I decided at the ripe 'ol age of 64 to learn how to ice skate. I bought a pair of Jackson Ultima and after having the blades sharpened, I baked the skates at home myself. I just completed the basic level one class and I'm looking to continue to move up. I found your video to be of great help, especially with tying the laces up the hooks! Thanks a bunch.

I'm an adult beginner starting ice skating in my 20s and I just purchased the Jackson Mystique with Mark II blades. Tried them on the ice today and having your own pair of skates does make a big difference (as long as they're cared for and maintained well). This video showed me how to properly lace my skates without applying too much pressure and avoidng the crushed toes feeling I normally experience during a skate session. First time I've had NO PAIN after my skate session (the insides of my skates are cushioned too). Thank you so much!

Great video! I would add one more step, for safety reasons, especially as skaters advance in skills. You pointed out that blades can catch on large loops of the final bow tie, but any loop big enough to admit the toe or the heel of the blade could cause a problem when skating involves close feet. To prevent any possibility of the blade catching a loop of the laces, wrap the loops around the hooks so that they are not accessible. This works better than trying to tuck the bunny ears into the boot, because those tucked loops always seem to work their way out of hiding. Alternatively, one could use boot covers to hide the laces (an additional expense) or wear skating pants that are long enough and wide enough to pull down over the laces.

My experience with skating (in Jacksons), if I have to retie my skates multiple times, and have to have to lace my laces back down the skate a few notches, that's a good indicator that my skates are breaking down. I'm one of those skaters that tends to break down my skates much more from the inside than the outside.
@lisazitzmann920
@lisazitzmann920 Ай бұрын
Just want to add to this- if you’re noticing you beed to retie your laces during your session, you shoukd change your laces. Especially with Edeas, and some Risports, the sides of the boot are meant to remain fixed, and all if the flex comes from the tongue and laces. So, if you’re having to tighten your laces, it means you are now going to try to “take them with you” meaning, take the sides of the boots with you when you bend, as you do with traditional leather skates. With Edea, laces should be changed every 4-6 weeks, and the sides of the boots should never crease. With most models of Jackson and Reidell, however, the boots aren’t broken in UNTIL they form a crease, although now days they often have a flex notch, allowing the skater to bend to some extent right away before the boots are broken in.
@janetslater129

I did do that with my previous skates, and I was still having to retie them. I still ended up needing new skates, and I tend to break my skates down from the inside.

Those boot levels are meant gor children. Adults, even beginners, need to start out with the mid to high level of support. For Edea, that means maybe Chorus if you’re less than 130lbs, otherwise go with Concerto or Ice Fly. For Risport, I suggest Royal Pro or Prime, for Jackson, nothing lower than Freestyle, and for Riedell, you’ll want at least Motion, or higher, but ge careful going too stiff with Reidell, as they will impede your progress and the break in can be very painful. It’s not teally possible to overboot in Edea or Risport, but there is certainly a risk to underboot for adults in each brand, if they rely on the size chart. They shouldnt even make most of those boots in anything higher than a size 4 or 240.

@lisazitzmann920
@lisazitzmann920 Ай бұрын
If you are finding yourself needing to lace your Edeas crazy tightly, you need to change your laces much more often. When you tie them tight, you are going to cause the sides of the boots to flex with your ankle when you bend, instead of remaining stable like they’re meant to. And, unlike traditional leather boots that are meant to act like a stronger second skin and move with your ankle when you flex, Edea boots have plastic reinforcements inside between the outer leather, and interior memory foam and lining, which is meant to hold it’s form and if you continue to tie them tighter, you will eventually break that plastic and destroy your boots, like what happened to Evgenia Medvedeva, forcing her to withdraw from the European Championships.

Hello! My name is Pedro. I am loving your KZbin Chanel ! I am from Brazil and here we don’t have ice rinks 😞. I fell really sad because I never had the opportunity to practice figure skating. I complete love the pairs and the ice dance competition. Now I decided to buy the artistic inline frame by Roll Line Linea. I am really exited about it because I can simulate the ice skating using this frame at least. I already have 36 years old but I hope to learn at least double jumps. But I am confused about the boots. I bought an Risport RF3 pro black size 290. But this boot looks very open at the top. Is this normal? I am confused if I bought the right size. I sent an video with the boots moving from left to right. Is normal this type of moviment? Or the boot is not supporting my foot properly? Sorry for so many questions. I hope to decide about boot size very soon and mount my new skate to practice your teachings . Thank you very much for your attention .

@JustMe-12345
@JustMe-12345 9 ай бұрын
You mean leaving enough space on top of the skates that allows you to bend? NO. Edea are made just for that and still manage to give you support. The other brands also use that part to hold you in. It could be that your shoe is too hard for you/your skill level. If that is not the case... you could tie it slightly less tight (just slightly), it should still give you plenty support. Another option is this: Its the way it was explained to me at the pro-shop i got them. Do everything as she said for the Jackson, but dont go over-under, but go under-over (like you would tie eg hiking boots) That way it allows for a bit more movenent. I deliberately use it that way, and after wearing them for over a season, they are starting to get softer, so if i feel like they are too soft i can switch to the over-under. The difference between the 2 ways is how firm it holds it... so it makes sense that if your skills are a bit lower in the beginning and the new shoe really firm, you can (and maybe should) allow for more movement in the laces. Later when you get better and the shoe gets softer, switch to the other one to keep your foot secure and stay safe and comfortable.

