Depends on your knitting style. In Norwegian knitting, you don't move it. She is using the American or English style of "throwing" so she needs to move it. Something she forgot to say.

I enjoyed your video and actually learned not only how to purl from watching this video, but I also learned how to do the basket weave stitch. I would love to know where you got those knitting needles! The only thing I find when knitters are doing these videos is they never say what size yarn or what size needle they are using unless I missed it! once again thank you this Memaw can now knit something different for her grandchildren! 67 and still learning that's a great day for me!

Thank you! I'm glad you found it helpful. The needles are from KnitPro. I'm not entirely sure of the sizes since this was filmed so long ago, but I would guess super chunky yarn and 10 mm needles.

How many std do you put on for a blanket
@jyothilakshmi1423 жыл бұрын
Beautifully explained. Thank you. You mentioned 8 +5. Is it 8 rows and 5 rings? Please clarify.
@RokoleeDIY3 жыл бұрын
Thank you :) That number is how many stitches you need to cast on at first to be able to make this pattern. You need to cast on a multiple of 8 stitches plus 5. (This is for flat knitting by the way). So for instance, in this video I cast on 21 stitches. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the video. It was easy to follow. What length circulars are you using?? I am going to try to make a scarf with this pattern but not sure what length of circulars to use.. 16”, 24”,29”, or 36”. Thank you

Sorry for the late reply, I can't actually remember which length I used. I'd go for maybe 24" and then if it's not right it's not difficult to change the cable:)

It's been a while so I'm not 100% sure, but the needles are either 10 mm or 12 mm, and the yarn is super bulky. Sorry I can't remember exactly!

How do you cast off the basketweave? Do you repeat the knitting to cast off?

You can bind off in pattern but to be honest I usually use the basic knit bind off :)

@smallfootprint29613 жыл бұрын
Very clear, but not sure what to do with it. Also not sure why 3 and 5, instead of 5 and 5, say.
@RokoleeDIY3 жыл бұрын
I personally think it would look best in projects like blankets/throws, or perhaps scarves. The idea with not having square blocks is so that it imitates basketweave texture, with the blocks looking like they are being woven together. If the blocks were squares, that would be a checkerboard pattern (which is also a valid - and quite popular - pattern :))

I wanted to use this stitch as part of a square in a blanket of different stitches. How would a cast on off 20 st. effect it?
@RokoleeDIY2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Casting on only 20 sts wouldn't work unfortunately - 21 sts works though. If you absolutely have to use 20 sts, you will have to try and come up with the design you want from scratch on knitting graph paper, altering the number of knit sts and purl sts on the rows until it all works out :)
@lunamotionproductions9559 Жыл бұрын
Is there an easy way to remember what row you are on? I’ve never done more than a 4 row pattern and this seem daunting. Thx
@RokoleeDIY Жыл бұрын
Yes, the best way is to learn how to 'read' your knitting and count rows. It's best to look up videos on this as I can't really cover it all in a comment, but that's a great skill to learn. To remember which side is the 'right side', I recommend putting a removeable stitch marker on that side, and that will give you a clue too. Hope that helps a little!

What size circular knitting needles and the name of the yarn you are using? I would like to knit chunky!
@RokoleeDIY6 жыл бұрын
I don't have the label anymore but I think the yarn was just labelled 'chunky' weight. I believe the needles are 12 mm...but it's best to use the size recommended on the label of the yarn you choose :) Thanks for watching!

@RokoleeDIY6 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid I haven't sat down and worked out the circular pattern for it yet, as there are quite a few changes to make in order to convert the flat pattern. However, this free pattern will hopefully help you: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/man-thing Thanks for your comment :)

If I do a bigger multiple of 8 (trying to make a baby blanket) ,does that change the amount of knit 1 at the begining of some rows? Or do I still keep it just 1 knit stich? Also what size needle did you use
@RokoleeDIY7 жыл бұрын
Yes, the pattern stays the same no matter what multiple of 8 stitches you use :) I can't remember which needles they were but they would have been 8mm or 12mm. From the video it looks like they might have been 12, which is on the big side for the yarn I was using. Hope that helps!

How Many Stitches to cast on if doing this blanket with 46” wide on 1 Circular Needle?
@RokoleeDIY2 жыл бұрын
Hi! To work out how many stitches to cast on to make a blanket 46" wide, you would first need to knit a basketweave swatch in the yarn you're going to use for the actual blanket. Then work out how many stitches you have created per inch (horizontally) of the swatch, and multiply that by 46 :)

Is a circular needle easier for a beginner to handle?
@RokoleeDIY4 жыл бұрын
Hi! I personally use them because they can be used with most knit projects so are versatile, and often my knitting is too wide for straight needles. I think if you are a beginner and don't need to use the cable I would avoid them just because the unused cable can get in the way and be annoying!

Why change things at row 6? Why knit one first?
@RokoleeDIY3 жыл бұрын
At row 6 you're knitting the second row of blocks, and in order for these blocks to be centred over the first row (i.e. the stockinette blocks centred above the garter stitch blocks, or vice versa), there just needs to be that single stitch at the beginning and edge :)

@RokoleeDIY5 жыл бұрын
Hi! Just realised I made a mistake in my reply as I didn't take the 'plus 5' bit into consideration in the calculation, so here is my revised answer: For a blanket, the number of stitches you cast on must still be a multiple of 8, plus 5. This is the most important bit. After that it's up to you and depends on what yarn you are using and how big you want the blanket to be. A good way of working it out is to cast on 13 stitches and knit one repeat of the pattern (with the same size of yarn you will be using for the blanket). Depending on how big this ends up you can then work out how many stitches you need to cast on to get the size of blanket you want. I.e. if this sample ends up 10 cm wide and you want a blanket about 100 cm wide, you know you will need to cast on around 10 x 13 (=130) stitches. 130 - 5 = 125, and then how many 8s go into 125? Approximately 16 (8 x 16 = 128). Then add 5 back on and that gives you (128 + 5 =) 133 stitches you should cast on. The length is easier to work out because you just keep knitting repeats until it gets to the length you want, then stop ! Hope that helps, and isn't too complicated :)
@sarawael19435 жыл бұрын
okay but now when i made the sample it gives me 8 cm so when i multiple 13*8=104 ans +5=109 so actually it made me very upset so i made it in onther numbers of cast on and if it works i will send u the pic and thank u :)
