Boats like Edencraft, Cootacraft, Veitch, Whitepointer, Bass Strait, Southern Formula, Bertram, Haines Hunter, Caribbean etc can all provide an exceptional experience when set up well, but the opposite is also true when incorrectly set up.
I see too many great boats on the water every weeked which simply are NOT set up correctly and provide a poor boating experience to the owner, so its time to talk about it. In many cases, the owners dont know what to expect so they simply put up with it and often and up selling their boats due to disappoinment, thinking that a bigger / more expensive, more 'extreme' boat is always the answer.
Lets talk about how to identify boats in this category, what to consider when setting one up and what you do differently for an improved boating experience.

Back as a kid my dad had a Yalta 189 with a 90hp Yamaha. It had 21 degrees of deadrise but ample width compared to a similar Haines or Seafarer. The hull was double inner and out hull moulding so heavy. It was excellent for its size and dad would run a fine pitch prop if we were going outside or a higher pitch for just general running around.

Yeah even the new yaltas perform well and are good value against the big brands..... I don't mind the new 2200 fisherman's

In the process of of turning a 1996 Bayliner 2655 Ciera to a fishing boat i think it's got 16 degrees of deadrise but it must weigh about 2.5tonnes. Getting the 5.7lt TBI goings been an experience if i had the money I would drop a new MPI 5.7. I had no idea Yalta was still around.

Enjoying your videos, advice and knowledge. I’ve not owned a boat before, but been on a few when I was younger, back in the UK. Trying to convince the family to by a boat and do some fishing…!

No worries, yes it's a great way to get your family together and learn some new things etc. start with something small and easy, see how you all like it and go from there....

All very valid points. My boat is a Yalta 555 with 22 degree deadrise. David Flukes from 42 degree south deadrise will be fine tuning my boat around April. Can't wait to see the improvement he can make. Seems to be the way to go. No boat seller on such a large investment seems to have any idea how to set up an outboard.

Thanks for this video ! I will shortly take possession of a Whittley SL25 SD. A few people have told me that I was making a bad decision buying a stern drive boat. I felt otherwise for the fact that the boat has a 23deg deadrise at the transom, and an inboard would help with stability and ride. Now after watching this video I feel more assured with my purchase. The boat motor has great mid range torque and a duoprop. Off topic! I feel modern inboard SD are getting a bad wrap! Have you done a OB vs SD ? If not love to hear your opinion !

Yeah can do in another video and yes you are right. The modern versions are super slick, but most people fear what they don't understand and also the old ones are basically rubbish. So the sheet small volume of SD on trailer boats puts them at a popularity disadvantage. In many of these larger offshore trailer boats, SD can be a game changer, especially with a duo prop set up.

Hi - thanks for the info. Very helpful as usual. Have a couple of tech questions if that’s ok? FYI - I have a 535c Bar Crusher (BC) I am planning on getting some zip wakes. However, there are two types of zip wake. The first is standard I figure. The second comes with a chine. The BC has a 14.5 degree chine. Would a chine zip wake (about $400 more) be more suited to the BC Hull ? I guess that might also depend on the chine angle of the zip wake??? 2) On a completely seperate issue. Sorry. As I know you owned a BC I’m hoping you might know of a solution. I find the throttle doesn’t engage until it’s way past the point where the gears come in. The latter allowing you to coast at idle speed. When I want to get the boat moving I have to push the lever to 4-5cm before I start getting some revs. If I want full throttle (I.e. to plane) I’m now leaning right down to get full throttle to plane with the lever at about 90 degrees. Is there anyway to remove the slack between idle speed and gear engaged to where the throttle actually starts to engage with some revs? Have looked everywhere and can’t find a thing. It’s really annoying and unsafe as I’m leaning over like an old man and can’t see what I need to see. Any help very much welcomed.

Get the zipwakes that contour best to the shape of the hull and can go wider. If the chine model doesn't match well, just go standard but match to the flat area only. Don't overlap chine. Your engine, pretty standard behaviour for a non digital throttle and shift engine, so assuming that's what you have not much can be done. Hence I always tell people to buy dts. Drives me crazy also..... Good luck

Thanks mate. Appreciate the feedback. I’ll need to check the zipwakes chine angle. If it’s not exact - no point. 👍 Pitty about the throttle setup. Bloody pain in the arse, well my back. lol. Got to say it def makes it harder to control the boat when hitting big waves and going through big swells as when you’re arm is fully extended to work the throttle a sharp drop over a swell makes it hard to not push the throttle down further. Which isn’t good. Oh well. Such is life. Maybe we should take up basket weaving or something? Lol

Aren't the edencrafts just slightly modified haines hulls? 565, V19, 233.... the Cootacraft gunshot is basically a podded Haines V17 as well

@BaitBallin I'm assuming you're talking about the cootacraft coldfront and the other models based on the US powerboat racing hulls then?

Great video Would you put Haines Sigs in this category deep boats? Cheers
@BaitBallin
@BaitBallin 8 ай бұрын
Not really no. They are a variable deadrise, more designed to work well in a range of circumstances, more of an all rounder. But having said that, good engine set up, prop, height etc can greatly improve any boat.

@BaitBallin thank you for that. I'm in market for boat and have eye set on a 525f from them. Mostly bay and a bit of offshore in right conditions. Hanines sig did say that they do all the motor installs at the one place in Queensland and not rely on dealers interstate to do that component that seems to be the case with a lot of others. I don't know if that is a better thing or not with outboard setup. But found it interesting
@BaitBallin
@BaitBallin 8 ай бұрын
Yeah probably a better thing. 525f is a great boat for the size etc. Just make sure to order with max HP. Always worth it.

@@whitewhale-gq2kcMake sure you install a Yamaha outboard for reliability and resale value. Stay away from Mercury or Evinrude.

You are on the money, what happens when you simply think about things logically. For instance the 233 Hull was originally a twin Stern drive boat, twin V8's in race versions. Heavy engines, low COG, and forward of transom. Newer boats, have rather heavy outboards, higher COG, and well aft of transom and on PODS ! The funny thing is the stability didn't really matter to a race boat, but they were likely far more stable they these so called 'fishing' boats of today.
