How to Learn a Language From Scratch | The First Week of Learning a New Language

In today's video, I'm going over how to learn a new language from scratch. I take you through what I would do in the first week of learning a new language, and I decided to try French! This isn't one of those "learn a new language in a week" videos, instead, I'm giving you a schedule to try in your first week to create a solid foundation for your language learning routine. These language learning methods include listening, pronunciation practice, vocabulary practice, and basic conjugations. Don't feel pressured to understand a lot in your first week, language learning is a life-long process! There's no rush at all and don't let comparison kill your motivation.
To repeat my disclaimer, I am NOT going to continue learning French. I simply started learning it for this video to show you how I would approach learning a new language. I still want to focus only on Italian.
Here's a link to the French book I was using in the video: amzn.to/38vQgq9
Language Learning University (which makes the book I showed in this video) also has books in other languages! If you're studying German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, French, or Japanese, check out their other options here: amzn.to/3guS3hP

I should have added this to my other comment but the first thing when you start learning French is to understand how to read in French. As Shea said, pronunciation is hard so understand what we pronounce and don't pronounce right away. Then work on pronunciation, everyday practice is key. Bonne chance 🍀

You know, I am a native French speaker, and I have noticed that I rarely notice if anyone butchers the language or any other language I speak, because my brain is focusing on what the person infront of me is saying and not how he/she is saying it. Great Video by the way.

Well that's really good to know! I think I'm just very sensitive to it because Americans usually get a lot of hate for the way they pronounce other languages. Sure, some people just don't even try, but I personally try to echo the nice sounds of the language I'm trying to learn. Americans really can mess things up 😂😂😂

I have been learning Spanish for a bit, and I decide to focus on Spanish for all of 2021. I dabbled in Italian last year. I felt that the pronunciation was a bit difficult due to letter combinations change the sound, but the rhythm of the language is more natural to me than Spanish. I have actually had people tell me I speak Spanish like an Italian. Haha. Italian is on my list for next year.

i've studied both french and italian and i spent a lot more time focusing on my pronunciation and listening to french. french is more monotone and the consonant sounds are softer. once you get over that a lot of endings aren't pronounced and the quirks of its spellings, its ok. you just have to spend a lot of time brushing up pronunciation any stage of french study. having spanish and italian background will help your french study for sure! also it helps me a lot to listen to things slow and fast speeds and to stop recordings to listen. listening to french does take a lot of work over time especially when french is spoken so fast & casually and i've studied for a few years but it is really satisfying when you start hearing it! girl its all good your pronunciation is pretty good for just starting! the spoken language people smash things together and drop syllables and its a little confusing but u get used to it! keep up the good work! i hope to return to studying italian one day in the future but right now i feel passionate about french as you do for italian! ♥️ i think your advice was very good and a good way to start!

Shea - thank you for this video. a daily step by step is so helpful when you have nooooo idea where to start. remembering this video for the next time I'd like to try a new language. I love the idea that your first day is spent listening to the music - such a great way to get a sense of culture different from your own

I seriously think learning a new language is really valuable and you don't have to commit a lot of time to it if you don't want to, it can just be a way to challenge yourself. I'm glad you really enjoyed it and found it helpful or impactful in some way. Even just listening to music in other languages is really fun!

Hey Shea! My mindset on French is depends on the person who is actually learning it. It is a mindset of what is hard or easy for them personally. If you are learning Italian (like I am now, yippie) you should try adding on Spanish just for a fun to see if you would like it. I am having a great time learning my italian . It is part of my challenge for the year. I am doing an add 1 challenge every month. So this month Italian next maybe German , or Portuguese and then in the fall I will be doing French. We shall see! Keep it up! Love your channel!!!! So helplful again

Back in secondary school (I’m in the UK) I had french teacher who was Arabic and his french was very difficult to understand. I never understood anything and even did my assessments in English. But I found it very easy to acquire Spanish and I’m still doing it in sixth form for a-level. I’m attempting to learn french now and improving my Spanish skills so hopefully I’ll at least learn conversational french in a few months time.

