on your small emergency fund over time. Look at your money as a whole rather than the emergency fund in isolation. Liquidity is just one aspect of portfolio management that comes at the expense of growth… growth is another aspect that comes at the expense of capital risk. All of this is part of efficient money management.

Hi Declan. If paying into your own personal pension, the tax relief is added on top of what you pay in by the pension provider, who then claims the relief back from HMRC. You can invest into funds like LifeStrategy through a pension.

Another top video Chris. You offer a refreshing angle to investing rather than the usual "portfolio reveals" or "best Vanguard ETFs". One question about GIA. Are the gains taxable only when you "cash out" and actually pocket the money (if you've gained of course). So if you leave it in the GIA and it goes up in value after five years you only declare the profit in your SA if you take the profits out (and they exceed £12.5k)?
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Gordon! Yes I do try to steer clear of the cookie cutter stuff. You’re correct on the GIA - tax is only paid on an investment when the gains are realised. If the GIA pays out income in the form of dividends or interest though, that is potentially taxable if it exceeds your allowances.

Brilliant video Chris. What's your opinion about Junior ISAs in addition to normal ISAs so effectively putting upto £29k in the ISA wrapper every year. I understand that the funds in JISA will belong to the child on adulthood but that's fine as I see it as a tool to avoid inheritance tax. Also, thanks for flagging investment bonds. I need to read up a bit more to see which one might work better for inheritance tax planning.
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Umair! Well the good news is that JISAs avoid the parental settlements rules, so contributions can be made without the income becoming taxable on you. The contributions will be gifts though, so any gifts in excess of £3k per annum will still form part of your estate as a PET for 7 years. As you have already noted, it is the child who has full control at 18. Re investment bonds, it is generally the trust used rather than the bond itself that determines the IHT efficiency. Advice is usually always required in this area.

Thank you! Great comment - I’m really pleased to hear that my vids are helping. If you’re making contributions through a company you can (usually) pay in up to £40k per tax year, regardless of how much salary you pay yourself. This is because the tax relief is on the company (corporation tax deduction) rather than the individual (income tax). The rule essentially exists because HMRC won’t refund more income tax than someone has actually paid. They are generally happy for a pension contribution to be deducted as a company expense though providing certain rules are met (the company’s profits are sufficient to justify the contribution… the person who is receiving the pension contribution is playing an active role in the company… etc)

I like the desk as a background. Chris, thanks for the video. My question is: what if I want access to my money sooner than retirement age? I am 41 and thinking of retiring in the next 5 years. If I invest on my pension I will need to wait for a long time. Any ideas on how to save money on tax? Thanks for your videos! They are great! PS: I’ve reached out for a 121 consultation and if these are available, I’d love to book one.

Hi there! Thanks for your great comment. I would say the other main tax wrappers would take precedence if you are planning a very early retirement (ISAs, investment bonds etc). Check this video out if you haven't already for more details on this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpqQcqJ7gKigors. I wouldn't completely exclude the pension because it could still be useful for later phases of your retirement, but more emphasis will need to be placed on other wrappers to bridge the gap. I don't think I've received your message re consultation? Have you emailed me at the address shown in my About section?

Really useful video Chris. Would love to be at the stage where we can invest over £100k in a year! Wouldn’t we all?! I really like your desk setup 👍👍👍

Thank you! Yes it would be nice if everyone was in that category. We probably all will be in the year 2121 😊 The desk seems to be the winner from the comments I’ve had 👍🏼

NOBODY knows how stable their employment situation is.
@chrisbourne-retirementplanner3 жыл бұрын
Some do more so than others. Some people are key employees in their business with skills and experience that would be extremely difficult to replace. If that business is also highly established and profitable, you could say that they have a stable position. Other people, particularly those in the public sector and with specific skills and training (like doctors and nurses) have robust employment positions. I have an extremely high level of confidence in my position… it is definitely something that some can be more sure of than others.
