I’m starting my first cotton garment and I’m having a terrible time trying to get gauge. I’m very close to gauge using the same yarn and needles in the pattern pre-blocking. But post-blocking, my swatch grows by 20%, so I’m trying smaller needles and even drying my swatch in the dryer. Do you have any recommendations for meeting gauge with cotton yarn? (I suspect the designer didnt taking blocking into consideration).
@WatchBarbaraKnit4 күн бұрын
If the pattern calls for blocking then I would surmise that the designer took blocking into consideration. My suggestions would be to do what you have figured out for yourself ie: to adjust your needle size to compensate for the difference between your gauge and the designer's gauge and consider the dryer. The only other troubleshooting thing I can think of is to make sure you are swatching in the round if the pattern is knit in the round. Cotton is quite notorious for growing and tends to be knit at a tighter gauge to compensate.

Hi there, Thank you so much for going out of your way to describe things. I love how much you talk. I am completely blind so I really appreciate how much you explain. I was definitely confused by these yarn weights when I first started knitting and so I really appreciate you clearing this up for me. Your videos are the ones that I listen to when I don’t understand something. Thank you for all that you do.

This is extremely helpful!!! I am not an absolute beginner, but I learned so much from this video! I am considering getting an interchangeable set. So far I just have a few sizes I have purchased for different projects and even a super cheap bundle of small ones that don't work well but we're all I could afford at the time and I made it work. I have been watching some great videos reviewing different sets. You can tell that she has so much experience and is able to tell advice that I haven't heard on other's' videos. I really understand my knitting better and why I would want different qualities in needles and in different situations from this video. I feel like I have been taught to fish instead of given a fish🐟 Thank you!
@WatchBarbaraKnit4 күн бұрын
I am so glad this video was helpful to you. I think one of the differences between this video and one that is reviewing a specific set is that those tend to be ones where the manufacturer has supplied the set for review (I have done this before). When doing that one mostly focuses on the pros and cons of that specific set and bringing up what might be competing sets is not really the thing to do. I just decided to make this video with the needles I have laying around so I could say whatever I want LOL!

I would call myself an intermediate knitter, not advanced because I am unsure of my execution. I mean, you can follow all the directions in a knit pattern, but if your tension is off, your edges are sloppy, your ssk's are wonky, etc., do you know what I mean? I am relatively new to your channel and fb group and am learning tons from you.
@WatchBarbaraKnit4 күн бұрын
Welcome to the channel! Intermediate is a great place to be, there is always something new to learn but you feel like you can attack just about anything.
@heartland29711 күн бұрын
I took a 3-yr timeout from knitting until recently. I took a correspondence course to improve my tension and the feedback (which was perfectly accurate) was a devastating blow to my precious ego. Therefore, my first project back was an easy pattern (scarf) that I hope will stand out for the advanced technique. I recently got some great advice which is to "protect the knitting" so if the feedback makes you want to quit, then maybe find a different way to get feedback in small doses.
@WatchBarbaraKnit4 күн бұрын
I am fascinated by the idea of a knitting correspondence course ... I didn't know such a thing existed. Sometimes the point of doing something is to just bring yourself joy. You don't owe it to anyone to be particularly "good" at whatever that might be, including knitting.

Thank you! How would I substitute different weight yarns for a crocheting pattern? I have a crochet cardigan pattern that calls for a 5 weight. I want to use a 4 weight. Thank you in advance.
@WatchBarbaraKnit14 күн бұрын
I am afraid that I do not crochet so I cannot give you an educated response to this question. My guess would be that the process would be very similar with knitting a gauge swatch and doing the math.

Thanks for all the info. I have an off rhe wall question. On the WPI does the diameter of the measuring tool make a difference? i.e. a half inch cylinder versus a two inch cylinder? Thanks for the contrasting yarn in the demo. Like you I would only use the break test. Bleach messes up my breathing and working with fire and small amounts of yarn, even using tweezers, would be dangerous. Thanks for doing the research and sharing the knowledge. I learned a lot, as always.
@WatchBarbaraKnit17 күн бұрын
The size of the cylinder doesn't matter for the measurement. But you will have to unwind more yarn.

Thank you I have had cones of yarn donated to me and they have no labels.
@WatchBarbaraKnit22 күн бұрын
Cool! One thing about cones. Frequently cones are not actually marketed for hand knitting but instead for weaving and sometimes even machine weaving. That doesn't mean that you cannot knit with them, but they might have spinning oils still on them which makes them appear to be thinner than they actually are. I would highly recommend knitting some swatches and washing them to get any possible oils out. They may bloom unexpectedly. I had a knitting friend who had a cone of yarn that, straight off of the cone, it would measure in as a fingering weight yarn based on WPI but it was actually a DK weight yarn. You could only tell it was DK after it was washed and all of the spinning oils came off.
