So happy you posted this video! Five years later and it's still very relevant. Just did this job today on a 2011 Kia Soul. Went pretty much the same as the video. I found that leveraging some downward force on the vertical bolt while applying my impact driver made it come out quite readily. Thanks again for saving me hundreds of dollars! Subscribed.

I know it's 5 years later, but I just tackled this job on a jack-stand as well. Your video helped tremendously. No issues with my bolts living down south, but getting the knuckle to separate was my biggest issue to get the ball joint back in. Thank you so much for the video.

Ouch .. be careful . The inner bolt requires some fiddling
@ppgprops2 жыл бұрын
After wrestling with it for a while, I decided to start with the wonky inner bolt, then the ball joint. With a jack under the ball joint, the forward bushing and ball joint stud easily slid into place. The other side took about 75% less effort and time. Thanks again!

Quick question, when ordering from rock auto for the passenger side control arm, do I choose Left or Right, not sure if it’s asking from looking at the car head on or from the driver seat, thanks in advance !!!
@fupabox Жыл бұрын
Sorry I missed this question when posted . Think of American driver side of car is left . British drivers side is right . So in USA passenger side is right . It is always when viewing from inside the car looking forward .

2007 Accent - got it for free drove it for almost 3 years now has 217,000km. Right lower control arm bushings are totally shot and ball joint. + left bearings are toasts and right bearing is starting to become toasted. Quoted me 1700 to do that. I'm gonna do it myself for $520 (I got the whole bearing hub assembly with the knuckle so I don't have to swear over not having a press, but it sure cost more).
@fupabox2 жыл бұрын
yeah pressing is cheaper , but a much bigger pain in the butt, most garages won't even press out an old bearing ..they just replace the knuckle .. The whole lower arm is the way to go ..all the new bushings and ball joints already attached .

Great video. Helped a lot! I just finished doing mine. Worst part on mine was removing the bolt on the steering knuckle. I removed the nut first, then tried to spin the bolt... the head would turn, but the threads didn't budge. I didn't want to shear the head off, so heated the hell out of everything and hammered from the back side. Took some convincing, but it did eventually come out. Also, I couldn't get my torque wrench on the front bolt, so I had to jack up the motor/tranny a bit for some clearance (mine's an Auto).

Hi great video and solid explanation. Question the bolt in the middle of the arm is the nut welded inside the steel case? Many thanks for the video.

My 2011 Kia Soul 2.0 front bushing bolt is so close to the AT pan that I can't get a socket and breaker bar on it. This guy has a ton of room, must be a manual transmission? I have a weird noise "thudding " in the left front. Everything seems tight?

Thanks for the video! I'm tackling my suspension this weekend. I have replacement ball joints, sway-bar links, sway-bar bushings, and tie rod ends. My front suspension is in pretty bad shape. My 2011 Soul+ has 115k miles (185k km) on it. I'm REALLY hoping my lower control arm bushings are in good shape. I'm glad to see yours ended up being in good shape with more miles. So is there no upper ball joint on these cars? From what it looks like, the lower half of the strut rotates with the knuckle? Am I right?

I'm at 80k miles in my 2014 Kia Soul and the front left control arm is shot. Have done pads twice and rear rotors once because there was some wobble. Not sure how you have so many miles with no issues!
@fupabox4 жыл бұрын
Was Gfs car , 95% smooth highway use , and the control arms were completely shot when she decided the noise was bad enough to tell me about . I'm sure they were gone for quite some time . Still a very robust little car all in all . Only went through front pads rotors . rear pads rotors, lower control arms , clutch and alternator when we finally sold and bought a 2019 soul. Had 400k km on it when sold (other than normal maint. and timing belts )

I have a Kia Rio 2005 bought with 289K on the clock and runs great but also needs new control arms. Do you check shocks as well?
@fupabox5 жыл бұрын
you can do the bounce test on the front end by pushing down on each side ,get it rocking then let go . if it keeps springing up and down the shocks are toasty , if it stops pretty quick they are ok . Also check for leaks . At 300k they are pretty close to needing replacing for most cars

I have a 2013 accent gls. Hit a curve with the driver wheel. Took it to alignment and still pulls heavy to the right. Can it be a damaged driver side control arm? Any thoughts?
@fupabox5 жыл бұрын
yes it could be .. The alignment shop should have checked all suspension components before doing the alignment . it could be a bent strut , also a sticking brake on that side will cause it to pull
@dustybeers5 жыл бұрын
Hello, did you have to do anything special with the strut before disconnecting the control arm?
@fupabox5 жыл бұрын
sorry I missed this comment ... nope just disconnect . the strut will hold itself up

My car is needing control arm I think when I hit the breaks it makes the transmission and axel move forward a bit?
@fupabox4 жыл бұрын
possibly an engine mount can cause this as well . If you get someone to drive the car slowly in forward and reverse while you watch the front wheel from each side . When they hit the brake fairly hard you can see if the wheel moves forward or back (lower control are bushings) if not check the engine for excess movement back and forth

Once the other 17mm bolt and the ball joint was off the bolt came right out . You got the nut off the top of the bolt I'm assuming . Weird . Have you tried a pry bar behind the control arm to give some leverage ?

Stop buying online parts... after shipping the only benefit left many of the time is just a few bucks saving....but there's that "gotta wait some days" to begin job.... Support brick & mortar stores (smaller ones the better) ...."they're actively implementing the infrastructure to roll out automated vehicles.... what immediately follows is the freedom theft of private vehicle ownership & your ability to travel when & where you want without permission. If you find this absurd, YOU are the one not in the know..."yet"
@fupabox3 жыл бұрын
I totally agree to a point . I agree that the idea of unmanned trucking is wrong ..just because we can doesn't mean we should do it . Automated delivery of auto parts will eliminate customers who do their own repairs . The people who do their own repairs are millions of people who drive for a living . Someone making 200k per year and leasing a new car will never be the customer for auto parts. In my case parts are almost 3x more expensive in Canada than I can get from Rockauto . I use brick and morter for everything else when possible . I'm in an auto parts store at least 5x a week . Self drivingf vehicles are bad news ..anyone who believes their self driving vehicle can't ,at some time ,be told to NOT take you somewhere you want to go, isn't paying attention.

@fupabox7 жыл бұрын
get a prybar or screwdriver into the split in the pinch mount and get it pried apart
@Snowdog2167 жыл бұрын
Try some PB Blaster on the top then rap the area with a small hammer or tire iron about 30 times. You are trying to create some vibration so the fluid soaks in and the rust bond area breaks loose. Or get a pickle fork. Autozone and other parts store rent them for a refundable deposit, ie free. You would put the pickle fork in between ball joint and connection, then with a 3-5 pound hammer drive the fork in. I'm sure you got it worked out by now, but good info for anyone else doing this job. Great comment about jacking up the tire to normal level, before tightening anything down. Keep the car on the jack stands, but put in an extra jack stand as a back up. If you don't then the bushing will tear out very quickly. I have also heard this called "Curb Height" , meaning the position if the wheel as if the car was just parked.

soak it in penetrating fluid overnight .. a length of pipe over the end of your wrench will give you much more leverage to unbolt it
