I've always said "The value of (anything) is what someone is willing to pay for it". Seen many people sit on something for years trying to get what they thought it was worth to only see the value drop every month.

Hey Josh, must be a little chilly there with having to wear 4 layers of clothes, keep warm and keep safe, love the honesty and transparency of all your videos, your knowledge base of every aspect of the rv industry just floors me. Your 1 of a kind. I watch way too any videos (as my wife points out) from all different places and people and they all come across as sketchy pushy sales reps, but you are on a platform above the rest. Thank you for doing what you do!

We used the NADA guide as did the insurance company after the accident. I did not get hung up on the specific price that the tool returned but instead I used the hi/lo range to make an estimate of where ours would fall. From what I could tell the insurance company did the same thing and though they came in a bit higher than my price we were within a couple hundred bucks of each other. I think the key is to try to be honest on where your trailer falls in the spectrum. We all like to think our stuff is in mint condition when most fall more towards the middle. In our case I estimated the trailer to be in very good condition which was around $5K less than the best price and $12K over the lowest listed price. In the end I think we received a fair value for the trailer similar to what we would have received in a private sale (I don't do trade-ins on vehicles).

Hey Josh! I upgraded a bunch of stuff for my comfort and the ability to make my rv sell faster! I added 400 watts of solar/HD stronge arms/10 cubic dc fridge/ inverter 3000watts/ 560 AH of LIFPO4 batteries/ tankless water heater/ and rain sensing maxx fans and a generator. Most of these item according to the guide ad no value! but what it does do is add the abilty to sell it fast. People love having solar and Lifpo4 batteries. typically the woman love the water heater :) and the ability to have all the outlets work all the time! There are other things we added but dont add any value but to us. All in all these upgrades seem to get a ton of interest from buyers over the plain jane stuff. I will never get my money back from these upgrade :( but I also get to enjoy them until I sell it. Never think that upgrade actually add value! they just might make it sell faster.

OMG! Nailed it. I have about a dozen people I would love to see this. EXact comments I been running into, "I paid 25k for this" and the new models on the lot are selling for less than she wants and it's 2-1/2 years older. And the people with their jd power post....nuts right now. They doing the what you said adding eqpt that is standard to jack price up..... so I'm just sitting with the money in the bank shaking my head. I'm glad you put this out there to make sure I'm not the crazy one.

I used to work for a small credit union. One of the long time loan officers did not understand (refused to😂😂) that RV values included all standard equipment and you were only supposed to add OPTIONAL equipment. Even afyer being told this multiple times she still checked all the boxes. Fridge ✔, A/C ✔, etc. Had too many overvalued RVs securing the loans. Thankfully didnt cause any real issues other than some qualified for a lower interest rate because of loan to value ratio so credit union lost money that way. Just like you said, I would see people come in with a NADA value that included all standard items (as extras) and they wouldnt believe me that those were not actually included. SMH... So many people would benefit from seeing this video.

Yet another great one Josh. I know, it was your stepdad and Bish's that let let tell the truth so honestly, but it's still gold. I wish every person that wanted to buy or sell an rv watched your videos. Critic - the only thing you left out is you have to make money on the trade in( i say this 16 minutes into the video) People must understand that as much as they hate it. Business is business. I keep thinking, if I only want to deal with Josh and not another salesman is that possible. (ok, you mentioned dealer margin ;) )

Also, if you bought a extended “ESP”. Gap insurance/ tire & wheel protection And you trade in that unit and there’s time left on those protections, the remainder of that you get back in cash (check in mail).. you can use as part of your down payment at some dealers.. we bought a 2022 Thor quantum SE22 back in July (new). 3 mo the in wife hated it.. too small…. So we traded it in.. lost are Azz.. but the Cancelable’s (ESP/Gap/Wheel&Tire) came to $9700 and that came back to us in a check, took 4 weeks. Dealer at 1st said we HAD to use that money for down payment.. which is a lie, if they say this run, not walk out of that dealer..

Solar and an inverter is an example of a modification that should increase the value of your trailer or RV. Even if the next owner is not planning on boondocking, solar to keep the batteries charged is priceless 👌.

Agree but like Josh said, unlikely to get full value of it. It is the kind of thing that you do because it works for your style of camping. Even someone else who might be happy with that mod wont be willing to pay a lot extra for it.

