Great video, very informative. Tried Arai's over the years, but have never found them comfortable. Had a Foggy rep Shark gifted by the dealer when I bought a new 916 but sold it with the bike and grateful to do so. Apart from the Shark, I've always been a Shoei man and currently have an open face and a flip. The flip is 6 years old so due to be replaced, definitely by a Shoei, just haven't decided what yet. I've been wearing Shoei for the last 30 years or so because I find them the most comfortable but also because of the quality. Best all round lid in my opinion.

19:10 this is so true. Was at the local motorcycle gear chain recently and it was obvious that the 22-06 helmets were all rounder than their predecessor. It was especially noticeable with the HJCA RPHA 70 vs the new 71. It's like they completely changed ideas on the shell shape.

I am 62 years old and ride a sport touring motorcycle Yamaha FJR 1300. I ride it more like the easy relaxed touring on weekends and not like an aggressive sport rider. Today I tried on a Arai Signet X and loved the feel of the long oval shape, no forehead pain at all. I felt the medium to be a very snug and was told by the salesman they need to be that way. I don’t usually wear a large helmet but found it much more comfortable the wear. What are your thoughts on going to the large.

Great choice for first "big" motorcycle..... I am biased 😉😉. First "big" motorcycle was a secondhand NC750S (S for shortarse) because there isn't much choice for anyone with a 30" inside leg on adventure style motorcycle and I'm no racer/cruiser rider. Took it around the beautiful Emerald Isle and it's wonderful people plus several tobacco runs across the channel pre pandemic. Got the opportunity to part-ex for something new and fortunately Honda had dropped the seat height of their NC750X (just enough) - only downside was still the same hard seat (if your backside is still the same as the day you were born) and up until recently getting the addons (roll bars, top box mount etc) Love the 75mpg around town and north of 85mpg on long (non motorway) rides. Can't wait for this current "situation" to end (health issues prevent me taking risks others can) so I can tour some of Europe.

Another terrifically engaging video, and I'd possibly agree that Shoei usually come with some better features, but I think that what additionally matters here, and what this video probably needed, was more discussion of the types of shapes and sizes that Arai and Shoei do. Some of us are definitely Arai shaped heads over much of their range, whereas some of us are Shoei heads. That should be people's guiding consideration between these brands, for both comfort and safety.

Since I have a Shoei head I use Shoei. Love Arai helmets too. Arai was the first helmet I have tried on some 45 years ago, but it did not fit me. The Shoei RF whatever did. Today I use a GT Air 2 to great satisfaction, although I must say that I need the thicker XL 13 center pad for a perfect fit. Also I have never had a flip lid before, but as soon as the Neotec 3 becomes available here in the US I will buy one of those.

Have owned Arai's and Shoei's... well built, well finished but I don't subscribe to the view that they are necessarily any safer. I'm currently using a HJC RPHA 70, having previously owned an older RPHA version. It's a great helmet as far as I am concerned, comfortable, not especially noisy, inner visor which is essential in my opinion. and it was good value for money. My only gripe is that I can not wedge the visor open just a little, like the Arai has the visor latch - instead it always gets forced close by the wind, very annoying

Another fantastic video. I have genuinely lost count of the Motolegends videos I have watched recently. Chris is indeed extremely knowlegable and puts across all the information very well. The thing I like is they don't shy away from saying that some of the gear is expensive, but you get what you pay for. It is after watching these videos that I went out and bought: Rukka Nivala jacket and Trousers, Shoei Neotec 2, Daytona Roadstar Pro GTX and Rukka Mars 2 gloves. £3000 worth of gear. The only issue was that the store in Guildford is so far from home so I couldn't buy from there. I spoke to customer services, and of course I could have ordered online. I didn't want to buy the wrong size and cause aggravation for the store and myself returning wrong size items. I did buy a size larger than I originally thought I would in the Rukka Nivala suit, the helmet, and the boots!!! So just goes to show. However next year in the spring I will be looking for a summer leather jacket ( Helsons ? ) and jeans ( Rokker ?) and summer boots and gloves, so maybe a road trip to Guildford? Awesome...

I wore Arai for years and last year decided mine were getting a bit old so looked to buy a new Arai but they would not fit me correctly now so I looked and tried on several others and then tried on Shoei which I had before my Arai's and they were a revelation, quiet and a European head fit not rounded like the Arai's so bought a NXR , two months later I bought the GT air with drop down visor in their sale. Arai lost the sales due to them changing something that did not need changing to save them money, in europe the head shape is predominately oval unlike in the east were it is more rounded, so they decided they would save money and only have the more rounded fit and so losing customers who now found Arai did not fit anymore, at the store the salesman said they had lost Arai sales as they found customers who used to have Arai found, they like me, the helmet no longer fitted most who wanted quality had then bought Shoei instead.

Arai makes helmets in several different head shapes. They even make a helmet for long oval shaped heads that I'm told is common in northern europe. Their signet line of helmets is for this shape head. I have this head shape and I thank Arai every time I ride since this is the only helmet that fits my long oval head. I agree though they are not quiet so ear plugs are a must but ear plugs should be worn anyway so not a minus in my book.

