The Best Mindset for Learning A Language | How to Stay Motivated When Studying a Language 📚

Mindset is key when studying a new language. By developing a growth mindset, you can train yourself to thrive on new challenges, and therefore you will advance in your studies faster. Learning a new language will always be tough, especially when you get started, but you have to set yourself up for success from the beginning. In this video, I'll go over the differences between a fixed mindset vs a growth mindset and how learning a language can help you change a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. Hi Shea! I‘m 18 years old and part Norwegian, part German, so I already speak those two languages plus english (from school). My father has also been teaching me french for my whole life. I really wanted to start a new language but without a real life teacher I’ve found myself unmotivated to sit down by myself and start. You changed that! I’ve decided to start learning italien now! I tried learning Norwegian a while ago and I got pretty far! It’s been a few years, so I don’t remember too much of it, but if I ever successfully learn Latin I’m going to try to pick up Norwegian again

Hey, your video was a little thing for me, it gave me that we are going through the mistakes. Started to learn Chinese on my own recently, recent as in two weeks ago but, I need to do more. During quarantine I feel that I can do a whole lot more but, motivation is what lacks sadly. Good question! I used to, and it's natural to when you're starting out. But once you start associating words with their meeting, you find that you start doing that word for word translation. Watching TV shows and films in Italian really helped me with this. Once I started hearing phrases and common verbs over and over again, I started to realize that I wasn't translating to English all the time anymore. I think it's something that happens without you even realizing it! But don't worry if in the beginning you feel like you are translating everything in your head, it's natural :)

Hey Shea, Right now I'm studying and trying to make senses of Spanish, but I feel like I've hit a wall. I can recognize words and structures when listening, but I find it hard to make "Sence" of the words right away or it takes a few replays. For example if I hear "Que no soy el mismo", I find it super hard to find the meaning in my head that it's " that I'm not the same" I don't know if what I'm talking about makes sense. Have you ever experienced this problem before? If so, then how did you get through it to " find the meaning in words" when listening? Thanks in advance and love the video!

Yes definitely! In Italian there are plenty of sentences that don’t make sense when you try to translate them literally. But usually these you just have to memorize with time. Certain constructions will just be learned by repetition and by hearing them again and again by watching videos and tv shows. It’s ok, it’s normal! It takes time

Thanks for the reply! It's quite insane really to think how much one's world view is based on this difference in mindset. I have a friend that is a firm believer in destiny and purpose, that all is predetermined. Technically the world might just be one infinitely complex simulation, with no actual free will. Yeah and.. if you would like to discover more about how do we think and how we can control our feelings in favour of our rational thinking I suggest you a book called Emotional intelligence - Daniel Goleman. This book perfectly shows how to maintain mentality in doing something. And shows lots of example situations about emotions taking over us and persuading us to do what they want without and rational traits. I mean this book is basically a brain in a cube of paper :D Yep you really should read it. It is simple in explaining psychology of the brain for people that do not specialize in it. So that is why I like it. But you may not be interested in it. For that case look at this quick summary about it. So you will better know if you would like it. Sure! So I lived in Rome for a few months a few years ago and really loved it. I want to live in Italy again probably next year and so I wanted to learn the language to get the most out of it! Plus I just have always wanted to challenge myself to learn a language and I feel a very strong passion for Italian :)