@S S (Sophie's Mom) yes, but if you buy used and do a quality install yourself, you can easily get what you paid for solar out of it. I dont think anyone puts money into a trailer or RV and expects to net 100% of what they invested. I replaced a plastic 10x8 sink with a 20x20 stainless steel one and a high rise facet. I won't get that investment out of it but it will make my trailer stand out against another that is stock at the same price.

On my trade-in, I had installed a 500 W solar system with the lithium batteries. The dealer asked me to remove it as it was not a factory install, and they did not want any liability. So I pulled it out and added it to the new one I was purchasing that had only a 100 W with a 89AH lead acid Win/win

Yep, dealers have to mark it up and have to sell it quickly or pay interest on it. So they may undervalue it for that reason (especially off season) go to your local bank and take a personal note for difference in selling privately if you have to, more positive outcome that trading. Great info nerd!

Sales is such a psychological game. LOL! I generally sell big-ticket items "private party" because I can get more for them that way. It's just a matter of being patient and waiting for the right buyer to come along. When I was truck shopping, the dealerships kept wanting to value my 2011 Ford Escape as a trade-in even though I told them I wasn't trading it in. It was right when used cars were scarce on the lots, so they really wanted it (It was in excellent condition and had a lot of bells and whistles). But even then, the "values" they offered me ranged from $3500-$5000. I sold it for $8000 after I bought my truck and probably could have gotten more but I just wanted it gone. The only time I trade in vehicles is when I think they'll be a hard-sell. Like my '97 Jeep Wrangler. It had 297,000 miles on it. It did not use oil at all and ran great (inline 6 engine), had a new soft top and top-frame, new tires, roll bars, and a sound bar. The passenger and rear seats were in like-new condition because they were almost never sat on and always had seat covers on them. It also had custom built powder-coated rear bumper and front deer-guards. But, as a Minnesota vehicle, it had a rusty frame because of the salted roads. (now I'm super-anal about undercoating my Frontier every fall. Lesson learned. LOL). One fender was also rusted through (I already had a new-in-the-box replacement for it, just hadn't had it painted and installed yet). I had intended to never sell it because I loved it, and I knew there's one area of the frame that tends to rust out quickly on that model of Wrangler, so I had a welder friend add long pieces of heavy plate steel to that part of the frame as an "ounce of prevention." But of course, when circumstances changed and I decided to sell it, that tended to look like a "repair" instead of a protective shield. I knew that would be a problem so I just traded it in for considerably less than it should have been worth as a classic, (especially since I included a large collection of spare parts I had accumulated because certain parts for that model were scarce so whenever I'd see them, I'd snatch them up, lol). It probably went to an auction and sold for $500 "for parts" and whoever bought it had no idea they just bought an engine that had oil changes every 3000 miles for it's entire life so it would probably keep going for a good long time. LOL! Anyhoo...Is that the Michigan store you're wandering around? I see a lot of smaller rigs I might be interested in. I think I need to hop over to the Bish's website and have a peek even though my intention is to buy in the fall of 2023. But if the right deal came along, plans can change. LOL BTW, I was kind of chuckling about that bit about making alterations to the rig. I'm that one buyer that would be MORE interested in that rig, not less. Especially if they kept documentation. Documentation is one of the best selling points, IME. Like my vehicles, I keep a notebook in the glove box that records every oil change, every tire rotation, every filter change, every piece of equipment added, every repair ever made: Date, mileage, and work done. When it comes time to sell, buyers love that. LOL
@sssophiesmom
@sssophiesmom Жыл бұрын
RE: oil changes.... I might do one better than you on tracking stuff. I also track every tank of gas and what my mileage was for each tank. I tracked us all in an Excel spreadsheet along with every Oriole change new tires rotation work done on my vehicle cetera. People think I'm nuts
@randomspirit
@randomspirit Жыл бұрын
@@sssophiesmom LOL! I actually track the gas and fuel economy separate from the maintenance notebook. It's in my $$ account book, with the receipts and start/end miles for every tank of gas. But I prefer the notebook over an Excel spread sheet because it's right there in the truck where I can update it as the work is done...and easy to send along with the vehicle if/when I sell it. Plus, ever since my old PC fried and I lost 20 years worth of book-keeping, I'm back on the old paper in the fire safe method. LOL
@sssophiesmom
@sssophiesmom Жыл бұрын
@@randomspirit LOL... I print out a blank copy of my spreadsheet and keep it in the car to write on each time i get gas. I even track price per gallon. Then when the sheet is filled up I update my spreadsheet and print out new blank copy.😊

Josh, how much affect on trade in value depends on time of year? Like would a dealer value the same RV more in May vs October when the camping season is just beginning vs ending? Well at least in MI/WI? Also I know values can be very different depending on which part of the country you live. At keast for more rare campers.

