This is a step-by-step tutorial on how to knit socks with a german short row heel the easy way. It's a very easy sock heel pattern perfect for beginners. It creates a very snug fit and is ideal for rather slender feet.
The basic recipe goes like this:
The heel is knit across half of your stitches (so if you cast on 50, you knit across 25)
Then you divide the heel stitches into three equal parts (if your number isn't dividable by 3, the middle sections gets more stitches. eg. 9/10/9 or 10/12/10). Place stitch markers to mark these three section.
You knit it in three parts:
1) first you knit short rows from the edges until you reach the two stitch markes.
2) then you add two rounds of plain stockinette stitch where you k2tog tbl all double stitches
3) and then you knit short rows starting from the two stitch markers towards the edges.
You can exchange the German Short row technique for any other method you like. It basically doesn't matter - the pattern remains the same.
For a roomier short row sock heel, consider repeating the first part three times (with 2 rounds of knit stitches in between) instead.

I am not knitting socks. Just German short rows on a sweater's neck. I am really left handed and knit continental style. This is the ONLY tutorial --and I've watched several--where the instructor actually shows what they are doing and explains what happens. I have watched it every time I need to be reminded about double stitches and German short rows, esp since parts of the authors of this pattern think I read their minds.!

I realize this might be a bit much to post as a comment... I am SO grateful that you, Norman, spend your time making these videos. I tried to pick up knitting for years and have failed repeatedly. I've really wanted to learn, because my mom was an amazing knitter - she passed away while I was still a kid, and this has been a way for me to, as an adult, reconnect with or at least, honor, some of her passions. We did not have a very good relationship, but I want to remember her for all the beautiful and good things she did and was, and knitting was one of her skills and passions. I am proud to say, that I've made my first pair of socks and and currently working on my second - along with a knitted sweater, which is for my 5 yo daughter, whom I partly named after my mother. It feels very full circle and healing, to be able to knit something for my daughter, which she would have done, had she still been here. That was a very long way of saying THANK YOU, but I did want to show the magnitude of something so simple as a craft and for you to know, that while you make a living (I hope) out of this channel, you do SO much more than that. So thank you, from a daughter, a mother and now also a knitter, in Denmark.

This has been the clearest & easiest tutorial for gsr I’ve seen. I started my first sock & had so much trouble with the standard heal flap that I ripped it out. The slipped stitches made the tension far too tight. I was going to do an afterthought heel, but this looks easier than I thought. Plus, there’s no bulk or seam. Danke schoen for this tutorial. Have a great day.

Couldn't see the point of pulling the stitch over on a sweater neck back either, except that it must be some kind of place marker. Call me dense. I am learning this heel and have seen several videos, but I like yours the best! Thank you for explaining that the double stitch can be formed either by slipping knitwise or purlwise. I have been using the purlwise slip stitch, but I am getting holes. This may be because I am not knitting through the back loops. I am concerned that I will get bumps or lumps, and my feet are very sensitive (“Princess and the Pea” sensitive).

While others may not have the same results, I wanted to share what I’ve found. I appreciated your comment that the double stitch could be made either by slipping knitwise or purlwise; purlwise was easier for me. Hi Norman. Thank you for this great video. I really enjoy this German short row heel for my baby socks. With the first I discovered that although this is a simple heel in theory it is very unforgiving and if, for instance you drop a stitch it is nearly impossible to sort it out. I ended up doing my first heel 5 times. The second heel I paid close attention and deliberately slowed down and got it done in 1. I will confess that I think I did 1 too many rows in the heel, I think watching your video, yet again, you knit across the entire row when you are knitting the two last double stitches together. I have therefore ended up with a couple of little holes. I have played with the yarn and moved it along. But this was my learning for next time. Thank you once again, love this heel, love this video ❤

I absolutely loved this video! Such a clear explanation, the best I have seen yet on GSRs! I also really like the two rows of knit for stabilizing before picking up the double stitches. I used to just go from decreasing straight to increasing, and it definitely leaves more of a gap. One question: I was not clear at the end of your video about how to handle picking back up the double stitches if you use the slipping purlwise method instead of slipping knitwise as your grandmother taught you. You mentioned that you just knit the two legs of the double stitch together on right side rows, but do you have to purl the double stitch together through the back loop on the wrongside rows?

good question terri. I'm not 100% sure what will give teh best results here so I'dhave to test it myself. i never actually knit it that way. So, I recommend knitting a little swatch and check what you like better. I plan to do a short-row tutorial in january (probably).

