Staying humble, owning our mistakes, always learning, love it. Can apply this to just about anything in life! Even with the brief hover, the landing still looked nice and buttery!

I wish more of the working world was like this. Instead of jumping to immediate blame, accept that mistakes happen (no matter how small), learn from them, and be better next time. If all of the working world was like this EVERYTHING would be better, we've had a safer world, with better made products because people wouldn't be SCARED of admitting a mistake was made.

@@repatch43 For sure. It says a lot about a person or a company or an industry when honesty and transparency are encouraged. Joe could have easily re-recorded this until he had a “perfect” landing, but the fact he didn’t and showed us he’s human is refreshing.

Much better landing soft than hard. Often have I been on planes smacking a Boing 737-300 into the runway. I guess the gear has much more strength/strain margin on a small plane than on a big one. But still I wonder if there are strain gauges monitoring things and how often things have to replaced because of these smack down landings and why do they occur so often ? If there are wind gusts, does it automatically mean that high vertical landing speeds are inevitable and is it just how it is with "small" planes ? Also rolling during landing because of crosswinds, how much roll and yaw can be handled by the landing gear (or wing clearance), before skidding or other non-linear instabilities ? Those are the thoughts going through my engineering mind while flying on holidays.. 🤔🤨

I mean, this just shows the level of perfectionism you strive for at your job. Your company's openness is really great. It would probably also be a great project to record more of these videos for training purposes. If anything recording in this detail would be detrimental to the pilots in case someone would severely mess up rather than bad for the company. Especially those videos with small errors and room for some improvement would probably be very good training material for new pilots.

I loved this, thanks Captain Joe. I'm a student pilot and my first few landings were characterised by flaring too high and pulling back too aggressively! Thankfully, via a patient FI, I am improving. It takes a while to realise that the controls are very light touch, especially when you get near the concrete and you have to overcome that instinct to pull the nose up 😊

Captain Joe, I get what you did wrong, but from a spotter's point of view, that landing was beautiful! A very graceful flare, and a buttery smooth touch. Although I'm not a pilot, I see many 747 touchdowns every night, and many pilots seem to thunk the airplane down right on the aiming point. In this video, the viewer cannot see if the plane touched down in the touchdown zone, so it's impossible for us to see if you missed it or not. Regardless, it was a nice landing, and a nice informative video, and I enjoyed it. Thanks, Joe!

Hi Joe, this great video raised a question on my side : the noise level inside the cockpit seems extremely low. Is it because of some noise-cancelling tech or is the cockpit actually somewhat quieter than the cabin? Thank you in advance!
@CtFshd1812
@CtFshd1812 2 жыл бұрын
In most planes with wing/rear mounted engines, the cockpit is usually the quietest place. Reasons being that the engine's main noise is due to the thrust going rearward, and hence making the cockpit the farthest from the source of the noise. In fact on the A380 when it first came out, there were some concerns that the pilots could not hear the engines well enough due to a combination of quieter engines and better/modern insulation and the sheer size of the jet.
@LenweSaralonde
@LenweSaralonde 2 жыл бұрын
I think they probably recorded the audio from the headsets and the ambiance audio in 2 separate tracks so it's easier when editing the video to reduce the cockpit noise. In addition, when the microphone is placed very close to the mouth of the person speaking, the ambiance sound level is very low compared to the voice level so it's easy to reduce the ambiant noise this way using a single microphone and track. Here are 2 videos I recorded in a plane (sorry French :p), the first one has audio recorded from the camera built-in microphone in an A380, there is a lot of noise : kzbin.info/www/bejne/opzFnWZ3p56Br7M In this other video recorded in an A330, we use a separate microphone so the noise level is significantly reduced : kzbin.info/www/bejne/bnumh5ipis2lp7M

Not 100% sure, but I believe the gate guidance lights are aligned with the captain's seat, not the gate centreline. Anyway, as a former ground engineering, that's what I've found when preparing the gate for aircraft arrival... That is, the nosewheels will track the centreline when the indications the captain is getting shows "centered".

In my 21 years flying the 747-122, 747-SP, and finally the 747-422, I averaged about 3.5 landings a month. It's hard to put it down exactly where you want every time. But, being stable, on the numbers greatly improves your chance of a great landing. Better a little long, than a little short.
