In this video, I’m answering a question sent in by a tired mom on our Facebook Live Q&A Call. I hope you enjoy it.
I would say that unless your toddler is climbing out of the crib every day and it’s a safety risk, then don’t take him out of the crib.
If your child isn't a climber, leave them in the crib as long as possible. Until at least age 3! You will save yourself and your toddler so many struggles!
Step 1: Communicate your expectations
The first thing I recommend when you have a toddler is to communicate your expectations every day. Keep it short, upbeat and happy.
Say, ‘You’re such a big girl! I’m so proud of you! Tonight, you’re going to sleep in your bed. When you wake up in the night, Mommy’s going to come and give you a kiss, and then you’re going to go back to sleep cuddling your favourite teddy.”
Step 2: Choose your preferred sleep training method, suitable for your child.
Then you’re going to have to choose a method that’s going to help her fall asleep at bedtime relatively quickly, without getting out of bed and running all around.
There are so many different ways you could do this. You could do a super quick method. You could do a long, drawn-out method. It really depends on a lot of different factors.
Here's an example of one you can do that works relatively quickly. It’s nice because you get to stay in the room with your little one.
I would just say to her, “I’m going to stay in the bedroom with you tonight until you fall asleep. I’m going to be right here with you.”
I would get a chair and put it right up next to the bed and sit next to it while she falls asleep. Do your normal bedtime routine. Then turn off the lights, give her a kiss and sit next to the bed super quietly. Just say, “I’m going to sit here until you fall asleep”.
If she hops out of bed and starts running around the room, or starts sitting on your lap, say, “Mom’s going to have to go for a few minutes unless you can get into your bed”.
You’re going to encourage her to get back into her bed and then you’re going to go quiet again. You’re going to have her stay in her bed until she falls asleep. Then you can leave her room. I would sit next to her bedside for about 2 nights.
On Night 3, I would move my chair a few feet away. I would sit there and I would explain to her, “I’m just moving a little bit away, but I’m still going to stay here until you fall asleep.”
I would do that for 2 more nights.
On Night 5, I’d put my chair right inside the doorway.
Night 7: Move chair to the hallway for 2 nights.
Night 9: Pop in and out of the room. When you say you’re going to be 2 minutes, always go back. Always keep your word. Pop your head round the door and if your child’s awake, just say “I love you. I’m just going to go talk to Daddy”, and blow him a kiss.
After a few times of this, your child will probably be asleep. You can continue to do this for several days until your child gets more and more comfortable falling asleep on their own.
Night Wakings
You’re going to do the same thing when they wake up in the night. Just walk her right back to her bedroom. Sit in the chair until she falls asleep.
You can put a baby gate at her bedroom door. That will limit your child’s ability to roam around the house. You’ll hear her in the night, you just go to her and put her back in her bed.
Come up with a phrase that you use over and over and over again to remind her that it’s time to sleep. You could say, “It’s time to sleep”, or “Goodnight”.
Naps
I would just do the same thing at nap time. I would say, “I’m going to sit in this chair until you fall asleep”.
The more consistent you are, the quicker she will comply.

Good video.. I too am at the transition stage. My little man is going to turn 2 next month but he has already mastered the art of the crib climb out so I built his toddler bed and we are on night 2. I already adapted the calm/soothing/brief technique from crib routine to toddler bed routine but Added the quick sit n back scratch method til he falls asleep then I walk out quietly. Hasn’t failed me yet. The reassuring phrase of “I love you buddy, it’s time to go to sleep” is the go to for him to know it’s all good.

I have been watching the "toddler" playlist and haven't found anything that caters to my daughter, she just turned 2 and a 6 weeks ago she was falling asleep on her own perfectly. 4 weeks ago we left our home due to a wildfire and lost everything. From going hotel hoping and my parents only place she could sleep was in the bed with myself laying next to her. We moved into a new house 1 week ago and still needing to sleep with her, once shes asleep I can sneak out but within a hour she is back up screaming. Ive tried everything...

Hello and thank you for your post! I am so sorry to hear about your home. That is truly devastating. It sounds like your LO just has to get back into a routine, which can definitely be done! Check out these resources for helpful tips! You can also try to put a chair next to her crib instead of sleeping next to her and then gradually move the chair away from the crib each night until you are out the door. Is she still in a crib? New follow here! Finding your videos very helpful. My son turns 2 next week but he is struggling with his cot. Most nights he wakes up from hitting his head on the side or getting his feet stuck in the gaps (very stuck, it takes me twisting and turning to get him out) and I can only get him back to sleep with a bottle. I have tried putting bumpers up but he just pulls them off. Would you still recommend leaving him in the cot until 3 years? If so, how can I stop him from hurting himself? Thank you!

