The CAR WIZARD 🧙‍♂️ has talked about preventative maintenance several times in his videos and the owner of this 2012 Mercedes SLK350 took that to heart. The owner really loves this German car and wants to keep it on the road.

I'm still chuckling about the "lifetime " fluids. My E46 BMW wants to wait for 15000 miles for an oil change. Yeah right, I'll stick to 5000 thanks. It's gotten me 243000 miles so far.

That’s the case with any car. Preventive maintenance is a must. I am a mechanic just like the car wizard only in Australia. I always advise preventive maintenance on any car I service. If you own a car be prepared to maintain it. If you want to scrimp & save pennies then don’t come to my shop that is not how I work. If you are prepared to listen to advice & service it as required you will be rewarded with trouble free motoring. Nowadays with everything built to a price. It is even more important to service it properly & not scrimp pennies. I will almost always guarantee saving pennies will be more expensive over the long term.

One of my best friends that I've known forever has been a mechanic for over 30 years and he has a 1999 E 420. He says that was before Mercedes went crazy. You get a Mercedes built since about 2010 and when they hit around 150,000 miles they become like a Dodge/Chrysler, meaning that they are in a constant state of repair. And a lot of those repairs cost big $$$.

Its the deferred little issues that kill you. Fix things as they come up, don't wait until 6 items need to be addressed. And follow the service schedule, although "lifetime" fluids should all be changed by 100k. I had a 2015 Touareg TDI and spent $2500 in scheduled services over the 120,000 miles I had the vehicle. It had a few emissions related repairs covered under warranty (nox sensor and map sensor). I had 2 out of pocket repairs, a backup sensor and a door handle for kessy, which each cost about $500. And when I traded it in, every feature worked, it didn't have any leaks and it ran and drove like a new vehicle. Yes it was expensive to maintain, but wasn't bad spread out over time.

My M276 V6 350 petrol engine with 90,000 miles from new: Oil changed every 6 months with quality synthetic, genuine Mercedes filter, new spark plugs every 2 years, one injector failed @ 78,000 miles = replaced all 6 with new. One ignition coil failed @ 80,000 miles = replaced all 6 with new. Oil in inlet plenum very common after 70,000 miles = new PCV valve (at rear of engine, below HP fuel pump, awkward to access). Curiously minimal carbon build up in the inlets (fuel used: Premium 98 octane) unlike Audi V6's. No other issues, engine is still silky smooth. Merry Christmas All 🧑‍🎄 😀
@berwhaletheavenger
@berwhaletheavenger Жыл бұрын
You can in fact change the trans oil on these 7G autos without special tools but you MUST use a ramp. You undo the drain plug and some oil comes out - but not all. You then need to use a long screwdriver to dislocate the plastic tube from the oil pan/sump when a LOT more oil will come out. Chances are it will break so you need to buy and install a new one. Secure this to the sump with a strong tie wrap/cable tie. Then pump oil in using a hand pump with a slightly cranked end on the flexible rubber oil pipe. Fill it until oil starts to run out, start the engine and add more oil. You need either diagnostics or a hand held heat temp gun to measure the oil temp - I think it's 45 degrees. Don't skip this. Run it through the gears and check again. The sump bolts must really be replaced as well, tighten them to 4 nm plus 180 degrees. So yes, a typical sh*t Merc design which like all this modern German crap is designed to be horrid to work on DIY. This is the R172 which is a facelifted version of the 2002 R171 and even a 2012 example is old enough to have a rotten rear subframe if it's lived in a colder wet climate - again, typical modern Merc crap.

I can remember when Mercedes info was on microfische. A mechanic mate of mine sent his apprentice down to the dealer to pick up a radiator hose and the apprentice said to the guy that the one he was given was nothing like the one on the car. being an experienced operator the MB guy asked for the VIN of the car. It turns out the vehicle was a back up car from the London -Sydney marathon and had a truck radiator. the owner of the car was unaware of this but mighty happy to find out about it.

Same here, huge difference. When they say every 2 yrs, they mean it. I ran the ATE Typ200 for a while, but was mildly freaked out when informed Mercedes doesn't approve 1 single brake fluid other than their own. Apparently it has more to do with the esp, abs, & seals as well as the condition of the lines themselves. I'm unsure to the extent this is true, but since they approve a ton of different oils & trans fluids yet only their own brake fluid, I'll take their word.

My first car was a 1975 Opel Manta that was given to me in 1985 by my grandparents who kept it at their vacation home in Arizona. All my vehicles have been serviced by the book, using the severe service schedule, by the dealership or after the warranty expired by a competent independent mechanic. I have driven them been 225 to 250k miles, I have a 175 mile round trip commute to work, before selling them and trading them in. None of them have been especially problematic and those problems that did show up were mostly minor.

My family often questions me as to why I'm replacing this..or putting a new part on when the one I took off looks just fine. I tell them do you close the gate when you let your dog out in the yard? Or do you leave it open hoping the dog will stay in the yard and not run out....let's say..to chase a cat?.then close it?...✌️

I think does trim pieces were common to break off. Both of mine were loose and the dealer replaced them under warranty.

I have a barn full of German cars, and I can't get them to break. Maybe because I let them warm up for a minute before flooring them, or maybe just repeated blind luck, year after year. I have no intention of keeping them for over 100K miles. I can afford German cars, and I replace them at about 5 year intervals.

Man, I miss my 2005 SLk350. She was beautiful and running great. Such a shame it got wrecked right after Christmas of all times. Wish I could find another one like it within 100 miles that wasn't being sold by a really shady dealer.

FCP Euro put together a pan, filter and tube kit for the older, non-A89 722.9s. I am using it in my 07 S550 right now. Uses the old red fluid but I get the better filter and pan design. Some say this is a somewhat unvalidated setup but mine's been fine for 10k.....

I loved this new mercedes design when it first came out. But sadly every other brand has copied it, and it no long stands out.

I wish you guys weren't in Kansas. I'd love to bring my 924S down for it's water pump and belt service when it's time, but Iowa to Kansas for a $1400 service just doesn't seem worth it. Loving the vids Wizard!

German cars are built with much tighter tolerances in mind. Always be aware of the retail price of a used vehicle, that will usually be a good indicator of the cost of maintainence. An M-B S400 is naturally, not going to cost the same to maintain as a Toyota Corolla, and if you try to pretend that it IS, then its going to punish you.

I have 327,000 miles on a 2013 GLK 350 with this motor and 7GTronic Trans and not a tap turned in 11 years. Still feels like it has all of the 302 hp it had back when new.

Still not enough in my opinion. These transmissions can have up to 9L of oil. The good old pan drop is quite literally a drop in the bucket beyond replacing the filter.

V 12 nova ? Is there any update on that it's been up there for a bit ? These cars are nice & yes, people don't realize the cost of up keep. Just like my caprice ppv or even my neighbors c8 & c4 corvettes. Be safe, team.

There is nothing about that car that would cause me to spend big money to buy one . Some of the old Mercedes are sort of cool and I would consider buying one of them . Ones from around the 60s to late 70's
