Good job. After changing out the shims there is no need to reassemble the caps and chain to check the clearance. You can simply lay the cam in place and check the new clearance. The cams are not under any load at TDC so it's easy and if there is any further adjustment required you don't need to pull it all apart again. Just lift the cam and change the shim and once it all measures up right go ahead and button it all back up 😀

thanks for this super video! i just did my 09 KX250F, following step by step: got it all up-and-running again (I did have one Intake valve with NO tolerance; it had difficult cold starts since a coupe of weeks). I was able to 'return' the chain tensioner without removing it (yes: did remove the spring); with 2 screwdrivers: you can slowly close it from the top... thanks!!!

This was great. Just watched the whole vid for entertainment purpose. (better learning something than watching just some random movie lol ) I just bought a '09 kx250f (my 1st mx bike) and I would love to work on it myself - eventually. But it's a bit intimidating for now. Your vids are informative and clear and you are real thorough. Damn, wish I had someone like you in the area with their own workshop... (but I'm in South-Africa)

The valves get tight over time as they wear into the head. If you have no clearance, and verified you are at TDC, you'll have to install a thinner shim and repeat the process. At a min, put in a shim that gives you max spec clearance, and you may find yourself in spec.

Hi Matthew I just wanted to ask. What are some good mods or absolute must haves for this engine type (04-05 kxf, 04-06 rmz) for this motor to run reliable ? I've got one I've done a new lower end on and want it to last me as long as I can and not have it lock up on me when I'm trail riding near a cliff.. thank you!!

Great video! However, it should be pointed out that 28 pins on the chain should be in between the 9 o’clock exhaust mark and the 3 o’clock intake mark.

This video is very good. The only thing I wish you included was links to buy all of the parts and supplies I need to do this, I just picked up an 07 KX250F and it’s quite difficult to start, has a ticking in the top end when started even know the top end and valves were replaced, and also will not idle without choke so I’ll be rebuilding the carb too. I need the torque wrench, hondabond, and whatever else you used.

$1500 and we are located near Chicago. It needs graphics, one radiator, chain & sprockets, fork seals, ign coil, etc.

I have a 2009 250f and with hot cams the intake will not allow the engine to make a full revolution stock cams it’s fin but the marks on the intake cam have the lobes facing more towards the head but the engine will spin without contacting anything.

Great video. We just purchased an old beater '05 kxf250. The seller said it is running fine but will need some maintenance attention. Our intent is to play with it then do lots over the winter. This is our first performance 4 cycle bike. (not my first 4c tho). So been watching a couple of your videos to get the feel for how these are put together and how they come apart. Well done Matt. ;) Will be checking the valves after we get a few casual rides in. Will be shimming them to maximum clearance. As the bike runs and the valves wear, they go deeper into the seats. Meaning the cam to bucket spacing will get smaller. The second bike I am looking at is an RMZ250. It looks near identical to the KXF, except it is yellow instead of green. So question -- are the engines pretty much the same thru n thru? I ask because the RMZ is seized so will be doing a complete tear down on that one to figure out what the problem is.

That sucks. I will be uploading a top & bottom end rebuild video on this same bike this week. The case shifter detent pin snapped and cases needed to be replaced. Went ahead and installed new piston, rings, cam chain, etc..

When doing the chain tensioner I just unscrewed the clamp on the inlet to the engine and pull the carb out of the black rubber inlet and it allows you to push your carb out of the way instead of taking it off👍

good video but I disagree with one thing. Buying shims individually costs more as well as delays the job. The kits are not priced bad, especially if you do a lot of this work. What I have found is that even as I use shims for different jobs I am also replacing the shims with ones I have pulled out of these different jobs. Once in a great while I may get low on a common size and will order a few individual ones. If you do this work there is one kit that fits all the Japanese 250s and the same for the 450's. KTM also has their own size if you work on them. Hot Cams makes these Kits and well as Pro X and a few others. Avoid Cheap Shims? They don't withstand the wear. and as always ….braaaaap!

Just got this done. Had one bad intake valve. All i can say and I can’t express this enough but run lead addictive to your fuel on these four strokes! It will Cut this bullshit out!!