Hi, check out Vertical Crib Liners (on Amazon.) They "soften up" the crib and your little guy shouldn't be able to take them off. Yes, I believe you should leave your toddler in the crib as long as possible. Until he's jumping out and it's a safety risk! I hope this helps.

Hello Edith, We are glad you are enjoying the tips! It is SO hard to see our LO's cry. It really pulls on our Mama heart strings. It sounds like your LO is using you as a support system to fall asleep. The great news is that your LO is the perfect age to fall asleep independently (in her own bed by herself)! When she learns this skill, then you will see she is capable of sleeping 11-12 hours straight at night. She will get the sleep she needs to handle her busy little toddler brain (and those big emotions), and you will get the break and rest you need too! I really recommend looking in our Big Kid toddler program! This program will walk you step by step to teaching your little one "how" to fall asleep independently. There are several steps that need to be done to really build that solid sleep foundation. We help hundreds of families every month and really hope we get the chance to support your family too! If I stay with my 20 month old toddler in his room he won't even try sleeping hes just want to play. So I sit on the chair and and a few minutes I leave the room. He cries for 30 seconds and he's out. I think it's because I keep to our routine so by the time he needs to sleep he's already tired.

Hi Jilly My 2 year old goes to daycare and they nap from 12h-15h (we live in Hungary) I think it’s too much nap for him so we are struggling to put him to sleep in the evening. Unfortunately there is no way to change his nap time as this is how it works in the daycares in Hungary. We would like him to sleep from 8pm but it always take an hour for him to fall asleep. So we moved his bed time by 30 mins hoping for him to fall asleep by 9pm but it still takes 1 hour for him :( We are doing the camping out method and we are near the door but we are kinda stuck there. He screams non stop if we try to leave his room. He does not stop screaming I am not sure what to do anymore. He also wakes up every night screaming and he only calms down if I am right next to him so he can touch my hands feel that I’m there. I can’t just go and sit at the door because he doesn’t stop screaming. Please help I’m not sure what else to do.

My son is 2 and we still assist him in falling asleep... he wakes up an hour after we put him in his bed then he wakes up 30 to an hour later freaking out that were not there. Do you think the vhair method would address both falling asleep independently and encouraging him to fall back asleep on his own when he wakes an hour after using the chair method or should I hang about for an hour so he still sees me when he wakes again? Advice is sooo appreciated!!!

My toddler is about to turn 3 and we have a routine of her falling asleep next to me while I nurse my 5 month old and then I will put them in their own bed. I think she knows she is being transferred to her own bed but she will be fine and continue to sleep.... until some random time of the night she'll wake up and call my name (we do sleep in the same room) and I have made a bad habit of just getting her and putting her in bed with us because she just falls right asleep. What surprises me though, is that she does not choose to climb out to come in bed with us she just calls my name. I want her to stay in her own bed all night, can you please help!

My 2.5 year old jumps out of the crib for 1-2 hours every night. She will not sleep in the toddler bed though. When she jumps out she knocks on her door and opens it. I then go to her and firmly yet still caring tells her that it is bedtime. I put her in bed, tugs her in and say good night and leaves. This little routine continues as mentioned for 1-2 hours. I cannot do what you suggest as I have a 5 month old that needs me at the same time for nursing and helping him fall asleep. I am a single mom so I do not have the help of a partner. What would your advice be for me?
@Babysleepmadesimple
@Babysleepmadesimple 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there mama! Sorry to hear that you're struggling and you have to handle this alone. We recommend limiting nap to 1.5 hours at this age. Shorter nap can help toddlers be more tired at bedtime and fall asleep easier. If you can't sit in the room with your toddler, that's ok. Keep doing just as you are- firmly and lovingly walking her back and letting her know it's time to sleep. You can add in a "treat" in the morning if she closes her eyes and goes to sleep now. (A lollipop or video, for example.) Also, make sure bedtime is 5 hours after waking from nap. That's the "magic spot" for helping toddlers fall asleep easily. Not too long, not too short! And please check out our 2 year old sleep guide here --> www.babysleepmadesimple.com/2-year-old-sleep-problems-solutions. It's filled with tips to help your little one sleep better day & night. Out of curiosity, why is a crib so important until 3-4? My 1.5 year old has been in a normal single bed for about 3 weeks now. He's always been a terrible sleeper, still breastfed and until recently mainly co sleeping. We tried him in a Moses basket, crib, toddler bed and he would literally scream for hours until he was with me which is how we ended up co sleeping. But since he has a normal single bed he's in his own room, on his own and only wakes 2 -3 times a night rather than hourly like while he was co sleeping. I won't be changing if it works for us I'm just curious x
@Babysleepmadesimple
@Babysleepmadesimple 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ellie, That's great that your toddler has responded well to a single bed. The reason why we prefer the crib until at least 3 years is because it keeps your baby safely contained while parents are sleeping. Unsupervised babies & toddlers can get into dangerous situations playing in their room unattended or roaming the house. It's for safety reasons. So if toddlers aren't yet climbing out of the crib, we recommend keeping them in the crib until they're of an age where they can understand that they need to stay in it all night (usually around the third birthday.)

