beadaholique.com - Andrea Morici, Beadaholique's senior designer, demonstrates how to make knots used in jewelry making, including the overhand knot, square knot, surgeon's knot, lark's head knot and sliding or adjustable knot. Great for finishing the ends of necklaces and bracelets. There's also a demonstration of how to hang a donut pendant with knotted cord.

THANK YOU so much for this lesson. I have watched 8 different videos numerous times each & just couldn't figure out the sliding knot. I watched your video ONLY TWICE & I now have it down. Andrea you are an awesome teacher. Thank you again! I wish you & those around you a HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Thank you for making this tutorial. I've tried from other videos for the last double knot necklace, very confusing. But, you explained it perfectly, so my pea-brain could learn it. Thank you!

Hi Andrea, sorry - the Reef Knot (also known as a Square Knot) should lie FLAT, you use the same cord to do the wrap over and through, both times - your knot is a common mistake - known as a granny knot, lumpy and unreliable, and the reason lots of people have trouble with their shoe laces (the bow keeps coming undone!) It so happens, that if you do the reef knot correctly, when you flip one side over, you'll have a larks head knot - but that's another story!

Your demonstration is clear but I want to know what situations each of those knots are best used.

Simple knots, double/square knots and the surgeons knots can be used to create spaces between beads, or to finish bracelets and necklaces. The lark's head is used for beads that have a large hole in the middle of them. Thanks for watching!

Yes, as another has said, the "square" knot shown here is actually a "granny" knot. I also wouldn't trust this "sliding" knot very much since an overhand knot comes lose very easy.

jim I The sliding knit should be a half hitch or a full hitch. If those are done, there is no fear that they will come undone. Go back to knit trying basics or Scouting.

Gak! That's a granny knot, not a square knot! A square knot starts with an overhand knot sure enough, and the second half is another overhand knot, but if the first crosses left over right, the second must cross right over left to complete a proper square knot.

Do those actually stay? They look like they would just come apart.

For a final finishing knot we recommend the surgeon's knot, the third knot shown here. An overhand knots can come undone fairly easily if it's used as finishing knot, but they're still useful if you're knotting on something like a stopper bead at the beginning of a project (In other words any bead you want to be able to take off easily at the end). Adding a surgeon's knot to finish off a piece of thread that contains several overhands knots is another common use. Square knots are great for decoration, they're one of the foundational knots of macrame.

Andrea, the example of your square not it not a true square knot, it is what is called a twisting square knot. Sometimes the knot you tied is called a series of half square knots. You should watch a video on how to tie a square knot correctly.
