HOW TO KEEP YOUR HORSE STRAIGHT FOR BEGINNERS | GoPro Riding Lesson | UK Equestrian KZbinr
Join me and Ted in our first horse riding lesson together at 7am before work (riding English). In this lesson, we focused on how to improve Ted the horse's straightness, using minimal equipment in the school. I've shared the lesson plan with notes below so that you can follow along with the clips/voiceover and try this out on your own horse. Let me know in the comments if you have any additional questions. MASSIVE shout out to my riding instructor, Sarah Hartley (Surrey-based, UK) for teaching me.

WARM UP (Not Shown)
- 5 to 10 minute walk
- 5 minute trot
Focuses:
- A balanced walk and trot where the speed stays the same
- Make sure the horse is listening to your aids and moving off your leg, use transitions and changes of direction to get them listening.
PART A: RIDING RECTANGLES
1:33 Watch the exercise
2:04 The exercise explained (GoPro + Commentary)
Focuses:
- Start the exercise first in walk before moving on to trot
- Use your outside leg and outside hand to guide the horse around each block
- Keep your leg back and your heels balanced
- Look and move your body in the direction you want to go
- Keep a contact in the reins, but do not hold on too tightly - use your seat to move the horse
- Make sure your horse isn't drifting to the track on the long sides - keep him straight
PART B: ADDING TRANSITIONS
2:38 Watch the exercise
Focuses:
- When performing transitions, make sure you don't 'wiggle' when changing speed. Keep your horse straight
- Keep your contact but don't hold too tightly, you are aiming for self carriage
- When slowing down: squeeze with your thigh, abs, glutes and half-halt
- When speeding up: use your leg to squeeze them into trot
- Watch your diagonals! In trot, you should be sitting as the outside leg comes back
PART C: WORKING LARGE
3:20 Watch the exercise
3:44 The exercise explained (GoPro + Commentary)
Focuses:
- Work just inside the track - not on the track
- Horses are more likely to drift in this space - either onto the track or into the middle of the school. Keep them straight!
Good luck! Let me know how you do in the comments.
