Also worth mentioning when choosing warm gear to use on bike is that it doesn't interfere with riding the bike, particularly in the neck area can be toasty warm buy unable to turn head at at junctions

The most important and simplest part of my kit to keep me warm, is a windproof neck warmer (eg. a Buff). I always have found that if your neck is warm and something is stopping the cold wind getting to it, then the rest of your body will feel the benefit.

Ah I happen to have a theory on this. Brown adipose tissue is burnt to produce body heat in neonates right? It's found in the neck. You keep an amount of it as an adult so...I think how warm or cold your neck is would affect how the rest of the body feels.

I have a full set of WARM N SAFE heated clothing , It’s the best investment I’ve ever made for motorcycling. I control my gloves independently to the rest of the kit, The socks are like putting your feet in a bowl of warm water… bliss It’s made riding in the cold pleasurable, I’ve had the gear over 8yrs now so a bargain really, and speaks volumes for Warm n Safe quality

When I hear about electric heated jackets and similar stuff plugged to bike's battery, I never about power consumption of those. I'd imagine that on a bike fitted with auxiliary lights, heated grips, charging gps or phone, you can't plug very much more. I'd love to see this matter addressed somewhere.

The wind speed on that chart is measured in KPH not MPH, so if you were travelling at 70mph you would be significantly colder than you mentioned in the video

I commute 200 miles per day all year round, entirely agree with everything in this video I’ve be riding for 30 years and have most of the kit this video covers, if you haven’t, a tip I learnt many years ago riding in winter - stop and buy a newspaper, get a warm drink in you, and when you set off again, wear the newspaper under your jacket covering your chest for a bit more insulation, riding cold is dangerous.

Just think years ago in the mid to late 70's I would wear all the old Grebo gear, ripped up oily originals, leather jacket, hobnail boots and any leather gloves or even fingerless gloves. An old stadium project 4 open Face helmet. In bad weather it would be newspapers under your jacket , polythene bags over your knees and boots, a black bag pulled over your jacket n holes in for your head n arms . Great memories though. Lol.

Thanks great info I am in So California so I am spoiled with the nice weather - but you are so right about being cold and not paying attention because all you can think about is how cold you are. That was such a good tip - warm weather gloves should be on the tight side, cold weather loose so you can have the air pockets, and Merino Wool is also really nice. Good tip to wear waterproof cloths for keeping the wind chill down. Thanks again - Denis Kerechuk.

Finally some videos answering my questions. I’m not looking for an ADV jacket but to stay warm in winter. And to be honest I have always been confused with the jacket choice. I’m riding a naked bike (SDR) because I find it fun and I may have to commute for 1,5 h on German motorways (this just to say that I may ride at high speed). As you rightly mentioned the enemy is being cold and wet. I have jackets for mid-season and for summer time. Same with boots and shoes. In the winter I have boots, heated grips and gloves (and you’re right the latest only work for a certain amount of time before my hands get cold) I have a rukka jacket but when the temperature is below 5C it gets uncomfortable pretty quickly. Hence my looking for a more efficient one. I’m not interested in a 4 seasons jacket with plenty of vents and pockets and I don’t know what else. Neither with waterproof liners I have to put over the jacket etc. Your videos just totally clarified what a true ADV jacket is made for (I don’t need those) and how to stay warm. The top end choice of Klim, Rukka etc. makes finally totally sense 😂 Many thanks for this! P.S. I didn’t mention the obvious which is protection as by now it should be obvious to everyone that we have only one body and we should protect it as much as possible

I got a heated jacket a couple of years ago and it's an absolute game-changer. I got an off-bike battery pack too and use it when I go to watch football in winter. Hands wise, heated grips and hand guards work fine for me. Another great video - lots of good advice there.

Great video - I wrap my levers in helicopter tape. Not only does it avoid me putting warm hands on freezing cold metal but I also get better grip especially in cold wet conditions

Very good video. :) As an all year round rider just a few more points. I am just 10min in so you may mention this in the video: Wind must never enter anywhere. If you pick a down jacket in your layering system - pick one with a hood. Put the hood on, then your helmet. The high collar of your jacket should be tight and seal that from wind on top. Open helmets with double-layered goggles are great to prevent fog under any conditions, better than any full helmet with pinlock. under the hood wear a waterproof Balaklava mask, which is stuffed into a sleeve scarf., and which has an outlet under your nostrils. Jacket length must exceed your bum and come to a tapered close to prevent wind from entering. High Motocross boots for the same reason. Stuff the trousers inside. Waterproof sealskin socks help. The best winter trouser in the world: Pinedwood Abisko 2.0. Did not find a jacket as sturdy and hardcore yet. Cheers.

Back in the early 80s I bought just about all my biking kit, bar my leather jacket, from an army surplus shop. Travelling from Portsmouth to Wales every weekend all year round provided me with a whole library of horror stories that I'm still boring people with today!

