How to Knit Backwards

This is truly beautiful... and one of these days, I'll tackle it once I get some practice in on this back-and-forth knitting. I just knew it had to be possible. I just knew it, but since I know so little about knitting, I didn't know how to ask the proper question until I came across your live lunches. I just knew you would take the time and figure out what I was asking and to help me and you did now I have a name for it. I feel brilliant for figuring it out, and asking you about it before I ever started knitting, and some of these folks have been doing it for 40 years. I think I'm gloating a little bit. I better get back to Earth with my boring crochet handles for my bag....

this is why a life line is useful in complicated patterns. I did this by accident in a complicated cabled pattern and it took me forever to figure out this was what i did. It is useful when it is what you intend to do.. Learning through error almost took me out. 😂

It’s called Purling backwards if you are working on a Garter stitch fabric. It’s different than if you were working on a Stockinette fabric.

I'm sure it could be considered both, it's a matter of how you look at it. You could say it's purling on the right side because the right side is facing, or you could say knitting on the wrong side, just from the other direction. I prefer to call it by the same name as if I were turning my work and working forwards, because that way the pattern instructions don't have to change. I'm still knitting on the wrong side of the fabric per the pattern, I'm just doing it without turning my work. I feel it's less confusing than changing the name of the stitch you're working just because you're looking at it from the other side :)
