Can use the same compass width to make 60 degree marks on the circumference, use every other one for 120 degrees.

You can also make an equal sided (equilateral) triangle and with that you've got your 120 degrees at any of the outer corners, you get two extra for free. For the inner corners we are a little short on degrees so you only get 60 degrees at each of the inner corners. But we are missing the point of the three legged stand, that is, that it is very stable, it never rocks, It is always the needed and sufficient proof that you only need it's three leg ends (points) to define a flat plane. People throughout the world who lived on dirt floors used tables and stools with three legs so they wouldn't rock on the often uneven floor. So I'm thankful to Doug for his brilliant idea of the three legged stand or table which saves us from having to shim one of the legs on them to keep it from rocking.