I use waterproof socks that come up to my knees to keep my feet/legs warm. You can also wear these with a liner sock for extra warmth.

I use a few different base layers depending on temperature. Halvarssons synthetic mesh, Halvarssons light Merino wool, Rukka Mark, Military surplus Outlast. Great stuff. I use EDZ and Halvarssons Merino socks. EDZ Merino boxers.

Just got a heated seat on new bike, feels like thats made a big difference. Interesting hearing comments about heated jacket, although so far merino layer and thermal liner seem to be doing the trick. I find that a puffy jacket compresses under my riding gear and looses most of its insulation ability once it’s compressed. That’s what I wear a electric jacket liner. It was a game changer for me.

Down is the most effective insulation BUT electric jacket is always going to be better. There is only so much that insulation can do. It is, after all, on trying to keep heat in, not producing any more heat.

It's never been easier and simpler to ride in the winter... Grab any 3-layered touring textile gear (even the cheap ones will do), dump the winter layer, keep the windstopper/rainproof layer, replace winter layer it with a merino and optionally with a technical underlayer. Get a winter balaclava and dedicated winter gloves (Dane, Rukka, etc). Winter socks and a heavy duty boot. Grab a pinlock visored helmet, if it has too much ventillation tape shut some of them. Make sure all the layers are on the looser side, air trapped there is the best insulator. No need for heated gear. Heated gear gets you into trouble when it malfunctions or runs out of power (been there, done that). Done. I'm riding all winter ever since I got my license.

Merino wool base layer (and mid) does it for me, summer and winter.... No thanks to stinky synthetics next to my skin. Growing up on a sheep farm, and having sheared a few sheep in my time perhaps I would say that..... but with more than 55 years of motorcycling and working outdoors year round, I have experience to boot. Synthetics do have a place.... as casing for a down jacket in winter, and unbeatable for rain gear.

+100 for the electric gear. On a long ride there is nothing better! Only i don't love electric gear for commuting short distances or where i want a "destination" jacket. in those cases the down jacket is my mid layer, but anything longer it's just a million times better. i think it's ironic how you chastize people about not trying electric gear but you have the same attitude about the hippo hands :P hippo hands + heated grips and you can wear summer gloves even down to freezing temperatures. still have great feel on the controls

My gran always said wear a nice wooly jumper to stay warm. Of course the best way to stay warm on a bike is to take it to the South of France. Or Spain. Greece is nice too. Buy the best gear, it's cheaper in the long run and it does the job MUCH better than cheap gear. When you're cold and wet and sliding down the road because you were too cold to move properly you will bitterly regret saving a few quid on gloves & clothing

I've been ridding for fourty five + years and i ride sometimes in - 15° c . Ive been doing this in wool shirt , jeans and leahers. its usually not your body that gets cold its you hands. So i think the most important thing is snowmobile gloves. I've trid many many moto gloves over the very and they for the most part are crap in cold weather. over 4- 5° c theyre ok because they do give you more movement but....

have 3 brands of heated gloves and as video says...battery does'nt last and too 40*at 60 kc mph hands still get cold... I ride yr round and winter is lower than 40...20 and lower when I ride.. heated help but only for 20 min or less..Have not found or tried heated inner gloves..

I agree. I do not feel cold on top my fist but on top of my fingers. Problem is that manufacturers do not ad extra milimeters longer fingers for winter gloves pattern. Why would I buy baggy gloves if I mostly need 5-8mm extra legnth in critical zone on the tip of my fingers? The one who changes gloves pattern for their winter gloves collection wil earn riders respect and money. Dual compartment winter gloves are not (always) those 2finger arctic gloves... or u have forgotten to explain 2in1 system, so I will be pleased to do it 😀 It is glove with thick insulated compartment as second glove inside (and over) same glove. If it is not very cold u use regular glove compartement. Really comfortable, warm winter glove with two sleeves inside the glove giving you the option for extra warmth if needed. A fantastic if paired with sympatex / gortex membrane to ride with on those cold days. The 2-in-1 system gives you complete flexibility in a waterproof and breathable glove. In summary, there's two compartments to choose from, one has far more thermal properties for near zero temperatures. I have excellent pair of VQUATTRO Advance 17 GTX 2-1. Tested in rides for down to 3'C. I have DANE Gore Infinum under glove. It is BS. I simply don't get what is hype about Infinum membrane becouse I do not feel any windproof. Maybe for running or hiking. Second, it is thick membrane so it fits under 1size bigger glove. I have tried a few other silk / merino under gloves but they have some seams over fingers that takes a lot of glove space and fit too snug inside outer glove. Real winner in gloves layering is "moisture wicking base glove", seamless base glove. It could be done in very thin high tech material (with merino % perhaps?) . It could work under any pair of leather gloves or winter gloves as a must have. If there is a such one to recommend , please put a product name or link in reply. Tnx.

I agree with the thin under glove, it’s the seam that makes them to tight, a seamless glove would be ideal.