So if Arai are so focussed on safety and won’t compromise please explain why they make an open face helmet? Seems to me your assertion falls off a cliff at this point!
@Motolegends
@Motolegends 3 жыл бұрын
Not really. A lot of people want to wear open-faces, and in certain parts of the world it’s just too hot to wear a full-face helmet. But if you want an open-face helmet, then you can be sure that Arai makes the safest one. Nobody wants to confront this prospect, but the reality is that the primary role of a helmet is to protect the rider from brain damage. And to that end it’s the back of the helmet that is important. Nobody wants to lose their chin or their nose, but if people want to take that risk, that’s personal choice. But if you want to give yourself the best possible chance of surviving a bang on the head even in an open-face helmet, you’d choose an Arai. I really can’t see how this negates any thing I have said about Arai making the safest helmets.
@UltimateDazzle
@UltimateDazzle 3 жыл бұрын
@@Motolegends really, Please explain how a company cannot make a system helmet because the rider may ride with it open or it may break due to an inherent weakness then make one where they take the front off, rather perverse logic. Plus I’m afraid I think my knowledge of facial anatomy is rather better than yours as a BDS LDS RCS I can assure you serious injury and death can certainly ensue from a frontal face injury, I have treated some horrific bicycle injuries happening at much lower speeds where riders were wearing regular cycle helmets with no frontal protection. Weight is important too because of the energy developed the strain placed on neck and head increases significantly with a higher weight on the head.

So what you are saying is if a rider thinks it's more important to have integrated coms than to protect his head from damage he should get a Shoei over an Arai. Personally I will stick with my super comfortable and safe Arai to which I have attached a Cardo in 5 minutes. But hey, that's just me talking ... No matter what helmet we wear, if we are going highway speeds without earplugs we'll all end up with tinnitus and reduced hearing.
@Motolegends
@Motolegends 3 жыл бұрын
No, emphatically I am not saying that. Arai and Shoei make the safest helmets on the market, and by a country mile, in our view. But Arais are somewhat uncompromising. They are big and heavy. They don’t come with drop-down sun visors that, in certain circumstances, can be life savers. Arais are noisy. Earplugs will help, but with or without earplugs a Shoei will be quieter, and for people commuting big miles every day the noise of an Arai can be unbearable. In terms of comms. an externally affixed comms. again creates noise in the way that an integrated one doesn’t. There’s another benefit to integrated comms.. They are safer. Your helmet won’t absorb energy in the same way if you’ve stuck a box on the side of the helmet and that area is impacted. This has been officially recognised in the latest 22-06 regulations, and it is why helmets with integrated comms. now have to be tested both with the system fitted and without it. So no, you misquote me. Everything is a trade off. In the margin, an Arai might just be a safer helmet, but in just about every other respect the equivalent Shoei will be a better helmet, easier to live with, less tiring, less harmful to your ears and when it comes to the visor and comms., potentially safer to ride in too. You choose the helmet you want, but your inference that any other choice is inferior is not justified. CP

If what you are suggesting is that what you have watched makes a good advertisement for wearing an Arai, then I would agree. But if you are suggesting that this video is merely an advertisement to help us sell more Arais, you would be wrong. As a company, we sell very few Arais. They are not core to us because they are simply too sporty. And so, we came to the conclusions we did despite the fact that there would be little in it for us. There are things we don’t like about Arais, but we do acknowledge that they make the safest helmets. CP

After the fiasco with the C4, even Schuberth wouldn’t claim they make the best helmets! We like Schuberth. @@MotolegendsWhat fiasco ? I did`t had any problem with my Schuberths. My C4 and my M1 Pro are doing pretty well. Both with Sena Communication units. And there is no company which helps customers like Schuberth does. No, for my opinion Schuberth remains the best.
@Motolegends

G 1 The C4 was a well-documented disaster. Within a year, they replaced it with the C4 Pro that incorporated over 15 different fixes to the original helmet. We don’t put messages out there based on a sample of one. We sold many hundreds of of C4s, and had many, many hundreds of complaints. Schuberth has had huge problems since they moved from West Germany to East Germany, taking absolutely none of their experienced staff with them. I don’t want to sound rude, but your having an opinion based on your personal experience is understandable. But to baldly state on the internet that Schuberth helmet are the ‘best’ purely because you have not had any problems with the two you have is not particularly meaningful. You saying that you have not had a problem with yours certainly is. CP