Hi Norman I emailed you and you said to post a public question, i love how your sock lookes with the boomerang heel, i would like to find a pattern that is a top down sock, with that heel and i need help with how to finish the toe, so many options, like a banded toe? can you please make a video on a toe? thank you
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 2 жыл бұрын
yeah..thank you for your understanding. I only have a full sock tutorial with a heel flap and gusset heel. Since producing such a tutorial takes a looot of time (we are talking upwards of 40 hours) i am currently not in the possition to accomodate your request. But really my sock videos shows you everything you need and u just need to switch to this video for the heel. everything else would stay the same.

Could you possible show this using 2 circular needles instead of the 4 DP needles?

Not sure where you would feel there is a difference? It's the exact same pattern. So, no. But I have a toe up sock tutorial where I use a variation of this heel.

Seriously - this was the shortest, simplest and clearest video on GSRs I've seen so far. Thank you! I'll be waiting for that book you'll be writing for us 😉😉😉... Speaking of: can you suggest a book on the principles of designing and short rows to shape shoulders etc? I've been looking for the practical/technical aspects of how we calculate number or rows/stitches to work on to shape garment, but especially during top-down seamless construction, but haven't had much luck. Or maybe you can create such a tutorial for us???🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Thanks for the very good video Norman. How do you close the lateral gaps between the upper foot and heel when continuing to knit in the round after finishing the heel? LG Chris
@NimbleNeedles
@NimbleNeedles 3 жыл бұрын
well, idealy speaking, there shouldn't be a gap. If you use stitch marker and move the return point a bit down the needle (so not as the last stitch on the needle) then this often helps a lot. And if you watch my video on fixing mistakes (i published that 3 weeks ago or so), i am also showing a way to adjust tension afterwards and you can use that to close the gap as well.

New to knitting over all, so I was intimidated by sock knitting. Add to that the name of this technique, and I had been struggling to think "how on Earth am I going to understand this in writing?!? Well, thanks to you, I have set the anxiety aside and have a wonderful, clear understanding of the German Short Rows!! Thank you, Norman!!

At 11:34, I notice the double stitch is left-legged but you're purling it normally. Is that intentional, or should it be purled through the back loop in order to not twist the double stitch? I noticed that all the other times you knit through the double stitch, it was through the back loop.

Hi, I'm new to knitting and I was wondering if it is necessary to knit the two full rounds in between? I am knitting with a contrasting colour and that would mean I have to switch yarn each time because I don't want the constrasting colour at the top of the sock. Thanks in advance!

Socks are on my knitting bucket list for this year. I learned the german short row from your other video earlier this year and used it on a sweater neckline that I couldn't understand the pattern instructions. Heels always seemed so complicated but this looks very clean and simple. Thanks for another great video. You are taking up a lot of the space on my knitting instructions playlist. :)

I'm a fairly recent convert to sock knitting but am now a self-confessed sock-a-holic!! So far I've been using the heel flap and gusset technique, but for my latest sock I thought I'd try something different, just for a change. Your video tutorial (as well as the clear written instructions) is so helpful - very clear and easy to follow. The only comment I'd make (and it is a comment, not a criticism) is that as I'm not a continental knitter I struggled at first to understand exactly how to do the mds stitches - however, I got there in the end! In fact, I might try your video on how to do continental knitting. I'm quite happy doing English style knitting, but it's always good to learn something new - and you really do make it easy and enjoyable. Thank you Norman!

Okay so I have a question in regards to knitting two full rounds after you completed making all of the double stitches left and right of the markers are you meaning literally all three of those needles like all the way back around twice or just the heel stitches that you would do two rounds the timing for this would be approximately 9:00 thanks
@NimbleNeedles

Slupping the first stitch knitwise creates a much cleaner stitch. I just finished doing a.german short row on socks by slipping purlwise. The our side looked ok but the knit side was a mess. So I dd a shadow wrap heel for the second sock and that was wonderful. I will have to give your technique a try before I say, “No German short rows for me.”

Very clearly shown & explained BUT I might have to completely re-learn my style of knitting & holding the wool in order to do this as for my WHOLE LIFE I have done it the English way holding the wool the other way round!! Yours is certainly better!!
