I appreciate how you casually said, I'm a continental knitter, and got straight to work. I crochet and have had the hardest time trying to find continental knitting tutorials so far.
@WatchBarbaraKnit3 жыл бұрын
I learned to crochet when I was young so when I learned to knit as an adult continental was the most comfortable option for me. You should see some of the videos where I try to show stitches with right and left hand ... hilarious. All of my videos will have continental in them, right hand occasionally. Hmm, maybe I should add continental knitting to my tags?

Hi there I really enjoy this video and your indroduction to this method of kniting crescent shawls. Plus, as a bonus, a review of long tail cast on. I just have one question? Is there a specific reason for the final row incorferating purl stitches rather than either being a garter type row as with the rest, or incorporating purls in all the wrong side rows? Is that simply a stylistic choice, or is there an integral structural reason I'm not aware of? I'm assuming if I try either of the other variets, nothing will explode? Thanks again for your informitive video.
@WatchBarbaraKnit4 жыл бұрын
I am glad you enjoyed the video! The texture pattern in the center is simply the one I chose for this pattern, you can use the increasing technique in this with pretty much any stitch pattern on the inside. You could do all garter or add in lace, cables, whatever strikes your fancy!
@jeangorn46174 жыл бұрын
Perfect. Thanks for the clarification. Similar question. Is there a reason the increase is a k 1 yo k 1 instead of a k 1 yo k 1 b?

It is all going to depend on your gauge and your yarn, but the eyelet edging that is built into this should help at the neckline. You would have to do some sort of texture at the bottom.

I am constantly trying to improve my videos and this one is almost four years old LOL! My main concern, from feedback from viewers with visual disabilities, is that there is high contrast between the needles and the yarn. It has taken some time to find the right balance and I'm still working on it. I do tend to use medium toned yarns in newer videos. But red is a problem for my camera LOL - it just doesn't like to film it.

Barbara, because I like the look of this pattern so much, can you tell us how to enlarge it? I’m already using a Sz 9 needle on a 4wt yarn but I’d like more coverage over the collar bone area. If the solution is mathematical, I’d be stumped. Thank you for your step-by-step tutorials and positive vocal reinforcements. You remind me of my jr. high Home Ec. teacher, a really fun semester!
@WatchBarbaraKnit2 ай бұрын
I'll take Home Ec teacher. My mother was a teacher for 30+ years and I have the utmost of respect for the profession. As far as changing the size of this shawl, the two main ways is to just keep knitting and it will get bigger and bigger or to change the size of the yarn/needles (which you hit upon). Neither of these methods are going to change the shape of the shawl, it will always remain a crescent so I don't know that you will get any additional coverage in the collar bone area. There is no easy way to add fabric there. You might want to find a shawl shape that better fits what you are looking for,

@WatchBarbaraKnit3 жыл бұрын
It is totally going to depend on your yarn and needles - just knit until it is as big as you want it to be! You should be able to get a small shawl from a single, 400 yard skein of fingering weight. If you do sport/dk you will probably need 2 skeins. In worsted you might need 3 or 4 and even more for bulky.

Hello again I have a question about the slip stitch edging. On the wrong side, you slip the first stitch purl wise, yarn in front, then move the yarn back for the next knit stitch? and do the same to the final stitch, and those are knitted on the next row? And on the right side row you knit as normal? How is this functionally different from the normal slipping the first stitch purl wise yarn behind, and knitting the last stitch?

This is a very old video and I don't know what needle that is. It doesn't even seem to be in my needle collection any more. It is definitely a metal needle tho, not bamboo. And it isn't Chiagoo needle, I can tell by the type of cable on it. My understanding of Chiagoo is that you can use their red lace cables on any of their interchangable tips.

Hi Marly I’m hoping you can help me.... I’ve begun this shawl and did not do what is in the NOTES for the top edge. I’m 185 stitches in so I’m hoping it won’t matter too much. Also can I continue past 285 stitches to make it longer. Thank you great tutorial! Joann

Hi! I'm not Marly but I can try to help you. As long as your top edge is working for you then go for it. These little patterns are intended for people to improvise. And you can make it as big as you want, all you need is more yarn.

Hi I love your video would like to know what needles you are knitting with
@WatchBarbaraKnit2 жыл бұрын
So those are some random needles that I have no idea where they came from and actually the cable on them is horrible. But I liked the color and went out and found Knitter's Pride Zings which have a very similar feel and are what I use in a lot of videos.

You should always check the description below the video - that is where I put links to stuff. But here is the link to that video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/babYkIahgNKmq8k

I might have missed it in the video but what do you do with row 1 after the initial setup? Do you just knit all the stitches in between the edges?
@WatchBarbaraKnit4 жыл бұрын
Exactly! It might have been written on the screen instead of said out loud. This is one of my earlier videos and as I have learned how to make better videos I have tried to be conscious of making sure I verbalize everything for my vision impaired viewers. My apologies.

What needle size did you use for the fingering weight? I'm going to swatch but your answer would provide a starting point
@WatchBarbaraKnit7 жыл бұрын
For fingering weight I would start swatching with a 5 or a 6.
@kristenv807 жыл бұрын
I was considering a 6. Thank you for the confirmation...I'm a new knitter
