I don’t gossip, but I work with young children and I suspect that by making humorous observations about them, that I may have crossed a line that gives the impression to two other people that I am receptive to hearing gossip about other adults. This video makes it clearer that I have two important things I have to do; stop commenting on children’s “antics”, and intervene when two adults in particular at work, criticize other adults I have to work with. Thanks for the “how to” video. Big Help!

Qns: Q1. Do I personally appear in the story? Q2. Was I directly asked not to share the story? Q3. Could this negatively impact someone's reputation? Q4. Have I talked with the person I am upset with? Q5. Am I listening to gossip without stopping it?

I can follow along with all the steps except Q5, gossip is so common place where I live and I find it pointless to always tell them to stop. Most of the time they won't rly listen to me so the only option I have is to withdraw from such types of conversation

#4 sometimes you cannot go to the source-when the source is abusive = brings more abuse.
@lindsaywalton2 ай бұрын
That is an excellent point. There are times in life when the person we are trying to resolve a conflict with is abusive or otherwise dangerous in some way. If interacting with someone could lead to being harmed, wanting to harm them, or wanting to harm yourself, it is best to seek the help of someone who can assist in keeping everyone safe before initiating further discussions. This particular video focused on gossip is intended to address when people complain to others out of a lack of knowledge that speaking directly with the source of a problem is more socially constructive or complain to others because it is easier than facing the discomfort of having more direct conversations. I appreciate that you raised the broader concept of safety here. Conflict resolution skills are both simple and complex and built over time. Your comment helps to highlight the element of safety as a critical part of the process! Cheers!

Amazing Video...💙 I have a doubt... Can u pls help... If I know a person has a very bad attitude towards others... And inform such incidents to my friends... in order to caution them... Is it still considered gossip? Pls, reply...
@lindsaywalton4 жыл бұрын
That's an excellent question. Using the filter questions from the video you appear in the story (it's yours to share), you weren't asked to not share, however (IMPORTANT NOTE) you have described someone as having a bad attitude towards others to other people. This colors people's perspectives before they have interacted with the person (and maybe their experience would have been more positive). This does leave the door open for the person to claim you have defamed them. Whether you have talked with the person about their behavior so they have opportunity to correct it is another point to consider. Professionaly I would suggest the only time we warn others about negative attitdues is if it's somehow a safety issue. If the person is just genuinely unpleasant to be around on a regular basis then other people will pick up on that on their own and it leaves room for someone to have a positive experience if they connect on the same level. Anyone having a negative experience has opportunity to provide that person with feedback. They may not even realize they are doing it or might benefit from hearing people express boundaries that their behavior is not okay and needs to change. I would boil all that down to, if you were that person, how would you want others to handle having a bad experience with you. If you want to discuss further I'm happy to chat!

@@lindsaywalton Thank You So Much! But, What if the person is having a bad behaviour and attitude towards women in general, then is it considered gossiping if I inform others? Once again, only with the aim of cautioning them.
@fonbehronalddzelamonyuy9854 Жыл бұрын
Yes it is It the person hears it they will get hurt. So just walk up to the person with some compassion and give the sandwich model of feedback

But if you consciously recognize that, it means you can do something about it! Make a point of making your life and what you think about more interesting. Pursue the things in life you are curious about and you'll be able to talk about new ideas and skills and places, all that have to do with what You are up to. I think you have some fabulous new adventures ahead of you