Great video and information, thank you Josh! When you "blue book" a car, you can usually get 3 values (trade in, private party, retail) but on JD Power (I still call it NADA too) they only give you "Low Retail" and "Average Retail". When I see the word "Retail", is it fair to assume this means 'for sale on a dealer lot'? Where do private party values generally fall with respect to the JD Power "Retail" numbers? Am I just getting too hung up on that one word?? 🧐
@Camp-RiteRV
@Camp-RiteRV Жыл бұрын
There’s no such thing as private party in RV. You’re hung up on the wording. The “low retail” is usually close to trade in value and realistic trade value could be 10-20% back of this number. The “high retail” is exactly that retail. In RV market there is only a wholesale and retail. Same thing for cars, except private party is slightly depreciated vs dealer retail as it’s accepted to pay less to an individual where a dealer needs more mark up.

As usual Josh, good, informative video. Isn’t NADA a lagging indicator? If so, how often are the values updated. In the down market we’re now seeing, the NADA seems a bit high. Also, is there a depreciation factor for a full time living unit? From a camping perspective I’d estimate 1 trip per month would be a good estimate, 2 trips per month would be high use. What do the smart dealers use to prevent negative equity?

I’ve been looking at raptors cyclones etc. thanks…I’m wanting to do some traveling with my 4yr son soon with our rzr to ride different places.

Sorry - when you’re in a used range like that the idea of this brand vs that one goes out the windows. It’s 100% based on the condition of the specific rv It’s not something for which I could offer general advisory

What if my Model or manufacturer isn't listed in the NADA drop down menu's? I have a 2021 Highland Ridge 264RLS. Can't find that at all on that website

If a MFG doesn't produce that model at the start of the season, then it's usually not listed until the following year Try checking one year later like 2022 to see if it's listed there You can also do something like look at the other 2021 models to find something similar to yours. But.. as a courtesy I took a look and I did find the 264RLS listed for 2021 right here: www.jdpower.com/rvs/2021/highland-ridge-rv/m-264rls/6608732/values

how nationally stable are used/trade-in values? Its the worst kept secret that if one is willing to drive to it, they may be able to save thousands when buying new, how does this apply to the used market and trading in ones used RV

Depends greatly on market segment and region at times And highly relative to the current “health” of the dealer’s inventory

Bottom line: what a used RV is worth, or a car, or a camera, or whatever it is that you are selling, is what a buyer is willing to pay for it.

Not all but most dealers want your trade in for as cheap as they can get it. In sales I could make part of my commission off used… if unit “A” was worth $50,000 and “stole” it for $38,000 .. we made $12,000 already off trade, and I’d make 30% off that $12,000 …. Plus my commission I made off sale…. Again, most dealers (not all) want to take that trade in as cheap as possible.. Always research, even look what your exact unit year make model is going for at dealerships in your area. Get offers from least 3 dealers. If their all close you can feel safe it’s a decent trade number. But do your homework .. If it doesn’t feel right.. it’s not walk away ..

Kinda had a situation went to look at another RV or two we have a KZ bh 2020 we only used it five times but don’t like the bunkhouse anyway he showed us 3 different ones two were nope for me the third one I ask about the Murphy bed on that KZ how it rolls up in the storage compartment and in west Texas I was concerned over dirt in the mattress he totally denied it would not show me, from there said need to go back to the office well 8-10 pieces of paper he was pushing me into buy it we ask about other trailers he ignored us continue to write up a contract, we finally left I was upset and wasted time he called me with a deal I never agreed on wanted money down yo hold the camper and payments higher than mine plus he wanted me to finance $2600.00 on another loan for the down payment I said no I am not do all that, I am going to bet he calls next week. Being a woman I think he thought he could push me around! There is no way I want to be payment poor on a RV and not enjoying it. We wanted to shop around not but the first thing.