@ACL7211
@ACL7211 3 жыл бұрын
How long they last depends on what skills you're doing and how often you skate. Four years is a long time. Your coach should tell you when it is time to buy new ones, but having to constantly fix your laces is one sign. You may also notice less ankle support. Sounds like you are long over due for new skates.

@lisazitzmann920
@lisazitzmann920 Ай бұрын
Yes, there is plastic reinforcements in Edeas that are meant to stay rigid in place and not move with your ankle when you bend, like traditional leather skates. If you tie your Edeas too tight, you will force the sides of the boot to move with your ankle when you bend, causing that plastic to deform or break. If you feel you need more support in your Edeas, you need to change your laces more often. When I wore Ice Fly, I had to change laces every 6 weeks or so. I could tell it was time because I would feel the need to retie them during my sessions. Ultimately, though, Edeas are not for me, as I have very skinny, weak ankles and miss the feeling of the traditional leather boots tied snugly around my ankles and supporting me as I flex. Edeas are great for a lot of skaters but you must have perfect alignment when taking off and landing jumps, making sure to always keep your hips, knees, ankles and toes aligned so you flex straight forward, with the heal locked in, without relying on the sides of the boot

I suppose some child outgrew them before they got the boot order filled and they sat in the closet for a few years, because those boots are no longer made. Hi Sounds like you could be over tightening, and squashing the tendons across the top of your foot. Try lacing from outside to inside ( lace goes through the lace holes from the outside of the lace holes to the inside. ) this will allow you to tighten firmly and hold without over tightening. Also it depends on the fitting in the boots you have, if the length and width are correct. Try re lacing and not over tightening first. ⛸

The portion of the skate lacing that needs to be properly snug is at the flexion on your ankle, about where she did the anchoring half-knot, and the lowest/first hook. The higher hooks should be snug enough to hold the boot on, but they don't have to be tight and really should not be cranked tightly. You need to be able to flex your ankles when you bend your knees. The crossed lacing over the mid-foot and the toes does not have to be tight and should definitely not be so tight that it causes foot cramping or pain. There is an artery on the top of your foot that provides blood flow to your forefoot. Lacing over the mid-foot needs to hold the skate on your foot, without impeding the circulation. You should not be able to slide your foot around in the skate, even if the lacing is loose over your toes. If so, the skates are probably the wrong size length or width for your foot. Skates should generally be about a size smaller than street shoes. The boot should be like a glove or a sock over the foot, not loose and not pinchy-tight. Best thing is to have an experienced skate fitter find the right skates for you, if you can, and have them adjust the boots as needed (punch out for a bunion, for example). If you use orthotics in your street shoes, you should use similar orthotics in your skate boots. That definitely improves skating technique and comfort. HTH

@SNCNJCsMom the part around the ankle and about 1-2 eyelets on lower is probably where i tie them too much. It either hurts after a few minutes or it goes completely numb. Problem is when i did a class 10years ago the trainer tied the skates tight all the way so i couldn't really bend in the skate at all. It hurt too but i kinda got used to the "stability " and have problems balancing when the skates are a bit more loose. Other than that i think the fit of the boot is fine. I can wiggle my toes a bit bit other than that the boot is snug

do you think disport tongue is a lot stiffer than the other two?

from personal experience, there doesn’t seem to be any significant experience between the stiffness of edea, jackson, and risport tongues. however, i really love risport tongues since they’re thicker with more padding so that deep knee bends are a lot more comfortable.

The tongue of the boot bites right at my inner ankle and my bunions are growing it's very painful 😖, I'm DIY-ing my own padding but I'm still figuring out the best setup that won't be so bulky.

I totally recommend getting Bunga Pads Lace Bite sleeve! They help a ton :) and if you're having issues with ankle pain (or even if you're not specifically struggling with it) the Bunga Pads gel sleeves make wearing new boots very comfortable! Although I know some solutions to lace bite and ankle pain, my bunions are definitely still begging for help😭 if you find a padding that works for your bunions, please let me in on the secret! 🥰

Edea and Risport should be laced from the outside, in. I can’t believe you’re putting out this entire video with the boots laced incorrectly. I’m glad i watched the entire thing before continuing to recommend this video to parents. What a shame, because it would be a great resource, otherwise. Is there a reason you don’t follow Edea’s recommendations for lacing, or was this just an oversight?

The Edea Overture is laced incorrectly. Please refer to Edea's manual for how to insert the laces and how to lace the skates.

man i hate how Edeas left my ankles super loose and collapsing on outside edges, it's like you have no good option, you either leave the top loose to have a nice knee bent and be on top of the ball of your foot but feel like you ankle are wobbly as hell or you tight it up enough to feel that your ankles are supported but them you have no knee action what so ever and feel like you're being pushed to you heels -_- that's why i switched to Risports

I would recommend trying to buy new skate laces that are longer and relacing your skates. Its a little bit of a pain to do, but it is worth it.