Some great ideas here in particular listening to French music. I learned French after discovering music by Loïc Nottet (he’s Belgian but his first language is French and although he primarily sings in English all his interviews are in French and I wanted to understand what he was saying!) He has a beautiful French song called Mr/ mdm which is easy enough to translate. Also Indila’s Dernière Danse and Love Story and SOS are really beautiful French songs fairly easy to follow along with and hearing the French sounds in the early days is so important. Also just don’t give up. I went for a year of barely understanding anything. Learning the French sounds and just being able to introduce myself in French! That’s ok but it’s important to not lose interest. Keep ploughing on and you will eventually get there. Cyprien is a brilliant KZbinr who does really sweet, funny videos in French. Also i found reading in the language you are learning really helps. Even if you don’t yet understand most of the individual words, your mind can pick bits out and formulate the rough story line if it’s simple enough. The grammar sort of gets absorbed. I started with Short Stories in French by Olly Richards. But basically the key is to just go have fun and keep going. I should add that it took me 4 years to become actually what I would call ‘fluent’ as in able to understand tv shows and have a conversation without struggling. Even now I am still learning but the best thing I ever heard about language learning is that you are never done learning. Even in English I still hear new words every so often. You are never going to know every single word in any language and that’s ok. Apparently you never learn a language you just get used to it and I think it’s so important to not expect perfection. Just have fun.

So I grew up with Dutch and Spanish (I am native Dutch and my dad is Venezuelan), I do not speak Spanish fluently because I never wanted to learn. Now I am in college, my degree is fully in English with a second language in Spanish, still basic stuff that I already know, just for improvement. In my second year, I'm in my first year now, I will go study abroad, maybe to Denmark (I really want to go to Denmark). I've been listening and watching kpop/kdramas since summer 2019 and I figured that I like Korean language and their culture. Lmao and now I am stuck between three languages. I never knew it could be so hard choosing a language to study. Oh and to make it even better I had German for 4 years in the Netherlands and in my last 3 years,I really loved German. I was even planning to study in Germany in the future, but then I graduated (10th grade) and never had German after that, I would love to pick it up again. omg 4 languages and counting *I can't with myself*.

I'm so happy you enjoy learning languages I'm personally learning German in order to study my PhD there,I'm in level B1 almost after 2 months,I've also started Italian because my sister is studing in Italy in case I go and see her, If you like to learn middle eastern languages I could teach you Persian(farsi)فارسی.in case one day you'd visit Iran, I'd love to teach my friends sth, so don't worry I teach you step by step from the very beginning and to the advanced levels🙂💛 .

Hello, Shea! That was the sip of motivation I needed! Thank you! I've been studying French and Italian for a while, seen your videos about your Italian approach (and picked up a few ideas). Need your advice about the Spanish. What book would you recommend for total beginners? Like you said "solid" book for sorting everything out in the head

Grazie, è stato molto utile! Specialmente vedere le tue emozioni e rispecchiarmici, perché effettivamente iniziare a studiare una nuova lingua può essere difficile e frustrante. Io inizierò a imparare lo Slovacco per un viaggio che farò 🌸 Ps Ti scrivo in italiano perché so che lo stai studiando ed è la mia lingua madre, spero ti faccia piacere 💓 Thanks, it was helpful! Especially seeing your emotions and mirroring them, because of course starting to study a new language can be difficult and frustrating. I will start learning Slovak for a trip I will do. Hello Shea! Do you speak Spanish! If I were you I would study Spanish after Italian, because they are so similar. In addition Spanish is one of the most spoken languages, more than French. The cool thing of French on the other side is that they have more than 90% of vocabulary that are quite similar with Italian. PS: I started to learn Spanish and English because my native languages are Italian and German.

Don't worry about pronunciation or verb tenses (you only need the present tense in the third person) when you are a beginner, all you need to do is to identify and talk about simple objects, people and their occupations, this will give you control of the conversation. All languages can be learned in the exact same way. It's easier than you think.
