I'm just accepting that I probably have ADHD. I don't need to see a doctor, I'm fine with just self diagnosis because in the end it doesn't matter - but it does explain a lot of things to myself. And kind of knowing this is why I can't do things like follow recipes due to forgetting what step 1 is while trying to do step 1 helps - I kind of understand this is a structural limitation of my brain and I can stop beating myself up over it. I'm also WAY more aware of the fact that I'm always trying to do a dozen things at the same time, and I can kind of focus a little better when I'm aware I'm doing this. So yeah, I'm fine with my self diagnosis. It helps explains how my brain works and gives me some extra tools to manage it.

The one thing I'm scared about (in getting diagnosed) is the 'having symptoms before 12 years old'. Like... I don't remember that kind of details of my life, my memory is jumbled already. Plus, I think the symptoms I am experiencing now have become more obvious during high school (which I am in now), especially over covid. And less ancient people like me (43). I literally sent the e-mail which is going to start the process to check if I have ADHD an hour ago. I was already checked for Asperger's, which has a couple of similarities, but it's not that - which means that I'll likely have a name for what's been destroying my life over and over and over soon. And a way to live with it without having to rebuild every 3 years or so.

I’m 13 M and I’ve thought that I have adhd for a while now and it’s really taken a toll on my social/emotional health. My best friend that I love more than anything is not talking to me anymore because I’m so annoying and I always say things that I instantly regret. I feel like anyone and everyone around me dislikes me because of everything I do. I’m also struggling with severe anxiety and crippling depression, and I’m in a never ending rollercoaster of self deprication and belittlement. My mom is a nurse practitioner so I thought she would understand and let me see a doctor about getting diagnosed, but she just says, “I don’t want my child being loaded up with drugs” I told her that getting diagnosed doesn’t necessarily involve medication, and atleast knowing will help. I know no one is probably going to see this, I just wanted somewhere to rant.

I'd love to hear how things have been going for you. I'm 38, and was diagnosed last year, have been taking my meds consistently, and one of the things that struck me after adjusting to them was the clarity. The simple ability to have a thought, and retain it, have thoughts about it, come back to it. I didn't even understand that the brain *could* work that way. I spent so long just existing in the tangled web of my own thoughts I assumed everyone worked that way, that I just lacked some aspect of self-control that would allow me to be a 'normal' person.

My third psychiatrist (who I was seeing for depression) randomly mentioned that I might have ADHD, but then said that at least one of my other psychiatrists should have noticed it if I have it and then just went off on to another subject. I have thought about it a lot and I definitely have a lot of the symptoms. I want to be assessed for it but I am afraid of seeming like an attention seeker, even dough my friends (who have ADHD) think I have it too because of the way I, for example, hyperfocus on something in conversations, take over the entire conversation and ramble on and on for a really long time. Even now I am procrastinating by writing this, as I should be practising for the exam I have tomorrow... Also, I imagine people will think that I cannot have ADHD because I am a graduate student majoring in English, and have ok grades.

You can totally be a graduate student and have ADHD - there are PhD students and even professors with ADHD. I got a degree myself though couldn’t focus enough to finish two masters courses (in totally different subjects) in my twenties. Look up the diagnostic criteria and see you fit. I soooo wish I’d realised and got diagnosed younger than my early 40s as a lot of my life is a mess and the medication for ADHD significantly helps 92% of those that take it.

My favorite response to the “everyone is a little adhd” is this: After a difficult workout, a completely healthy person will likely be breathing really heavily, likely even wheezing. This doesn’t mean they are asthmatic. Having asthma means you have a fundamental physiological difference that makes breathing hard for you. Having asthma also means that breathing problems are a lot more frequent and serious, instead of temporary heavy breathing after finishing a 5k, it might be a total inability to breath while just walking to the mail box. Having adhd means I have a fundamental physiological difference that makes attention regulation hard for me. Having some of the symptoms to some degree sometimes isn’t the same as experiencing it 24/7 to the degree adhd people do.
@TheWhisperTexan4 жыл бұрын
Exactly I also have it 24/7. When I go to a restaurant ( before quarantine) I hear the plates and glasses clanging. I hear the waiter taking the order at the other table. I hear the murmuring of all the other conversations at the other tables. I hear the door to the kitchen open and close as the waiters go in and out. Finally I hear the person I'm with trying to talk to me. *All At The Same Time*

@@Zippy5618 Psychiatrists have an evaluation list of questions to ask you for an adult diagnosis. But before doing that, I would google & research medical articles on lists of ADHD symptoms. Copy a list or two out and check off the symptoms you do see yourself having. Also decide which ones are causing the most problems in functioning in your day-to-day life. This will help in your discussion with the doctor who can diagnose what is going on.

I never had some of these “more common symptoms” as a child, in fact they have only arisen in the past few months but I’ve always had a huge lack of patience, obsessions over a physical object and even still having tantrums at the shopping centre at 9 years old. My parents mistook it has bad behaviour but we are now starting to uncover some underlying issues. I’m in the middle of getting diagnosed with ADHD. Please remember that just because your symptoms don’t match the exact criteria, it doesn’t mean you don’t have it. It’s important that you get the right diagnosis and treatment.
