Kill your weeds and not your lawn. I will teach you step by step how to mix herbicides that will kill weeds and not your st.augustine, zoysia, or bermuda grass.
TIMESTAMP: mixing rates start at 14:00 minutes!!!

Products
Avenue south (summer) mix rate 1.1 to 1.8fl oz per 1,000sqft
Celsius WG (spring, fall, winter) oz per 1k .057 to .113.
Dismiss nxt (for sedge weeds year around) fl oz per 1k .234 to .350 fl oz dismiss has its own squeeze and pour. The 3 lines are the 3 rates low,medium,high per 1k or 1 gallon out of backpack.
MSM .025 to .05 oz per 1,000 use low rate when mixing with avenue south.
Non ionic Surfactant .25 fl oz per 1k
Blue dye a small splash.
HOW TO FIGURE SPRAY RATES BY FL/OZ
Take fl/oz per 1,000 sqft
Divide by the number of gallons per minute
Then times by the total amount of gallons you are mixing into
Example: a product need to be applied at 2.5 oz per 1,000sqft, we are spraying at 3 gallons per 1,000sqft which is the same as per minute when bulk spraying. We have a total of 10 gallons to mix.
We would do
2.5 divide by 3 that equals 0.8333 then we take 0.8333 times it by 10 and we get 8.333.
So we would use 8.3 fl/oz of that product into 10 gallons of water.
Tip: if you found out your gallons per minute of your sprayer you can know how much water you need to treat your lawn. You should be spraying 1,000sqft in 1 minute at a normal walking pace. So if your lawn is 5,000 sqft and you are spraying at 2 gallons per minute. You would 2 the gallons per minute times 5 the sqft of your lawn. We get 10. So you will need 10 gallons of water to mix into to treat your 5,000sqft lawn at 2 gallons per minute.
Tip: you can find out your GPM (gallons per minute) fill your sprayer with water. Get a bucket and mark 1,2,3,4,5 gallons on it. Spray into the bucket and time 1 minute to see how full the bucket got in those 60 seconds. Adjust and keep going tell you get desired GPM.
With this information you can now read the label and mix any liquid product into how ever much water knowing you are using the right amount and will not burn your lawn.

Most lawn care videos on KZbin bundle all St Augustine grasses together when it comes to weed killers. They should realize that products which may be safe for some St Augustine grasses can be deadly for others like Floratam. Floratam is one of the most popular (maybe the most), grasses in Florida. It is also popular in other parts of the southeast and Texas. When talking about St. Augustine grass, KZbinrs should specifically state if what they are talking about also applies to Floratam. I only mention it because it is hard to find weed killer that is safe for Floratam.

I always recommend checking the label. Because most homeworners don't what grass they have. Everything I recommend is safe for floratam. Because we use these products on hundreds of different lawns, we have used one safes for all different types. These products are safe for all types of St.augustine. I should have brought that up in the video.

Chad, how should I attack a weed infestation in my St Augustine when at the same time I'm also dealing with advanced gray leaf spot and a thin/weak unfertilized lawn? I started with the fungicide which I'm planning to do 3 rounds of different groups two weeks apart. Can I apply the post emergent in the middle of these treatments, or should I wait until finished with the fungus? I'm concerned that I can damage the grass doing the post-emergent if it is already stressed due to the fungicide. My plan is to apply the fertilizer 10-0-20 after completion of dealing with the fungus and the weeds to avoid feeding them. Can you provide me with your advice about my situation and sequence of application, please?

I used the Image Nutsedge killer form Lowes in the spray handle type (not concentrate) and Id say its mixed result on how effective it is depending on how bad the infestation is. The biggest drawback Ive noticed with Image is that even in the spring temps it seems to stunt the growth quite a bit, at least in my lawn (yes I made sure I didnt over-apply, measured and was spot on). I gave Sedgehammer a try in a different area (since this season Ive had a explosion of sedge), and while it may work a little slower it has done a much better job than Image and didnt seem to stunt the lawn near as much. Ill have to see if dismiss is any better, but I was happy with the results of Sedgehammer. Is sedge something that just exists or is there something that promotes it that I may be doing unknowingly?
@bettercallchadd
@bettercallchadd Жыл бұрын
We used to use sledgehammer before dismiss NXT. I would dismiss nxt is better and probably the best sedge killer for our grasses on the market. Sedge is a water weed. Loves wet areas. So areas that moisture sits you are very likely to have sedge. It's almost impossible to fully get rid of in wet areas.
@xr1supra85ba
@xr1supra85ba Жыл бұрын
@@bettercallchadd so am I watering too much then? Also idk about dismiss NXT, looked it up on domyown and they wanted $730 for a 60oz bottle and $156 for a 10oz bottle vs them selling a hammersedge, surfactant, and dye kit for $100.
@bettercallchadd
@bettercallchadd Жыл бұрын
@xr1supra85ba you could be. Low lying areas, shady areas, compacted soil, poor drainage can all be a cause as well. If that's works best for you I would stick with that. Sledgehammer is still a great product.

Thanks for yet another great video. I am particularly interested in knowing when to apply. I understand about what seasons during the year to apply the products but would like to know more about when to apply if rain is a factor 1-2 days before or after application (or even the day of application) or if the sprinkler system is to water the day you apply the herbicides, etc. I never know if applying at the wrong time would make the application of the products ineffective because of these rain and watering factors. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
@bettercallchadd
@bettercallchadd 11 ай бұрын
Every product will have their own instructions about that on the label. But a good rule of thumb is that they will need at least an hour to dry. But if heavy rain is expected that day, I wouldn't apply. A light to medium rain after it drys will be ok!!

Celsius w/Certainty is at least in my experience very hard on St Augustine. It's also very effective on weeds (including sedges) which explains it's popularity. I try and reserve it for spot treating areas and go with a low mix rate of the Certainty part. I've determined it's primarily the Certainty in the mixture that causes the stunting and chlorosis because when I use Celsius alone it does not cause nearly as much significant yellowing and stunted growth. If you need to zone spray the entire st aug lawn I'd stick with Celsius alone and if you also have sedges just add some Sedgehammer into the mix or just treat the sedge areas separately with Sedgehammer.

First of all, thank you for the video. You mention that your sprayer will empty the whole gallon in one minute. It took me 5 minutes to completely empty 1 gallon of water. I was not able to adjust it to go any faster. Does this mean I can get 5000 square feet out of my 1-gallon sprayer? If this is correct and the amount of product needed is based on 1000 square feet, then I just need to multiply the amounts by 5 (if I plan on mixing with the whole gallon), correct?
@haroldmoore3082
@haroldmoore3082 4 ай бұрын
I measure out 1,000 square feet in my driveway. Then I spray it with water to determine my application rate, based on my walking speed and the equipment I am using. I have found that I typically use 1.333 gallons to cover 1,000 feet. Calibrating your equipment like this is the most effective way of determining coverage rates. Over time the rates will change based on the condition of the equipment. Therefore I calibrate frequency.

Technically, yes. The comment above gives great advice. I still recommend mixing at the one gallon a minute rate because like the comment says your spraying can be inaccurate and conditions change. If weeds are not dying, then mix a little stronger until you get results.

Chadd, Using your mixing formula, is it correct that my backpack sprayer that sprays 0.5 gal per minute should receive 2.2oz of Avenue South (low end) per 1 gallon of water? This is what I did, but ended up spraying 1.89oz/ 1000 sqft, which is the top end of the recommended 1.1 to 1.8fl oz per 1,000sqft. I used dye, but I guess I may have overlapped? @@bettercallchadd
