Amazing!! I don't know why I found your video first, when I searched toe-up socks, but I'm so glad I did. I am now on my 3rd pair, made with different wools for different size feet! And I'm addicted to knitting socks right now. I've been kitting since I was 4 and didn't think there was anything new to learn, until I got this bee in my bonnet that I wanted to knit socks. It's super easy and I have adapted it to suit my needs. Thank you SO much!! 😁😁😁

@@NewLeafDesigns I have second sock syndrome whenever I complete knitting the first sock and it takes me days (sometimes even a week) to get started on the second sock. I love how the instructions are so clear that I'll experiment how to cast on 2 at the same time...will be tricky but worst case scenario I'll just transfer one pair onto another needle set to get the working yarn and stitches in the right place and then transfer them back onto magic loop. So when you loop the top yarn around the bottom needle, if you don't come in through in between the needles (but from the bottom, like the top needle) you don't have to knit the first row from the back loop. Feels so much less fiddly for me personally. Lovely clear explaination though! Keep it up. 👍

Yes, exactly! I'm used to looping both yarns from the inside to the outside, but you can totally do it this way to avoid the twisted knitting dueing the first row. Thank you for your comment!

Hi! That's not a dumb question at all :) If you want to get exactly the same socks, yes you cast on with the dark green and change to oatmeal later. Just for instruction purposes, I thought it would be easier to see if I showed the cast on with the oatmeal colour yarn. Happy knitting!

Hi Carmen, Do you have any tricks for avoiding ladders when knitting with 3 DPNs? For some reason, I am fine when transitioning to and from knitting the front of the sock... but I am getting a ladder where the 2 needles cross for the bottom of the foot. Any tips? Thanks!
@NewLeafDesigns
@NewLeafDesigns 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jake, thanks for your question! Hmm that's a tough one.. I suppose you have tried it already to tug the first st on a Dpn a little tighter, that usually helps. Also make sure the dpns you are switching between aren't too far apart, so they don't put strain on the yarn. If it persists, I would recommend switching to Addi Crasy Trio needles where you only knit with 2 flexible dpns. Happy knitting!

I love the clarity of your videos on knitting socks. This is my second try at knitting period. The first was a pair of socks with regular knitting needles which gave me a seam and not a well defined sock pattern. This is my second attempt. I have tried to knit with the suggested finger yarn.....it is way too fine for my skill level. I am now using a baby yarn which has made the knitting process a little better for me to manage. I am however, skeptical at how well this sock will wear, any thoughts?
@NewLeafDesigns
@NewLeafDesigns 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Teresa, thank you for your comment! I can understand that the fingering yarn is too fine to work with, I sometimes find it fiddly too! If you're going for a thicker yarn, it is best to look for a wool and nylon blend. Wool and polyester blend might also work. Baby yarns are usually not very strong, but they will be great for bed socks. Using baby yarn might make the socks a bit slippery to walk on, so keep that in mind too. Hope this helps!

Hello, thank you for your message :) is the fabric itself nice, or is it a bit stiff? If you want the fabric to be looser, you can go up a needle size. If the fabric is nice as it is, but the size of the sock is simply too small, I recommend adding more sts. For example 64, 68, or 72 sts.

Thanks Carmen for your sock videos. I am gauge challenged. Any thoughts on how to achieve the correct gauge for knitting socks? Thanks again for explaining knitting socks:)
@NewLeafDesigns
@NewLeafDesigns 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Susie, thank you for your comment and apologies for my late reply! I don't really measure my gauge for socks, what is most important for me is the density of the stitches. I like a very dense fabric for socks! So usually, I knit with 2,25mm needles. If the sock yarn is quite thick I will use 2,5mm needles. You can try to use 60 stitches for your socks, as this size fits most people. The thing that matters most in sizing is the lenght of the foot of the sock. Just try it out and after a while you will find how to knit socks that are perfect for you!
@Whoismindy
@Whoismindy 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Carmen. Love your tutorial videos on sock knitting. But I would like to clarify with you on the needle size. For the circular needle, you mentioned that you’re using size 1.5 (2.5mm) , but the pattern is 2.25mm needle? Which one should I use if I’m using Scheepjes Metropolis yarn?
@NewLeafDesigns
@NewLeafDesigns 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mindy! Thank you for your question. It depends on your gauge really. I started out knitting socks on 2.5mm needles, but now I use 2.25mm needles to get a tighter knit fabric which improves the sturdiness of socks. You could also use 2.25mm for the toes/heels, and 2.5mm for the leg. If you're a beginner, I recommend starting with 2.5mm needles.

I'm new to knitting ,is it easier to use the double end pointed needles or the hoop?
@NewLeafDesigns
@NewLeafDesigns 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Good question, but not so easy to answer! I prefer circular needles (with the cable in between) because my stitches slide off the double pointed needles. But I also know a lot of people like double pointed needles, so it's a matter of personal preference. For beginners I always recommend trying circular needles first because I feel they offer more stability to your stitches.

This is really helpful thank you. Though I have to ask you what's wrong with your audio? Is there a difference between knitting with two needles and a circular needle?
@NewLeafDesigns
@NewLeafDesigns 4 жыл бұрын
Hi! It does make a small difference, most patterns are written for circular needles, and in that case you divide all stitches in 2 (for example 30 sts on each needle if you have 60 sts in total). For double pointed needles, your stitches are divided over 3 or 4 needles, so that is a different amount of stitches per needle. It just changes how you need to read your pattern :) otherwise, its just a matter of preference!
