Well timed video. Went up from 26" 110/130 to 29" 150/160 and the first ride happened yesterday. Jumps feel remarkably different now. I'm over cooking everything.

One more tip is that if you aren't clearing jumps, don't just use more speed. Good technique makes up for extra speed when jumping. I took my large 29er dual suspension to a dirt jump park and I was either casing, or accidentally nose-bonking table tops because I was going in with too much speed. I had a hard time figuring out what was wrong, but then I just hit the tables with less speed than I thought I needed and focused on standing up to the jump face and I cleared the whole line with ease!

I'm confused - use the bunny hop technique but says later keep your weight central to stop yourself getting bucked. The bunny hop technique involves aggressively moving your weight to the back? It would be great if GMBN could break down how the jumping bunny hop technique is different from the "on the flat" bunny hop technique 🙏

Not sure about the scooping the feet part. Generally if you just lift your legs/ bend the knees the pedals will naturally follow, but as all things go, the only way to do is to do it. You can only learn by doing the thing you wanna learn.

Cheer ms Blake, Next stage of my mtb progression is jumps and the thoughts of what can go wrong can override what can be done but with your usual excellent explanations along with your default enthusiasm, I’m going forward with a plan of those steps to work with 😎

I can think of one or two riders with channels on here, who don’t have great technique (particularly the leg extension part of taking off), but gets lots of kudos. Perhaps, they should be directed to this excellent video?

Thanks Blake. Another great video! I think there's still debate on the timing and amount of pre-load (and rebound) of the FRONT fork on steep lippy jumps on a full suspension bike. Is there no fork preload? Some? Lots? When? The video on jumping that I would LOVE to see, but no one has ever made would be to suit up in a full face, and a protector with a nice deep foam pit and have y'all demonstrate getting sent over the bars (safely into the foam pit of course). I've been sent over the bars in two main ways (with no foam pit haha), the first is like you said, putting your weight back and getting catapulted, but the second way I get ejected is when I accidentally let my fork slam or soak up a very lippy jump, and then when the front tire comes off the lip, the fork rebound in the air pulls me forward. It's sort of like preloading too late, or letting the fork suck up the face of the jump. Sorry for the long comment! It would be great to see you guys get bucked forward or dead sailor into a foam pit in slow motion!

@playgroundchooser 2 күн бұрын
Oof, that sounds painfully familiar. I reduced the rebound speed on my fork this year and I'm not getting it as bad now. But rock gardens are harder... so there's that. 😂

What’s not mentioned is the need to ride with people within your skill level. This is a huge oversight for people learning how to jump. Ride with people too skilled and you will crash trying to keep up.

maybe 1 key parameter not covered here ( and it’s the case in 99% of the Jumpping tuto videos): The speed! You could perfectly know what to do “Compress, stand up, look at landing zone etc” if you don’t have proper speed nothing will happen or you won’t be able to clear the jump properly.

It sounds backwards but loading the back wheel too much can cause it to buck you. Practice a neutral position on your bike. Everything will come with time and practice! Keep at it 🤘

Try practicing bunny hops over a tree limb over and over and then over the lip of a table top, the relaxing is the key or being comfortable airborne and you'll love it. Start small and take your time.

@@godspeed821 I have a friend that feels the same way, his confidence is very low, finally he went for it and got hurt, don't do that, your confidence will tell you if you need to keep pursuing or not. My friend said he will never leave the ground again and that's the best for him. You know what is best for you but don't let confidence block you. You are right though, it's not for everyone but that doesn't mean you are any less of mtn biker than someone that stays in the air. Snobs think they are but that's bs. My friend is one of the best at speed than I've ever seen anyone. Most of the I'm better than you because I can jump crowd would end up crashing if they were to hang with my friend on a track. Remember that my friend !

i'm not saying i'm good at jumping, but spending a lot of time doing jumps helps the most. the technique is most important, but spending time doing is as important. you lose all technique and confidence if you don't keep practising.