@@Babysleepmadesimple thank you! That makes sense! Makes me feel better about the bed too, as although he never managed to climb out of his crib he is most definitely a climber! Hi, that's very strong of you! Wow! It's very difficult to keep an 18 month old in a toddler bed all night, and it can also be unsafe since they're way too young to understand that they need to stay in bed. We really want to keep babies in their crib until the age of 3 years old, minimum. Is there any way you & your parents could get your sister back to sleeping in a crib? Due to circumstances we have to sleep in the same room with toddler and he gets in our bed every night and refuse to sleep. How to stop this?

Hello! Can you install a curtain in your room to separate the space a little bit? This can really help your LO feel like he has his own space. Also, check out this resource for helpful tips! www.babysleepmadesimple.com/toddler-getting-out-of-bed-repeatedly-2 Best, Alyssa, BSMS Support Team

My son is 19 months and I just got him potty trained. During the night he will take his diaper off when he goes potty and potty all in his crib. Do you still recommend keeping him in a crib or start working on a toddler bed so he can potty at night?
@Babysleepmadesimple
@Babysleepmadesimple 2 жыл бұрын
I DEFINITELY wouldn't transition him to a toddler bed. It's way too early! For now, have him wear an overnight diaper and a sleep sack so he can't remove it on his own. You can put the sleep sack on backwards if he's able to unzip it. It's ok to potty train during day and keep diaper at night for now since he's so young! Here's a blogpost to our favorite sleep sacks: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/best-baby-toddler-sleep-sacks/ Artemis, BSMS Support Team

Hi! Thanks for a helpful video. My son is not quite 3 yet, but he started climbing out of the crib each time, so we had to remove the 3 bars of the side of his crib. Now he uses his whole power to get out of the bed - so we sit next to his bed cutting off all the escape ways. But as soon as we move one meter from his bed, he jumps out, runs to play or escape the room. The camping out method seems inapplicable for us. What else can we try?

Hi! You will want to use one of the sleep training methods for the beginning of the night to make sure your LO falls asleep independently. How about the strategy of giving the toddler a teddy bear to hug?
@Babysleepmadesimple
@Babysleepmadesimple 4 жыл бұрын
Yes you try a lovey if it works for your little one. Loveys are known as “transitional objects” because they help children transition from dependence to independence over the first few years of life. Panagiota, BSMS Support Team

Hey, can I apply this to my 18month old? Recently I’ve been tapping her to sleep and singing to her, she cannot fall asleep otherwise. She starts to cry hysterically if I just sit there and give her minimal contact. Thanks

@@Babysleepmadesimple thanks for the reply. I’m on day 5, my toddler was crying hysterically. Maybe she had an extinction burst. If that’s the case, should I hold her to comfort her as every time I put her in the crib she keeps crying. Thank you

Sounds like a stupid idea! what if you go to father that’s exhausted from working all day he’s not gonna sit there in a chair for hours waiting for the kid to fall asleep!

This idea has worked for thousands of families! A few nights of (inconvenience) for parents can set up families for years of amazing sleep! While this is one idea, we have other methods that may work better for other families. Every family is unique! We often recommend families do any sleep training when over a weekend or when a family member has a few days off from work. I remember how exhausting it was when my LO's weren't sleeping well. My husband and I just teamed up, and within 6 days, they were sleeping amazingly. It has been almost 5 years now and we still have little champion sleepers. We would love to support your family too!
