How To Layout Herringbone Wall Tile Shower | Columbia MO

I am going to show you how to layout herringbone wall tile shower.
Your friendly neighborhood tile guy with what I hope will be a helpful video if you’re planning a herringbone tile installation. This video is for layout and planning of a herringbone installation.
The first thing we do is layout an area that is larger than the area to be tiled. We do this so that we can find where the cuts on the tile will look the best. We want to layout the horizontal section of all walls continuously as well as the height of the installation.
Don’t factor any cutoff on the tile for corners. Tile should wrap inside corners such that they appear continuous. The angles in the corner should line up with each other. It’s best to work from one corner to the next to keep the pattern flowing. Trying to work towards the corner on each wall will lead to bad things happening.
The center of a herringbone pattern is not at the points of the tile. If you draw a straight line between the two sets of points the center of the pattern is the halfway point between the two lines. This gives you equal cuts on each end of the pattern.

Nice job. I notice on all,herringbone videos. No one mentions how important it is to make sure you’re level at the bottom. Be it on a counter top,or bath tub. If you’re not level,it throws the whole job off. Also need plumb walls

You are absolutely correct. If everything isn’t perfectly flat, level and plumb you’re not going to get the corner wrap correctly. Herringbone is a very difficult pattern. Most people don’t realize the complexity of this pattern until they hire the wrong installer.

No one ever shows the hard part of herringbone which is trying it on an un level surface such as a tubsurround, no tubs are even hell most shower bases aint perfect either even the preformed ones like schluter. I been laying tile for 9 years and I hate herringbone because I was never taught how to lay it in showers, thank God I haven't been asked to do one yet. I'd pay good money to be taught the correct way. Floors are a cake walk in herringbone but walls are a different world

Don’t forget to deduct the thickness of your tile for your back wall cuts so that the side wall cuts match the grout joints

I was told there would be no math. What we did here was to use each cutoff and flush them together at the corner. The corner is empty, we used backerrod and siliconed the joint.

In your next alike this video make sure you explain that there is more to laying complex patterns that need to connect properly at the corners of the walls to follow the pattern, make sure you explain that all corner walls need to be prepped level via not dry pack but wet screeds so they can be level. If the walls are not level then you can say bye bye to the whole job... Customers need to understand that their framers used all warped 2x4" and add the shower pan inconsistency it creates on the bottom to that, its a perfect mixture for failure even for a very good and detailed tile guy who never had experience with pattern connecting tile on a large project. the worst ever corner walls I had to mud in order to get everything level was almost 1-1/2" because thats how bad the framing was at the ceiling... Lucky me it was 2x2 hexagonal sheet pattern so I didnt had to prep level all the way to the edge of the shower curb and I just feathered to zero, if it was big hexagonal tile I would of had to prep level all the way to the shower curb and then charge extra for prepping/feathering down the drywall to zero. Customers need to understand why we are charging high sometimes, everybody wants the magazine look in their bathrooms and pay as if im installing 4x4 small commercial tiles lol... We just saw a pretty decent size house that wants to do the whole house French pattern marble "mudset installation" and guess what they said? I'm on a budget I cant afford to pay more than $4 per sqft for the installation, hard pass for me on this one. Its like year 2008 all over again...

What happens if you haven’t the area to lay the tiles down, as most houses isn’t big enough!!!!

A standard tub is roughly 12’ around counting all walls. A 5’x12’ area is what is needed in most cases. I would find an area large enough or come up with an alternative method that works. We always try to mathematically figure the job, then double check ourselves with a stacked layout. The math is always off a little, but if I were to install a large area I would feel confident enough to trust my math.

Also how much do you charge to allow all this time and how long did it take you start to finish

I charge enough to take my time to install the project. More difficult installations take longer to calculate. I’m not the cheapest guy in my area by a long shot. If someone doesn’t want to pay me I just go on to the next project.
