Thank you for giving me words Maryna! I’ve been spending years trying to understand what my grandma taught me, as by the time I learned my knitting style didn’t match anyone’s I knew, she had already passed away. I was tickled pink when I came across your introduction to Russian/Eastern style knitting because it was _finally_ a style I was familiar with, but it was only true for the knit version. Now I can finally give my purling method a name too: eastern uncrossed purling

Wow! I love the purling technique. Continental knitter here. I’m going to try the uncrossed eastern knitting technique as I really like the working yarn to the back purling technique. Outstanding tutorial! Thank you!

I love these tutorials for Eastern Knitting. This is how I learned as a child. I find it so simple and it eliminates many of the complaints new knitters have. It's much faster and uses fewer motions.

Very interesting. For ribbing I'm using the combination style. I purl the way you do it. Definitely going to try this! I love learning new things. I came from throwing on straight needles to continental knitting on circular needles which gave me great advantage in relaxer and faster knitting. I'm going to try this for sure. Thanks for this tutorial!

I partly knit this way as I am a two handed knitter who loves to knit double knitting and this helps keep it easier by doing every second stitch this way, usually the knit stitch of the pair. Thank you for explaining it 😊

Very interesting, especially the purling. I’ve always had a problem with purling (it hurt my right wrist) and is why I taught myself to knit backwards. But this way of purling, especially with the yarn at the back, looks like it will be much easier to do and easier on my wrist! I’m definitely going to try this as I’ve avoided knit/purl stitches before because of this. Thanks for sharing this with us! ❤❤❤

I love watching your Friday tutorials Maryana. Your knitting is so beautiful. I am an English thrower and doubt I have the patience to learn your Russian style . I do believe though that continental, norwegian and your styling of knitting helps with tension and therefore neatness. I tried Portugueses and loved it so much but plain knitting and purling is simple, when it comes to cables, colourwork and shaping that’s a different story 🥰so I will continue with my English style of throwing and admire everyone else’s♥️♥️♥️
@10rowsaday7 күн бұрын
My dear Christine. It is perfectly fine to use the English knitting style, and there is absolutely no need to switch to a different way of knitting and purling. Knitting is all about joy and if English knitting feels easy to you, that's wonderful. Warm hugs to you, my friend 🤗

@@10rowsadaythank you. I agree knitting is about enjoyment . I love watching other people knit also. I find it soothing as I find a stretch of stockinette also soothing❤❤❤

If you want the purl to be untwisted but don't want to come through the back, you can insert the needle normally but wrap the yarn clockwise vs counterclockwise. Some people call it "combination knitting". Makes a beautiful piece of untwisted fabric and is my preferred method when working flat. 💕🤗
@10rowsaday7 күн бұрын
Thank you for the suggestion. Combination knitting is an interesting knitting style, but with Eastern Uncrossed we have to enter the stitch as we do when we purl through the back loop. Otherwise, the stitch will be twisted no matter how we wrap the yarn around the needle. It is amazing to see how many different ways we can use to purl a stitch :-)

Ever since I switched to continental-style knitting, I’ve been wrapping my purls as you show in this video. So, it turns out I wasn’t actually knitting continental, but rather what some people’s call “hybrid continental” or “combination continental”. BONUS: It turns out stockinette rows out was less when knitting this way!

Interesting method. I'll have to try it. But I find if I'm knitting in the round and its all purl Portuguese knitting is so easy and quick. And tension is more even. Perhaps you could show that method?

I started knitting recently and I inadvertently knit in this style. I tried the ways the books and tutorials taught and none of it felt right until I just started doing this technique. I think it’s because I’m left handed and I began in fiber arts as a crocheter.

I am so glad you found the knitting style that feels right to you. Even though it took a bit of "figuring out". Happy knitting!

Is it possible to use this technique if you knit English style, throwing the yarn with right hand? And .... also when I occasionally use straight needles, and fix my right needle using a knitting belt?
@10rowsaday7 күн бұрын
Sure, you can use the same way to wrap the tip of the right needle with the yarn no matter whether you hold the yarn in your left or your right hand. Traditionally, this knitting style is worked with the yarn in the left hand, but who says we can't improvise? 😊

I'm afraid I don't like it. Such contortions. I couldn't do it anyway: I'm too strongly right handed. I'm a flicker. I can knit as fast as a continental knitter and purling is not a problem. I wish people weren't made to feel inadequate if they can't knit continental style.
@esmekaffen496110 күн бұрын
Oh! I don’t think anyone, and especially Maryna, is trying to make throwers feel inadequate! There are so many ways to knit, which is great as we can choose the method that works best for each of us. One of my knitting buddies is a thrower and he knits WAY faster than I will ever be able to do! I say ignore those trying to feel superior and enjoy your knitting 🧶! ❤❤
@10rowsaday7 күн бұрын
There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a thrower. It is never my intention to make anyone feel inadequate. Knitting is a wonderful craft, and it is amazing to see all the different ways we can use to knit and purl stitches. The only purpose of this video is to show one more way to do it. That's all. Happy knitting, my friend!

I've been knitting for over 60 years so I'm quite able to ignore lots of things from anyone, especially newbies, but there is no doubt that there's a push towards continental knitting. It's everywhere on Instagram especially. There is also no doubt that throwing is very slow and requires more hand movements than continental knitting, but who cares? Unless you're paid by the hour to make something, what's the rush?
@jacquelinechneour54805 күн бұрын
I know there isn't, although I was glad to move from it to flicking -- 60 years ago. I'm sorry I reacted this way to your video, but continental knitting is being promoted constantly, everywhere. People are posting videos of themselves knitting continental on Instagram and asking, 'This is how I knit. How do you knit?' They couldn't care less about the answers: they're just showing off their speed. For the first time, the other day, I saw a video of someone knitting English style and saying, 'This is how I knit, deal with it!' And lots of people were saying how relieved they were reading that and how inadequate they were usually made to feel. I've been knitting for over 60 years; I can't be made to feel inadequate.
