One more tip is that if you aren't clearing jumps, don't just use more speed. Good technique makes up for extra speed when jumping. I took my large 29er dual suspension to a dirt jump park and I was either casing, or accidentally nose-bonking table tops because I was going in with too much speed. I had a hard time figuring out what was wrong, but then I just hit the tables with less speed than I thought I needed and focused on standing up to the jump face and I cleared the whole line with ease!
@janneboman85733 ай бұрын
Yep. My friend was nervous about a jump and just used more speed to be extra sure to clear the gap. Bad choice. Nose dipped in the air and he went OTB. I called the ambulance. Broken wrist, collarbone and dislocated shoulder.

Not sure about the scooping the feet part. Generally if you just lift your legs/ bend the knees the pedals will naturally follow, but as all things go, the only way to do is to do it. You can only learn by doing the thing you wanna learn.

Thanks Blake. Another great video! I think there's still debate on the timing and amount of pre-load (and rebound) of the FRONT fork on steep lippy jumps on a full suspension bike. Is there no fork preload? Some? Lots? When? The video on jumping that I would LOVE to see, but no one has ever made would be to suit up in a full face, and a protector with a nice deep foam pit and have y'all demonstrate getting sent over the bars (safely into the foam pit of course). I've been sent over the bars in two main ways (with no foam pit haha), the first is like you said, putting your weight back and getting catapulted, but the second way I get ejected is when I accidentally let my fork slam or soak up a very lippy jump, and then when the front tire comes off the lip, the fork rebound in the air pulls me forward. It's sort of like preloading too late, or letting the fork suck up the face of the jump. Sorry for the long comment! It would be great to see you guys get bucked forward or dead sailor into a foam pit in slow motion!
@playgroundchooser4 ай бұрын
Oof, that sounds painfully familiar. I reduced the rebound speed on my fork this year and I'm not getting it as bad now. But rock gardens are harder... so there's that. 😂

maybe 1 key parameter not covered here ( and it’s the case in 99% of the Jumpping tuto videos): The speed! You could perfectly know what to do “Compress, stand up, look at landing zone etc” if you don’t have proper speed nothing will happen or you won’t be able to clear the jump properly.

I'm confused - use the bunny hop technique but says later keep your weight central to stop yourself getting bucked. The bunny hop technique involves aggressively moving your weight to the back? It would be great if GMBN could break down how the jumping bunny hop technique is different from the "on the flat" bunny hop technique 🙏
@Greg-ht2uv4 ай бұрын
@@clivejcellis on flat ground you shift back to get the bike up, on a jump the ramp does the lifting. But you need to have the same stand up explosive motion and then follow through.
@clivejcellis4 ай бұрын
@@Greg-ht2uv thanks. Yeah I just use my legs to jump atm but im trying to dial Blake's boost technique and get my arms involved. I think he uses a technique similar to the bunnyhop. Pushing down on the handlebars to unweight the front wheel at the top of the lip but rather than shifting his hips back, I think he pivots at the hips as his arms extend. His legs then become fully extended as the back wheel reaches the top of the lip. Not entirely sure though but I think that's what's happening. Will give it a go and hope for the best.

This is my problem too. As a very experienced dirt bike rider I felt confident jumping my MTB. When I got airborne my feet went in a different direction from my pedals. I got to take a little nap on the trail and I took a bit of gravel home with me buried in my face. On a motorcycle it's easy: gas it off the lip, grip the tank with your knees and all is good. However, bikes don't have a tank and there's no throttle. How do I keep my feet on the pedals while in the air? How come none of the 'How To Jump' videos ever address this?
