Tip 4 (feed big pellets) is definitely true. :'-) I'm keeping my musk turtle with swordtails and normally, he isn't too interested in them. At feeding time though, when he knows there is food around but is unable to locate it, he'll start (lowkey) chasing any nearby swordtails instead... He is mostly unsuccessful but did manage to grab one yesterday. Pity, it was a nice fish.

Great video/videos! Question, what size is your tank? I love the combination of fish youve got and would like to replicate it to some extent but only have a 40 gallon at the moment. The turtle is still a hatchling, about 3 inches. Should i wait til i get a bigger aquarium?
@SGBeardedAquarist5 ай бұрын
Thank you. The tanknin this video is 50 gallons. Same length and width as a 40, just taller. However my turtle has since grown to about a 10-12 inches and I've upgraded to a 300 gallon custom aquarium!
@SGBeardedAquarist5 ай бұрын
You could add the fish now, just don't not too many and not big ones. Then you can change the stocking along the way as you upgrade your tank. Would be good to bear in mind that your turtle will continue to grow in the intermediate tanks until it reaches full size so good to have some room to grow so the tank doesn't get too small too fast with the additional fish on there!

Man I could talk to you about this for hours. The koi pond is pretty big with about 50 fishes living there and still lots of space. I plan to take the turtles out before night back into their tank. Does anyone think I would be successful for the turtles not to bite the fishes living there?

this video is good! I came upon your videos on fish + turtle in same tank because I am exploring the options of adding fish to my turtles' tanks. I need to resolve midges breeding issues. midges appears to have taken a liking to my turtles' tank and I have already introduced 1 sucker fish each to the two tanks that I have in my balcony area (my turtles' cove). I dun intend for the fishes to be my turtles' food source, but I really need larvae-eating fishes to discourage/control the midges' breeding activities. the previous video does provide great tips, along with this, I think I know what fishes to get for my turtles tank. their tanks aren't for aesthetics, just plain blue and black plastic tanks as its purpose is for my turtles to have a choice to swim in, poop in, be fed their pellets in, chill and relax in, which is in addition to dry areas in the balcony where we placed shades and hiding spots for them to sleep in. will keep you posted and perhaps you could share with your viewers who are facing similar issues or having similar objectives as mine to keep fishes in turtles' tank

I'm not very familiar with musk turtles other than the fact that they max out around inches? And aren't good swimmers. A 20 long sounds just about adequate for the turtle. At most I'll for a school of 6 of a small and relatively active tetra species.

New to the channel much respect Thanks for the info would like to know tho if these tiger barbs and blood parrots are toxic to the turtle if the turtle was to get hold of them one day Seeing a lot about tropical fish being toxic for turtles that’s why things like guppies mollys plattties etc etc are recommended not these types ?
@SGBeardedAquarist3 жыл бұрын
Nope they are not. No fish is toxic to turtles unless they are already toxic in general. The only thing is some fish have thiaminase, which can inhibit the absorption of thiamine, which is an impt nutrient. But it is not toxic.. and nutrient deficiency is a chronic thing. That's why fish like goldfish are cautioned against as feeder fish (where the intention is to feed continually over a long period of time and in sizable amounts). Keeping any of such fish (not sure if tiger barbs and BPs are considered) as tank mates and the turtle managing to get hold of them wont cause any ill effects because it's not consistent feeding in sizable amounts over a prolonged duration. Hope this helps.

Seems like its quite common for the "sudden" death to happen. My longest lasting fish with the turtle is a clown loach that has been in there since I started the tan (2 years)
@ImNotLostButWhereAmI3 жыл бұрын
I’ve got a pleco with my two turtles that has been in there for 3+ years. The pleco was smaller than the turtle for the first two years but now is bigger and the turtles don’t dare mess with him. Sometimes they’ll accidentally kick the pleco in the face and the pleco will back up and ram the turtle at full speed several times in response. It’s pretty funny as he doesn’t hurt them but they tumble in slow motion thru the water. Several months ago I added 5 African cichlids and they’ve all been perfect with each other. Cichlids seem to be behaving well with each other too as they know they can’t really be the alpha of the tank.
