I think it would be better to demonstrate on-board without straps, most people learning to jibe wont have straps yet. I understood much better when you are riding a big board with no straps, more similar to what i am learning on. I think my problem is i dont have my feet near the middle of the board, my feet are near the edges of the board to give more leverage to make turns. I think i have to learn to ride with my feet closer together and more toward the center of the board. I think switching my feet will be easier. Love these videos. Larry

Thanks guys! I personally find it super helpful to draw my line in the water with my eyes. For some reason it locks me into the turn. Also, I was a sailing instructor for a while, and maybe the first thing I’d make sure students knew was reading ripples to know true wind direction. Coming out of the jibe as you watch the water you’ll know exactly where your pointing relative to the wind. I’d be lost without them, maybe. Also, “up on fire!” Love it!

Excellent and crisp Jibe video. Thanks Damien and Gwen! No one commented here on your video filming technique and editing ... it is superb. I really liked the comment from Gwen about the Jibe turn ... "the wind has almost nothing to do with it", I agree. Thanks! Damo; picking a landmark on shore to help locate yourself prior to reversing direction is a great tip. Gwen; concentrating on the correct board and foil position is key as the wing will follow in the turn. Thanks to you guys yesterday, after watching your video, I made my first heel to toe and back to heel after over 200 days on the water! I’m old but determined ; ) Still struggling to keep my balance toe side.

Awesome video, can't wait to try out keeping my turns tight. I am pretty sure that's my main issue. Also, the last bit about giving love to your loved ones and being in the moment is why I love your channel so much. That's what this sport is all about - staying in the moment. When I am on the water I am laser-focused on every little movement, every little gust, every little wave. Implementing that mindset in your day-to-day interactions with those you love is even more important.

I've just started completing my gybes and riding toe side both ways (switching feet not working yet). My tip not mentioned in your video is to switch your front hands palm to palm. The swap can be done instantly giving you more time to concentrate on your feet. I found this made a huge difference for me. I think Gwen is doing this but Damo is going palm to overhand both on the land demo and on the water demo. Massive thanks to you both for getting me this far. Coming from windsurfing and kitesurfing i'm loving every minute of this new challenge.

Things I found super helpful: Going downwind for a bit is fine on a powered day - which is the best time to practice IMO. You’ll be unstable but this is a super useful wave riding skill anyway. It turns out you have way more time than you think you do during that moment when you turn downwind, but you only start to realize this when that 70-90 degree rotation feels unremarkably cozy. Note: when I swapped too early (70 degrees into the turn for example), I found myself immediately yanked off the board. Again, getting comfortable riding directly downwind in overpowered conditions was helpful here: It slows you down and gives you time to think, makes everything safer, reveals how much time you really have to make the swap, and teaches you to disengage the carve before you roll over too far toeside. Ah - and that's important too. I think I only roll toeside until about that 90 degree mark. The rest of the rotation is established remarkably quickly once I swap hands: you can immediately yaw the board and rotate it 45 degrees in an instant once you reestablish power, I find I don’t complete my gybes by carving a full 180 degree turn. Instead I carve about 90-110 degrees, lose my speed, and just as I’m about to stall, I switched the wing.

Thanks for the video. I would have liked to see this using gear more similar to what most novices like myself would be using - less agile, larger boards with larger, lower-aspect front wings. I'm curious to see how much lean is required and what to expect for glide and riding toe-side.

Oehhhh NICE! I know this is an older video but KZbin made me bump into it and I think this is JUST what I need now! It looks like this jibing without changing feet is the first thing you recommend doing once you're comfortable foiling in one way? I love the great instructions, very clear! And great footage too! Thanks guys. I can't wait to try it! Unfortunately there's going to be no wind (less than 10 kts) for the foreseeable future but I guess I'm going to have to be patient haha. Something that really help me before jibing is that, you can foil in your comfortable side but don’t push your other side. I will explain better, my walk of shame was getting way to much and some old guy told me that my bad side is the one going back to the beach (unfortunately) so “don’t foil in that side”, yea I know that sounds weird but that being focused just in to keep me up and maintain the direction help me gaining trust in both sides. One day I was foiling in both directions without realizing 😁 this videos help a lot!!!

Excellent work guys. Quick question please. Are gybes easier on a low aspect foil for stability or a high aspect foil which has more glide? Thanks
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube 2 жыл бұрын
I would say glide so HA is better as you will stay up on foil longer. Low aspect can have a lot of drag and the second you start to slow down you come off foil. They both work but glide is good.

Thanks guys. Been winging about 14 times. My foil set up was a 1850 mid aspect foil 40 inches wing span. Went to a new set up with a 1900 but it is a low aspect Gong Curve (36 inches wide). Much looser when riding but with the 1850 I was making about 1 out of 4 jibes (heel side to toeside). With the new foil I only made 2 yesterday. I seem to just drop off of foil, horrible session. I can ride to the left and right as long as I want. Just cant turn around On top of it all I ripped my wing getting out of the water. Very frustrating day. LOL
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube Жыл бұрын
Stephen, This is always tricky and I am sorry to hear about your session we have all been there! A good note no matter your ability. All foils are different and ride different and even a very experienced rider can jump on another foil and struggle! Your body gets used to things and a change on a foil can be very hard. A few factors low aspect is draggy and does not have good glide making it hard to keep the lift throughout the jibe, will be nice on the role and turn easy but the glide will be worse. Think Glider planes. They are very high aspect and will be easy to keep LIFT. I would go back to your mid aspect or even hunt for a High aspect foil!

Can you talk a little about foot position on the board and how your front foot is perhaps left of the Center line or where you place it and does it move at all during both Gybes.. Thanks Damo and G
@DamienLeroyYouTube
@DamienLeroyYouTube 2 жыл бұрын
Usually when you get your feet set and you enter the jibe you are committed. I usually adjust the feet right before hand make sure they are as comfortable as possible, then use my hips to shift forward or back or side to side to keep my self balanced and on foil though the turn! Sometimes you can make minor adjustments by heal/toe movements on the board to move an inch or two. Not sure if that helps.

It’s super hard. Jibing it’s the worst part. I was able to wingfoil straight but doing my jibe it’s going to take me a while. I started doing my feet swap, I will try not to, I’ll try to go toe side instead see if it’s easier. The first time I tried toe side I couldn’t control the wing but now I have more experience with the wing. My problem is that if I put my left leg on front I feel that I have no control over the board.

As an ancient windsurfer, riding toe side feels really unnatural to me. I am completely off balance even if I'm riding on the surface at slow speed. I guess I just need to practice it, but the water just got cold again suddenly and getting dunked in cold water doesn't feel like the greatest reward for trying to learn something new. I think in another jibe video, you showed how Harry Andrews tends to enter the jibes with the feet relatively equal. That's how I have had the most success, but that does put me at a disadvantage in terms of front/back balance. I have a 5'2" board (85L) and a 6'2" board (110L). The short and light board gives me a lot more control in the air (less swing weight), but if I touch down, I'm much more likely to take a swim than with the larger board. One option would be to take a non-foiling daggerboard beginner windsurf board again and try to get comfortable slogging toe side on a really stable board like that. Even the 6'2" board feels tippy if I try to go toe side even though it's actually super stable if I'm riding heel side. I think I'll learn this eventually, but I'm starting to have a feeling it might take a bit longer than I originally thought. Part of that is that I'm not a "go for it" type of person, so I'm probably going in too slow and too cautiously, which of course makes the board harder to balance etc. Jibing on skis in the winter was super easy and smooth, but with skis, you just slide your feet a bit and that's the foot switch done...
