That's so true! I learned English in this way and I have been using the same methods for learning German. I didn't attend a course coz they don't actually teach you how to speak, but just grammar rules.

I try to incorporate new vocabulary in my everyday writing.. I look up unknown word, read its definition, then translate it into a simpler definition and compare it with similar word, then look up example sentences if I am not confident with my understanding of the word, then I try to use the word, then I learn from my error 😀