Great vid and channel lots of help, had a question I’m checking my clearance and on both exhaust I can’t get the thinnest gauge thru, now do I just take the shim back to standard clearance or do I have a bigger problem?. Oh and it’s an 09 kx250f

Your valves are starting to wear. Reshim them and check to see if they move after 1-2hrs of riding.

another question. I am going to change my intake valves and springs to s.s. would it cause a problem if I only change the intake valves to s.s. and tougher springs? my exhaust valves never need shimming. would this make motor unbalanced?

hey i have a question, i know your vids old but i have a problem with my 06 kx 250f she starts first crank cold but when hot sometimes she dosent start. Also i hear like a ticking noise in the motor just did oil and filter change,air filter cleaned also. could it be the valves ?? thank you very much

hi, matt just bought a kfx250 2006, it had the top end done 3 months ago and has not been used since when i come to start it is a pain in the butt, if/when it starts oil comes out of the breather hose is that normal and then the bike just cuts out. any suggestions cheers

great video. I have the exact same bike.my first four stroke. I checked valves and all need shimming.i did the math and shimmed all values. but my left intake was tight. I shimmed it to spec as if it was at zero. after shimming my left intake is still at zero. what do I do now? new valves?

Keep reducing shim thickness until you get clearance. Recheck after 1 hr of ride time. If valves get tight again quickly, time for a valve job.

It won't sit correctly w/o a shim. Go buy some thinner shims and recheck lash.

How can you do all that without adding oil during re assembly? That is a crime!!!! Those parts will run dry for a few seconds when you start that engine and that will put a lot of extra and unnecessary wear on the components.

@@ShredStudios add assembly grease to the cam wheel shafts and add a little oil to the parts you remove before reinstalling and you should be good

I shoot for middle to high end of spec since valves get tighter over time. Less adjusting this way.

Question. So my buddy gave me his bike to rebuild, which I did, now I’m stuck on valve shimming, the valves didn’t come with shims but I have a shim kit from PROX, I don’t wanna chase shims so how do I know which ones to use? (Ex. 2.00mm, 2.45mm)

Hi Matt. I have just done valve shims on rmz250 06 and am setting the timing, problem is the dots on cams don't line up perfectly with casing edge 9, 12, & 3 oclock. with the right hand bottom crank mark lined up, and the correct number of teeth between the cam dots, the dot on the ex valve is slightly above casing and inlet in equally below casing. if I shift it all 1 tooth forward then the dot on ex cam is slightly below the casing and the inlet dot equally above the casing. should cam dots line up perfect like picture in manual, How do I check for cam chain stretch.

@MatthewMCRepair As I mentioned, great vid :) Now I know you get a lot of questions :D my Kawa '09 KX250F creeps forward in gear with clutch pulled. (It's my 1st mx type bike) Is this normal? since you know WAY more than I do with these bikes. If I rev it like twice before stopping with brakes it tends to be o.k. Doesn't feel right since I have other bikes and they don't do that....

Your timing is most likely off. You tried to kick start it with all your weight on the kicker? If the motor locked up there is good chance you just bent your valves.

Gary, what is the temperature you try starting it in? And do you give it gas when trying to start it? Because you are not suppose to with fuel injection

It should slide in with a slight drag. You may have to fight with the thinner gauges since they are flimsy.

you probably have you're top dead center off. At least on honda's you have one inspection window on the transmission side and one on the cam so check both. The marks on the cams are lines wich should be parallel with the cylinder head. Had the same problem on my bike.

Every bike will have different shim thicknesses, so don't go with what you see in the video. Or are you asking for part numbers? I buy them individually from RMatv under Pro X brand.

Hey Matt.. I just recently bought an 09 kx250f and there's a bit of top end noise.. I took it to a local shop and they said it could be piston slap or valves.. Is there any way to determine what it is without getting in and looking at it?

nate hepler You can take a screwdriver to your ear or a stethoscope to try and determine the area where the noise is coming from. Ok thanks Matt.. I appreciate it.. Is there a noticeable difference whether it's the valves or piston.. Like for instance I know it's hard to start the bike when warm if valves are out of spec sometimes.. The bike starts first kick but is relatively hard to start when hot

Victor Cruz more than likely valves hitting the top of your piston. double check timing and if tjat aint it youre gonna have to re shim it. one of the valves is too far into the cylinder

Don't remember. I usually use Honda HP4 10w40 since it is available locally.