There is a difference between being sponsored and selling yourself out. Yes Rossi is sponsored by AGV. Yes he probably gets paid more for than any other rider was, is, or will ever be for a helmet deal. But would he wear a substandard helmet and risk his life for money ? I really don’t think so and frankly you too are in no position to cast such an aspersion. The RX-7V / RX-7X / X-14 as well the Pista GP RR meet the FIM standards and that is all the knowledge anyone apart from those involved directly in helmet manufacturing, have. Yes Arai and Shoei are regarded as the safest, but there is no metric to say that the GP-RR is not as safe if not safer and definitely no basis to say that the lid specifically used by Rossi is not as safe as the ones used by other riders. And here you are trying to malign one of the biggest icons of this generation, when you have zero technical information or proof to back up your claim.
@Motolegends
@Motolegends 3 жыл бұрын
I am not saying his helmet is substandard. What I said was that you should not choose your helmet based on who wears it on the track. Rossi’s race helmet is certainly up to scratch, I am sure, but AGV is a very much a budget brand, and the point I was making was that choosing your helmet just because someone like Valentino is wearing it would be unwise. Valentino is AGV’s key marketing platform; and he is a goldmine, but their road helmets are quite ordinary, and not in the same league as a Shoei or an Arai. And so my point was a simple one. Don’t buy the marketing; buy the helmet. You are looking for any argument where there are no grounds for one. But did Valentino choose AGV because he thought it was the safest or best helmet? Probably not.
@JrChhabra
@JrChhabra 3 жыл бұрын
@@Motolegends ‘Was he wearing an AGV because they offered him a huge check’ that is what your exact words were. First you say - Rossi’s helmet is up to scratch, then you say ‘did Valentino choose AGV because he thought it was the best or safest helmet’ That is what my point is. Money may be part of the equation but he did he settle for something sub-standard ? U yourself have agreed that his helmet is up to scratch. I am not an AGV fanboy however the fact that they can produce a helmet worth of MotoGP does mean something and like all businesses technology gets passed down to the cheaper product lines. And if someone thinks they are buying a ‘Rossi helmet’ when they buy a K3-SV, they are just dumb. Just like buying a BMW M330i and likening it to an M3. I totally understand and agree with the ‘dont buy the marketing, buy the helmet’, and in that respect I never said an AGV is as good as an Arai or a Shoei (barring the top of the line products). To cut it short - Yes he wears an AGV becuase they offered him a huge check, but not without the company providing him a helmet that is on par with the other brands like Shoei / Arai. That is my only gripe with the way you presented that line. It comes across that it is your opinion that he wears an AGV ONLY AND ONLY becuase he got money which is not giving the man and the company their due. Cheers
@Motolegends
@Motolegends 3 жыл бұрын
I am not sure that there is any contradiction here. Did he initially sign with AGV because he thought he would be wearing the safest helmet? Categorically no. He has been quoted as saying that he chose AGV because he wanted to ride in an Italian helmet. Is the helmet he rode in, in recent years, up to scratch? Absolutely yes. Was the amount this Italian brand was willing to pay him a factor? One imagines it might have been. In terms of passing technology down the line from Moto GP, then yes I believe this fully of an Arai or a Shoei, but AGV specialises in budget helmets, and these helmets derive very little, in terms of safety, from Moto GP other than shape and graphics. Remember, before you get too carried away with your line of thinking, that Simoncelli was wearing an AGV that came off because the strap broke loose from the shell. It was, to a large extent, that accident that drove the FIM to create a new standard. Before these new rules, Moto GP helmets were merely shaped by 22-05.

Maybe I’m missing the point but I bought an AGV K5 fully Italian flagged up to match a Ducati I had at the time on,y to find it was made in China. The flip down visor broke twice within a year and looking at the cheap mechanism I can see why. I didn’t bother getting it repaired again. Currently have a Shoei RYD with photochromic lens as no drop down sun visor and a Shoei Hornet ADV with photochromic and visor for low sun issues. Replaced a GT Air. For me Shoei are a great brand/fit/quality even though at the top end price wise. I think AGV are owned by Dainese so not even a brand in its own right, so won’t be same standard as firm specialising in just helmets.

Do you know why AGV Pista GP-RR replaced Pista GP-R? The answer is to meet the new FIM Standard. Are Arai RX-7X/V and Shoei X14/XSpirit3 being replaced by a new model to meet FIM standard? The answer is NO. Arai and Shoei didn’t have to replace their top of the line model to meet new regulations. AGV did make a new model, however. That pretty much explains Arai and Shoei are already make a helmets beyond safety regulations AFAIK, Arai never sponsored their riders. Arai never pay their riders to wear their helmets. Riders have to buy arai helmets themselves . Arai only provides service and maintenance. I believe that’s the reason Cal Crutchlow switched to HJC.

Rubbish. At 19:28 "you will not find a flip lid Arai helmet". So you cannot but the Arai SZ-R then???? An Arai CT-F???? Not flip sure....they're actually open face!!! For pure safety that's "worse" than a flip/modular helmet . Complete codswallop. Load of complete rubbish.

I think you’ve answered your own question, and have managed to make yourself look a little foolish at the same time. There is no Arai flip-lid. The helmets you refer to are open-face helmets, and we all know that Arai makes open-face helmets. In fact, we sell them. So my comment was 100% accurate. Sometimes best, I find, to stay away from the keyboard when you really have nothing of value to say!
