Do you know what your left arm is doing in your golf swing, or what it should be doing? Is it moving correctly? How does the left arm effect compression in the golf swing, consistency and accuracy? How does it effect my impact position?
In this video I'll discuss how the left arm is supposed to work in the golf swing, both in the backswing and the downswing so that you can swing like a pro. Here's a little secret that the pros know and you don't: the left arm should always be rotating throughout the entire golf swing.
That's right. The worst thing you can do is try and hold the club face square throughout the golf swing and worse yet, through impact. ---

I've been playing golf for over 25 years this is the best explanation that I have seen on KZbin or by any instructor explaining the left arm. I have fought for this issue for years and years and I appreciate the time and effort you put into the full explanation of this in your video. it is greatly appreciated by this old hack golfer!

I've been playing golf for ten years. About six years ago I was out at the range. The guy on the next tee had a swing right out of the picture books. We got to chatting and he told me he had played in college and now worked for a big company where his job was to take people out golfing. He very politely asked me if he could make a suggestion. "Sure," I said, "suggest away." He said that I should try to keep my left arm straight on the backswing. Okay. I put a ball down, set up and took the club back with a straight left arm. The ball shot from my clubhead on a high, rising arc straight down the middle. It had only taken me one swing to prove the efficacy of his tip. Of course, I still had a lot to learn, but that was, without question, the best tip I've ever gotten.

Hi Everything explained is correct IMHO. The three main things to take note off is: 1: the distance the lead shoulder travels (approx 6 inches) v the left wrist to IMPACT (approx 6 feet). So logics is that the left wrist must accelerate faster that the lead shoulder to both get to impact as explained. 2: the shoulders MUST stay CLOSED and QUIET until the lead arm is approx 45 deg down. DO not fire the upper body first. 3: The longer you hold off on the shot (EXCESSIVE FORCED LAG) will cause big problems. I think it’s time to go play.

Still the best full swing instruction on the platform. This part of the game is "solved" by Chuck imo. If only he knew the secrets of putting (like me😉) and could put up a similar quality of putting instruction to solve that too? Putting well is so easy once you realise it's a totally an instinct/feel thing and NOT an athletic/analytic thing. Your Grandma can put well with almost no athletic prowess. A mind empty of technical thinking is a must. You don't toss a piece of screwed up paper successfully into a waste bin by using a reductionist approach. Just a thought to put here at "the oracle" of golf instruction....

This is a very interesting detail about the left arm, it's a funny feeling to try and separate the two ways of rotating the arm. My mind wants to rotate the arm when I try to just rotate the wrist. Thanks for sharing another great video.

Hey Chuck….in this video you comment that you pull the left arm down. But in all (at least all I’ve seen), you say there is now conscious movement of the arms….they are moved but the weight shift, left hip rotation, and the post up. Can you please clarify. Thanks.

Just to be clear, rotation by the wrist itself is minimal (a few degrees only). The two types of rotation are at the elbow or the shoulder, right? So, the way I understand it is that we want to keep shoulder rotation at a minimum and control the clubface at the elbow.

kathleen smith you’ve clearly not given many lessons to high handicaps! I asked a student to throw a ball down at the ball sitting on the ground and he hit himself in the foot. Just because it’s natural for u don’t assume it’s natural for everyone! After 10k in person lessons I never assume anything is “natural” for anyone!

If your trying to lift the ball up (like Tiger's pic) then get the left shoulder up, but bad. Left should needs to be level to take a divot. Watch more than Tiger's swing. Especially on par threes. Tigers pic should have the driver in hand perhaps.

So - you rotate the entire left arm going back …. But only rotate the wrists on the way down ? Why not just rotate the club with wrists going back? What’s the point of rotating the entire arm on the backswing if you don’t “use” it in the downswing?
@Rotaryswing

Because the swing plane would be too upright
@cmsima
@cmsima 3 жыл бұрын
@@Rotaryswing Hmmm. I think I have a misunderstanding of what swing plane is. I’ve been equating shaft plane with swing plane. So I may be have been thinking I’m on the proper swing plane - when in actuality I’m swing too steeply. Thanks for the response.

enlightened why? What do you recommend?
@wespo74
@wespo74 4 жыл бұрын
@@sandylake304 because golf is not a 1 handed game. You can make a case for any swing theory and seemingly prove it with just 1 hand on the club. In this case he's demonstration left hand and arm rotation holding the club in his left hand. But as soon as the right hand is applied, and the swing speed is multiplied exponentially, left hand and left arm rotation changes dramatically. That part was "total nonsense". Sorry but Ican't comment on the entire video.
@sandylake304
@sandylake304 4 жыл бұрын
enlightened It’s helpful to me because previously opened the face strictly by rotating my wrist. I was not even aware of the importance of rotating the arm as well. It is now much easier for me to get in a better position at the top and letting me make a better transition to the downswing. Very helpful to me, and I’ve been playing for nearly 60 years!

Yes I agree about rotation on the backswing not getting in the correct position to deliver the clubhead.
