When I start learning a language, I watch a lot of videos in that language first. That first step will make me fall in love with the language and I'll enjoy learning it

Great tips! Starting with pronunciation is a very smart move, this is the most natural way to start learning a language (this is how we learn our native languages)

What a fantastic and thorough video, thanks for sharing! I'm trying to get my Spanish from B1 to B2 this year and it's definitely challenging, but whenever I notice even small improvements in my speaking or listening comprehension I feel over the moon haha finding cause to celebrate the small things in language learning has been so motivating for me.

Can I ask which resource you use for studying Spanish? I try to get started with it but feel kinda lost on which website/ app/ book or so😅

Wow! A no nonsense description from zero to fluency and beyond. More or less the path I'm on but without the short detours I took.

I agree with all your points in this video. Thank you. One thing that helped me tremendously was learning how pronunciation actually works. I bought the student and teacher book of clear speech by Judy B. Gilbert, and I finally have an understanding of how sounds work in languages. The book was written for teachers with students that speak all sorts of languages. I didn’t understand how critical syllables are, i.e. why a Spanish speaker will add e to the word school when pronouncing it. Also, now when reading my Korean pronunciation book I understand better why they have equal loudness on all syllables of a word but higher pitch on the first syllable. Also when repeatedly listening comprehensive audio you can be attentive to the right cues. The importance of mastering sounds can’t be overstated. When you have the chance I highly recommend to get those books, you get 1 year access to the audio files from Cambridge LMS. The teacher book shows why things work and it has the answers key, the student book is the exercises and online audio access. This knowledge will help in self-studying any language. It can clearly be done without studying this but it makes language learning more effective.

Thanks for this video, I have a high level in Italian, and now I've decided to learn French and I want to learn as much as possible during summer before school starts because it becomes a little bit more difficult to learn languages while I'm in school

To learn a new language you have to follow a method similar to institutes: A1, A2, B1, B2 etc. Focusing on grammar more than learning new words. The other thing are complements

Nice vid, and good points. The problem with the apps is that they are for people that are at the INTERMEDIATE level. To start you only need to know FIVE KINDS of words, and the names of two objects. At this stage we are acquiring vocabulary. All this can be learned over coffee at Starbucks, and you will be able to have a simple conversation with someone who knows what you do. And please no TRANSLATING "Don't memorize... recognize."

Damn!!! B2 is actually a great level to be at right?? I generally stop learning a language actively at B2 Level. At this level, I just try to consume native content like books and tv shows.

Hi Mari, I love your videos 💖 I’m trying to improve my English, but my main problem with language learning is that I don’t know which topics I should talk about with my language exchange partner’s, most of the times we don’t have a lot in common, do you have any tips? 🥺

Nice video! When you first said that it is important to practice sounds, I wasn't sure if I was doing that already but then I noticed that my language teachers always made me learn them. Do you think it is easier to learn a language with a teacher? Or do you prefer to study alone.

Do learn to pronounce individual letters or not and learn words instead, I'm confused as you say one thing and then say the other.
