How to know you're wasting time in your career? (How I found out)

You hit on some key areas here. It's good that you realized early on into your banking career that going all in for a shot at the corporate ladder wasn't your life's top priority. Even though the potential for career growth was there, your ambition was mismatched to what that path had to offer. No matter how you slice it, we're ultimately selling off large chunks of our life for money, whether its making peanuts or bank whereas the real true currency is time, as it's non-renewable by nature. So it's commendable that you actioned a successful exit strategy when you did. Although we can't guarantee our time here, you were young enough to capitalize on a longer time frame. Also, you have top tier education, polyglot status and creative chops to boot so yes, you've got options in your back pocket like you mentioned. These are outlier abilities, at least in the sense that not many people can tick off all those boxes.

Thanks! It's not an easy to see it, and many people either realize it later in life, or never. Perhaps it's better to never realize you're in the wrong place than realize it late, because that's what causes regret. Sometimes, we're just not willing to admit that we're in the wrong place and make up all sorts of excuses to tell ourselves we can stay put. But it will come to bite us, not just in work, but other areas of life.

Even though it may be repetitive, still a lot of people are stuck in their careers. Sometimes, to make a big change we need to hear the same things more often until it sticks.