Matt, I am desperate, I have an 11 kx250, it wont start when cold. It will pop start instantly. Once it's warmed up it starts fine. The local Kaw dealer here in Massachusetts says it starts in two kicks when i bring it in (twice), I feel foolish. I have an old 01 YZ 426 I can start up with ease (I don't think it's my lack of kicking). Any comments for me? I feel like i want to sell the bike, but the thing is mint, low low hours. I would verify that the hot start plunger in carb is working properly. Next, I would tune the fuel screw ("How-To: 4 Stroke MX Fuel Screw Adjustment YZF CRF KXF RMZ FCR "). I like to twist the throttle once really fast (only when cold) to give the motor a shot of fuel from acc pump. That usually results in a quick fire up.

very good, i will check that out. it's funny, the mechanic at the kaw dealer said keep your hand off the throttle (like, don't turn it). I will try these tips, it kills me that i can't start it. Thanks!

MatthewMCRepair Matt, also, I'm a bit ignorant, how does the carb blast (quick turning the throttle) fuel, isn't this EFI?? I thought the crank has to be turning for fuel to flow? Thanks again.

Well this is getting interesting, when I got home from work I gave the throttle a twist and sure enough it started after 5 or 6 kicks. I'm just baffled. I then took it for a spin. Got a bit of mud so I pressure washed it. About an hour later I couldn't get it to fire. And it took me 3 times pop starting to fire it. Oh well, I'll eventually get it figured out! i got an kx250f -04 and i tried to do this mysef but when i assembled it wont kick... tha kick get stuck and cant kick it, i know why cous the cam lobe is touching the cup and wont go past it... what should i do ?

There is a guide on crank sprocket to prevent chain falling off.

how tight should the spark plug be because my manual says turn 1/8 and i don't know what that means?

Just snug it up. They are referring 1/8 turn after the plug is seated all the way.

I have the same bike, KX250f 2006 and it seems I am losing it. I refilled my bike before my last ride to perfect amount and now I am low again. Would that be a valve problem? Can someone please explain what needs to be fixed or changed. Thanks

well there is a lot of smoke and sometimes it is blue i believe.

I have the same bike it will kick but won't start, Its getting fuel and spark but won't start. Any suggestions?

+Jacob Layne How have you determined it is getting fuel? Is the spark plug coming out wet? It wouldn't be a bad idea to put a new plug in (maybe it's fouled).

The plug did have fuel on it when I pulled it out but its a brand new plug.

I pulled the carb and cranked the throttle and fuel is coming out of the needle

+Jacob Layne OK, fuel is coming out of the accelerator pump. Let's back up for a minute, what happened that all of a sudden is stopped running? Was it running fine the other day? Has it been sitting? Did you take it apart and now won't start? Give me some more details.

Im trying to time a 09 kx250f when line up the dots my exhaust cam is almost facing up then it hits on a valve or something and stops wont turn over but the dots are perfect. Can anyone help me?

Is it just me, or do I hear a faint knock? Is this the way the bike is supposed to sound? My son just acquired a 2017 KX250F, sounds the same with that slight tap or knock. This is the first dirtbike in the house. His bike rides fine otherwise. Starts in 2 kicks.

Maybe it was mentioned already but you lose torque when using a extension. There's a formula to use when doing that

Why did you measure in inches? Now you have to convert the measurements of the shims from millimeters to inches. And why does it still matter when every 0.5mm÷25.4=0.002in? You also never said that 25.4 is inches or centimeters.

Halo Tank Because I deal with english units on a daily basis and easier for me. I'd rather everyone use the metric system. I didn't cover conversions because we all learned that in grade school.

MatthewMCRepair Ok man your preference it's just more work since your caliper isn't metric. After all most dirt bikes are metric since there Japanese besides KTM. I have a problem with my bike and I think it's the shims. We have to bump to start it and once it's on and you give it throttle it kind of loses power. I also hear a popping in the crankshaft. What is your opinion? It has oil change, clean carbhoreator, new spark plug that's gapped, clean air filter. The oil filter had some metal specs in it. Don't know why. There like sand grain size.

Halo Tank What color where the metal specs? Magnetic or not? Have you tried removing the stator cover and checking the oil screen? Also, do you have a video of this thing running? Crankshaft popping? As in a rod knock?
